No snowmaking at PV - It's well below zero. Is it simply because making any more snow now ahead of the rain is a waste of time - or are the conditions not yet suitable?

They were moving a couple of the new fan guns into place at 4:30pm today. It felt bloody cold after 3pm. The word on the hill was that r*** was expected, to be followed by some very useful snow falls. RB, CC and HG, I think you have got the situation picked.

I observe most of the moisture is concentrated south in Vic and north of Canberra/Goulburn, there's a noticeable gap in the front above the NSW alps.

edit: Actually this is probably the radar shadow over the mountains isn't it?

Yeah looks like there is a dusting at Thredbo.
Has been raining here in Geelong all night and all morning, pretty steady with the occasional heavy burst, still feels relatively mild outside though.

Baw Baw getting cooler. Bouncing between 0.6 & 1.
If it gets a touch cooler, they could do ok.

    Re: Observations: 12-17th June System

I dont know what method the BOM meteorologists use to predict a snow level but they have it wrong today. Warm air is wrapping around the low and is keeping the colder air to the southwest. Models predict 850hPa temps at 2-4C all day. 850hPa level is around 1400m so using a wet lapse rate of around 200m per 1C that would give a freezing level of 1800 - 2200m. This matches the Alpine temps recorded so far this morning. At times snow can fall well below the free air freezing level due to mixing, latent heat or cooling from lifting but thats not on the cards today.
