Just starting this to keep an eye on the weather over the ditch for the next wee bit.

@Red_switch was alluding to the warm SST off NZ at the moment and how it was affecting the weather.

Well this is something i've not seen before. In june.

Onshore thunderstorms rolling towards the west coast of the south island. From the NW.

Both EC and GFS ensembles pointing towards 50cm+ of snow in Queenstown. Don’t know if that’s just because the resolution of the modelling is generating forecasts based on the higher surrounding elevations though.



Although forecast 850 temps also look well low enough for an extended period of freezing levels <300m, so maybe not.




The forecast surface temps certainly don’t look anything like any forecast I’ve seen for a city in our corner of the planet!

Metservice has now issued a road snowfall warning for the Milford Road 10pm Thursday to 10 pm Friday, 40 to 50cms may accumulate above 600m asl.

Excellent storm, not sure when we last had a system quite like this. 10 cm of accumulation in 30 minutes this morning at an AWS I maintain in the Pisa Range, quite remarkable for that site.

Yeah. It is winter I guess, rains a lot in Auckland in winter. And we did have a beaut summer.

On average it rains even more than Invercargill, and much more than Dunedin. But yes, up there winter is the wet season, down here it's the dry season (all relative though, innit)

Different rain to Dunedin though, which is often the dreary, endless, drizzly sort. Auckland gets a lot though, about 1150 mm a year, nearly twice as much as London, UK. And June and July are typically the wettest.

They still do when the Idaburn gets decent ice, which needs a couple of weeks of sub zero temps and hoar and no snow falling which mucks up the ice surface and quality.
