Nothing like that in Wanaka being further west. Only around 1cm accumulation - but icy roads. All schools in district closed for the day.

Treble Cone was reporting around 20cm, -13C and strong winds. They optimistically eventually decided to open when they spotted the sun briefly. Good luck to anyone heading up there today.

    FORECAST

Snow showers are forecast to continue. In the 24 hours from 9am Monday to 9am Tuesday expect a further 15 to 25cm to accumulate above 200m and 5 to 10cm to near sea level. However, about the eastern hills of Otago 20 to 30cm may accumulate. Later on Tuesday the snow should ease.
    AREA/S AFFECTED

    Canterbury
    FORECAST

The Kawarau Gorge SH6 Cromwell to Queenstown has closed. Also the radio is reporting flurries on the Bombay Hills in Auckland.

Despite about 2-3 cm over night and starting to puke down about 9 am, it's now clear and thawing on the roads here in Fairlie. Was waiting for Lindis to clear, but now road from here to Tekapo showing closed and as mentioned Kawarau Gorge. Booked another night at accommodation - looks like I'm going nowhere.

Well it wasn't much of a dump in town, but a colleague has lived here for 52 years and hasn't seen snow in New Plymouth. Cleared up about 10 am has been a reasonably still sunny day, so I nipped off up the road...

I have just observed (experienced) fairly good skiing around central Arrowtown on moderately dry snow. Snowing lightly but was quite heavy at times ~ 11am NZ time. Have had some clearer conditions recently - a little blue sky now visible and previously green hills above town are now very white. A real shame! (;-)

Interestingly, just had a friend come over the Crown Range from Cardrona Village and made it to Queenstown fine (it did take a long time though).

Less snow over the other side of the Crown Range.

In most of the South Island I reckon you'd have to be 5. Although things will be interesting in Canterbury following tonight.

A decent accumulation of snow here in Dunedin, but it's the second time this year, let alone my life..!

or whether you stayed in the one place all your life, bit more likely in the provinces?
I once knew a man from the Lower Clarence (NSW) who never got further away than Grafton, died so in his 80's.

just back down from coronet - amazing
Snow was in a1 condition and it fell all day - coro express and meadows open - rocky gully got shut just at lunch - snow was great - windblown ankle / shin deep in limited places but a super fresh soft and considering were the southern hemi quite light cover everywhere. Harldy any lines and plenty of "happy" people liking to sit inside and whinge about the conditions which made my day all the better!!!!!!!!!! - besides the vis was an amazing day.
lines off the side of the hurdle and off million dollar provided the best pow i could find - and vis off exchange was way to gnarly
Best snow i have skiied in NZ.

Didn't know about Sh6, went over the Crown Range today around 12pm and again around 3pm, lots of snow on the road chained up the Pajero I was in and got through without an issue. One thing I did notice is the Kiwi's are like the aussies and start shutting stuff down / chaining up with the slightest fall of snow.

As this is an obs thread, noticed about 30cm at Arrowtown about 1pm today. 2-5cm in Wanaka about 10:30am all gone about 3:30pm. Queenstown got smashed when I was down there as well, prob 10-15cm accumulation.

Snow has come back in around Queenstown about 5pm with the temp on -1.4C. If it keeps up like this, all my tracks and footprints will be covered up in the morning.

The little bit of snow that fell in Wanaka last night had mostly disappeared by early afternoon, which is fine by me. Importantly though more is falling in the mountains.

I saw on the road snowfall warnings that the Rimutaka road was in for about 50cm of snow until midnight Tuesday.

Can't ever remember when it has received more than 10cm.

What amazes me is that with all those road closures, the one road you'd think would be closed; Crown Range, has been open all day.

All the more impressive Donza when you consider that the little spotty shower activity in the south of that map is delivering quite heavy snow showers to Queenstown

Mayhem on the roads on the 6 oclock news, mostly would be curable by snow tyres, as would those road closures and add some decent snow ploughs?Still this is a poor small country and the planet is warming.
Pretty amazing system all the same.

same thing happened three weeks ago
We went past cars and SUVs crossing over on the downhill from Lake Hayes going to TC in a snowstorm, got over to Wanaka and it was dry and clear
In fact a lot of cars were getting into trouble on the Crown descent above Arrowtown, because it would have been near impossible to believe the difference in conditions between the Wanaka and Wakatipu Valleys.
Whenever a newbie breathlessly posts"It's snowing in Wanaka" I'm always suspicious.I've seen it happen, but I haven't seen it last much more than a few hours on the ground

Queenstown council went on a big money saving exercise this year. One of the major items to be cut back was snow clearing services. The one year they really could have done with the extra facilities.

Wanaka has a very different microclimate to Queenstown. That said, it's had its share of solid snowfalls.
