Wind starting to really get up here in Melbourne.
Looks a bit warmer than expected in the hills though. Buller at 1.2

Rained on and off at Buller most of the night. There was a little bit of snow first but I got up at 1.30 and by that stage it had turned. Looks like SW is moving across Beaufort / Ballarat now.

Arrived in PV carpark @ 6.20am

2c on 4wd display as we drove in.

    Feels colder than it is.

Very very gusty and looks to be blowing from the West.

Lift wind hold for sure today IMO.

    Visibility surprisingly ok.

Perisher weather station on top of the quad showing 152km/hr wind and wind chill of -31:eek:

Sounds like a good day to wax skis and catch up on housework.

Also posted in the Perisher forum...

Morning on-the-ground report: it is very VERY windy; standing outside the lodge (in Smiggins) just now you can barely brace against it. The lodge manager and I both think right now it is about as windy as we have seen/felt it here. Supposed to ease off a bit later in the day but right now if you have an alternative to coming up the hill I would recommend that alternative.

Also it is r**ning - or whatever the correct word for "r**n that is blowing sideways at over 100km/h, mixed with flying bark and small tree branches" is.

    Yep Agreed

Gale wind and very wet. Not surprised with what you say about wind chill.

SUVs are rocking around in the carpark.

PV staff member just got blown over with his shovel as I write this.

Can't see them setting up V8.

My eldest has headed up to BC for wintersports.

My youngest is telling me if I make him ski today he wants out of the family.

At the Bull I observe yesterday to be the pick of the year so far and today to be the most miserable...
Rain at around 2mm per half hour and already we are 2.5c above the BOM forecast max (wow that's a pretty big miss on the temps). At these temps, don't see it turning any time soon.... Bus tourists shall be soggy.

(Smiggins) r**n has increased in intensity and the wind gusts are just as insane as they have been for the last few hours. Steady traffic uphill to Perisher car park but unaccountably not too many taking a look and driving straight back down - astonishing!

I observe Donza makes very good coffee. Meanwhile, temps have dropped in Jindy and it's now bloody cold. First returnees have motored back in - swearing they'll be heading back after lunch when winds drop below 100k. Roll on mutant season of 2015.

Next year I'll put a weather station on the caravan. It's very very windy in Guthega valley. Raining and around 6 degrees at I think 1300m. Didn't sleep much past 3am due to shaking and freight train wind gusts. Not going anywhere.

Rain turning to sago now at PV. Blowing hard and V8 closed.
Looks like the cold air is Western Vic with SW change. Hopefully turns to snow and winds die in a couple of hours.

Looking out the lodge window (at Smiggins). Conditions are actually a lot worse than the photo makes it look.

Lodge manager just came back from a drive up to Perisher. Car park is nearly full(!) and the wind gauge at one of the other lodges in Smiggins was just reading 129km/h.

    Looked borderline to me.
That said the stuff over Adelaide and nw Vic looks more promising. Cooler air. Rain turning into 5-10cm freshen up hopefully.

Observing that perisher car park is like a river in places, heavy drizzle and rain, and....wind. Coffee and shops are doing a roaring trade. Back to Jindy for disc golf.
