I looked back through the BOM forecasts (just for the record) and they changed their view of yesterday and today from rain to snow on their PM forecast on Wednesday (and also upped the moisture content). So while they aren't always right, the BOM gets a solid A+ for this one

Sunday into monday was looking yuk, from a long way out. Tuesday forecast only came good with the modelling of the ECL and the southerly upper feed, which first appeared Wed. as @Bloke picked up. I was still not convinced of where the snow line would be , have been pleasantly surprised, a lot lower than I was figuring,

I based my skiing instead of working gamble on the radar vibe, which I think the bom liked the look of too. The cold air pushing up had a good chance of either pushing the bulk of the moisture North, or interacting with it.

You look at the swirly things on the radar loop, free your mind, and tap into the vibe of those patterns.

Snowed lightly on and off at Buller from mid morning. Nothing significant but just saw something on Insta from Koroora that it is snowing steadily as noted by someone earlier.

Back in melb for a couple of days of meetings then back up Friday early.

Alpine the dark side of snowboarding
Australia's alpine region is considered to lay between 2228m and 1850m altitude. Australia’s alpine regions cover only 0.15% of the continent, with an altitudinal range of just 400m (Costin 1957; Pickering and Armstrong 2003; Williams et al. 2008).

The natural snowline is around 1850m often quite obvious on the drive into Perisher Valley, this is extended lower at Thredbo by snowmaking.

    O/T I know for OBs but :

Really? I was quite sure Perisher Valley was above the snowline at 1720m hence why its generally covered in snow most of the season and not just reliant on snowmaking. I was sure the natural snowline was around 1600m in NSW anyway. i.e. below bottom of Perisher and around bottom Merritts at Thredbo.

No r**n that I noticed in Smiggins, some wet fog most of the night though. Railings around our lodge that had snow on them last night still do now. Road is wet with a bit of slush on it, leftover from yesterday. Snow will be wet and r**n-affected but again because of how it fell and the persistent fog, not from any r**n overnight.

Have a bit over a foot of snow on and around my car from this system. I'm going to dig it out this afternoon even though there is more snow forecast this week, because it has such a lot of moisture in it and it will freeze _hard_ when we eventually get a freeze this week and getting a car out of a foot of that stuff is a rotten way to spend a couple of hours.

Going off topic here: but alpine area really means treeless or area above treeline - that doesn't equate to the average snowline. In Southern Vic the reliable snowline is generally around 1400m but hovers from 1200m after cold outbreaks to about 1500m after a warm/ dry spell. Hence skiing at our small local hills is a week by week proposition. (;-)

Hate to disappoint but there won't be any Spoons on Demo. Bit like taking a Howitzer to a knife fight on home turf.

    Demo fleet consists of Cassiar 80, 85 & 95, Wailer 99, 105 & 112, Yvette 112. Mix of Pure, Hybrid & Hybrid T2.

Problem was the low started spinning back on itself , drawing moisture from the Noreast into a SE stream..
whereas yesterday and monday was a cold SE stream into North moisture.

Next week should be good. Plenty of cold nites coming. and hopefully some cold winds; with plenty of sunshine. A much better combo for spring riding than the backwash of an ECL with warm drizzle. But the freshly minted 40 cents now on the ground has very much repaired things and saved the season in NSW - at least - from an otherwise early collapse. I'll get a pix tmw from back of Eyre. It was crusted deep slop on Mt P, so did a lazy whole resort tour instead (sans Smigs). But others seemed to like the challenge of skiing vertical porridge and were smashing down the hills all over Perisher today.
