Some very light snow today at Perisher and Smiggins. Some nice clouds that look like they might deliver, but nothing yet. I observe crossing my fingers.

Trying to observe if there's anything falling at Hotham via Fletch's cam. Seems a little stuck! Any reports?

    Well this could turn out nicely IMO... I observe the following;

Awesome positon of moisture feed off the Tasman, especially for Vic.

Colder than expected associated temps, hence good chance of greater accumulations.

Second low arriving with associated trough and moisture

Fetch getting deeper south hopefully aiding futher cooling of the moisture associated with the low in theTasman

Temps all negative with moisture spread ramping up judging by the sat loop

Jane likes it, CC kinda likes it [IMG]

Bom going for solid moisture for perhaps 24 hrs starting this evening, then the ridge of high bumping in quickly, hence moisture moving on as freezing levels ascend

And finally, steady light rain here in Essendon, dark clouds everywhere and cool to cold.

I am feeling good for 15-30cm across the board, I think the trend with this system is all positive and will surprise us by the time it's done.

Really heavy intermitent rain in Essendon right now, only 10.8, zero wind. Radar loop has moisture rotating in an ideal direction to turn and sweep up the ranges in a N-NE direction. Loooking good IMO

Very interesting radar image in Melbourne at the moment.
Radar is tracking rainfall that is coming from the SE. But over the city it changes direction and heads NNE.
It almost looks SE of the ranges the winds are blowing from the SE, but north of them they are almost coming from the south, south west.

Looks very interesting IMO. If this swings NNE enough Falls, Hotham are set for big falls in 2-3 hours.

Cold temps, if it gets rain, it's gonna snow. 10+ Cm's IMO.

    Post Analysis

The Crackenback Ridge (2000 to 1700) had about 15 to 20 on most aspects, with up to 30cm in special places with the best terrain. Snow was from NW but light winds. I suspect more fell out on the main range. This fell on Sunday night early Monday Night

Up to -8c at eagle-nest last night.

But the base is not very compressed and or solid at the moment. You can hear it collapse in isolated areas above 2000m, suggesting the early July dump has not fully settled yet.

Or is a bit rotten with last week's damp powder. That was my experience at Perisher the weekend before last when I headed out in Sumday's dampness.

The early July stuff is rock solid. As part of the AST1 course that the Avalanche School held on the weekend, we dug a pit. It was clear that last weeks warm weather followed by the rain gave us a 15cm layer of rotten wet stuff. It was totally solid below that. Hard to imagine that the layers would radically different on other elevations. The pit was on a leeward slope 150 meters vertical above the skitube terminal.

    Yeah.

I think that is right, it was just the compression of the top layer about 0.5m thick were I was.

I was walking over areas that would have been wind scoured in early July by strong westerlies.

These areas have only accumulated in the dumps since about 25th July or there abouts.

But there is a weak layer there, if we get lots of snow on top of that.

Honestly, I think everything is adjusting to last weeks rain and heat.

Should all freeze up this week.

Need a new snow profile after the next snow dump sometime next week I recon.

My basic avie understanding says that once all that melted snow refreezes the cover should be bomb proof.

Actually your observations sort of suggest that there was more than 30cm of snow on Sunday night.

I did not really have that much clue about how much damage was done to the base last week and weekend. It obviously froze at about 1900m

Nice. There looks like a bit dump-age on the satellite as we speak.

So by Friday we are going to have 50cm on top of that crusty layer and maybe more.

Hence, south east to south west slopes. But I am not qualified to make comments here.

    Nice website.

Yeah as far as bases go I suppose.

As avalanches in the back country goes, yeah there is a potential avalanche hazard if that layer went to ice and fresh snow on top about 50cm by the weekend on the main range.

I am not concerned about it but a little bit mindful.

I gotta go to bed but now. Cheers it should be on Friday.

Nice to see white on the Buller village cam again. Shame it doesn't sit deeper in the range cause it has some of the best terrain and interesting little runs (fast one/wood run/federation). I observe sympathy from me to them. Sitting on 35cm whilst the rest are up and over a metre.........it aint right.
