Stay on topic.
from a couple of days ago
c'mon for a good call Pixie!
chch is open still. Just not 100% on traffic. Pretty sure Invercargill is too.
please Donza, I have more than a passing acquaintance with Turoa and Niseko, you are snorting something very pure?
I would pass Turoa on by if it wasn't out of the way already and full of those dangerous snowboarders and has a problem after all these years with reporting verity?
Still snowing in Arrowtown..... Light snow, but apart from a couple of 1 hour breaks, it has been pretty much full on.
What was the drive up to Coronet like today?
And just for a change, it's snowing again in Queenstown this morning. There's probably another 5-10cm of new snow overnight in my yard.
Mountains are reporting around 60cm of new snow and there will be some HUGE drfits!
Warmed up substantially in Dunedin (rather than a forecast freeze and more snow overnight), with rain, sleet, hail and the odd flake this morning. I suspect that things are still very much white above 300 m or so. We still have a reasonable amount of snow outside, though it would have been nice to wake up to another 10-15 cm, which was how it was looking last night.
GFS has the potential for plenty more snow around here before the end of the day, but the temps have crept slightly too high I think.
ChCh has done well. Would be great to be in Queenstown today...
It's a bit of a two edged sword. Schools closed, shops running low on the basics is the downside.
Upside of course is the snow and with overnight temps of around -6C for the next week, I think this snow will hang around until September.
Yea, should help ensure a good spring in the backcountry too. Dewar will be looking good again?
Hey Tele..was that your "Shot of the Day"on Snow.co.nz?
I reckon yes, his pics are always there.
Think I've only ever had one up there.
its got his name above the pics
Yep. Usually submit a few pics a month if I have something interesting.
You can see who is copping in
Turoa is sunny with 60-80cm of fresh and neg 10
Dobson finally getting some love
Will be interesting to see dobsons cam when it clears a bit. I'm kind of expecting all the rocky patches to still be there. strong south west through south-east winds can't be too good for them. Even Ohau in it's pretty protected gully hasn't had too much snow stick around on anything close to exposed looking at the cams. Probably be pretty nice in the dobsons half pipe or lee of micro-terrain features.
MODIS 22:05Z this am. Subsequent image is less interesting; too much cloud.
The LWT looked like Ardenne Forest 1944..amazing finger bulge all the way to Antwerp
Don't think even Bastogne stood a chance in this one
Ridiculous polar numbers all over the place
who is wearing whos uniform..?
nice analogy BTW
meanwhile the LWT continues its blitzkrieg on the lowlands of Poland (south island)
Sounds like it's just raining most places now. Thickness has shot up. Don't think we'll see much more exciting below 300 m for the South Island.
Some certain bc spots are going to be loaded though, perfect weekend ahead too..!
Was relatively warm in Queenstown this afternoon (~5C) with lots of sun. Was great for melting the snow on the driveways and roads.
The airport got some flights happening this afternoon, so Wednesday should be all systems go.
Mt. Hutt got some love in last 24 hrs:
New Snow 50cm on Wed 17 August
Mt Hutt is unfortunately CLOSED for today. We have received approx 80cm of wind affected snow in this storm cycle. Very large winds drifts on the road and the mountain. We have not yet got access on the road and once we do there will be alot of preparation required to get open. There will be some great skiing and riding once we do get open. """""""
Similar Mt. Dobson and Roundhill. Presuming the clubbies received heaps...
Stuck in Springfield for 3 days now... about 30cm of snow settled, spent the arvo hitting a kicker in a field out back of the hotel, looks to be clearing next few days and reports say plenty of snow up high but distributed by wind... just saw a vid of someone who drove up to Olympus sun nite and hunkered in.... 100cm of blower- the caption was 'got in my car sunday night and drove to ....Japan?" looked epic....our flight yesterday got bumped to Sunday, but not complaining AT ALL
Surely you just have to call...
Very good s-p.
Just a quick update from Qtown - as far as I can tell we haven't run out of milk, bread and petrol - I bought the first 2 at the supermarket this afternoon and though I can't really vouch for the petrol situation since I haven't used my car after I parked it in a side street on Sunday which hasn't been plowed or gritted yet I don't think the tanks have run dry.
I talked to Mr Plow at the base of Porters Pass this morning and he certainly didn't make me laugh like the days of old. He turned me around with a story or two. Apparently even the graders with 2 sets of chains on couldn't make their way through the uphill, they had to call in the machines from the arthurs pass side. Still plenty of precipitation around the christchurch area today, so I expect plenty more resorts will struggle with clearing the snow. Crossing fingers for tomorrow.
Gday gibbsy, just spoke to you off the couch at the springfield pub!
BR report this morning.
Weather: Wind and Snow
Weather Comments: Strong to gale easterly winds, poor visibility, and snow expected throughout the day.
Current Temperature: -5 degrees
Last Snowfall: August 17th 2011, 65 cm
Snow Conditions: 65cm (skiing more like 30cm-100cm) of new wind blown snow with more expected today. Exceptional coverage across all of our terrain.
Minimum Depth: 130 cm
Maximum Depth: 250 cm
Road Condition: Closed
Road Comments: Road is not cleared today, do not attempt to drive up our access road. SH 73 closed.
I am in Chch and not too confident about getting up tomorrow morning on my day off. Bugger.
65cm of fresh is going to be hard work for Daniel to clear off the BR road.
And then there is the Porters Pass and all the way along highway 73 between Porters and BR road. Starting to look like another day in town. Shame I have to work the weekend!!
Things seem to be returning to normal around Arrowtown: main roads seem well plowed - CP Rd fairly easy for SUVs.
Excellent skiing at CP - nice packed powder with some untracked here & there. Light wind & considerable sun made it a fabulous day.
Actually one of the nice things about Wanaka town is that the snow all disappeared a few hours after it fell, so getting around town there is no evidence of it at all (well apart from people that were elsewhere stuck trying to et back). No road clearing required.
In the mountains though - different story.
Porters Pass and SH73 still closed.... br, craigieburn and porters still dont have their access roads open so almost stuck still, failing a long, ambitious drive... We need Mr Plow...
Just starting to rain in Queenstown now. Interestingly metservice has dropped the snow level to 1200 metres tonight and tomorrow so Coronet might do ok over the next couple of days.
post of the year... how did I miss that
Well we've got the moisture - it's bucketing down rain in Queenstown now. Let's hope the freezing level is low enough to deliver good snow to the skifields.
Below zero at Remarks and heading that way at CP (will be snowing up high)
Lovely spring day in Queenstown today, shorts and t-shirt weather. Daylight saving starts tomorrow night in NZ and the forecast for Queenstown is...snow!
Warm and beginning to blow NW in Wanaka today. Slushie at Cardies by lunch. Looking forward to some serious low level snow this weekend.
Snowing now in Queenstown.
That's Spring for you. I was in the garden today in shorts and t-shirt and currently snowing at my place with the temperature still dropping.
Don't think there'll be much in it, but at least it's a nice late season top up.
Hoping to hopefully get a late ski in but not too bothered if I don't. Flying over on Tuesday. Hoping for nice weather.
Coronet was brilliant today, near deserted, 10cms fresh and a beaut blue sky spring day. My idea of the perfect day off.
