+1 to Pan.
Interesting to see how quickly the temps drop this evening....
Mt Ginini (ACT) has been below zero all day (currently on -1.4C) and received 11mm. Brindabellas should look nice when it clears.
Thredbo seems to have settled at neg 1 at top station
Any word from Selwyn? Am thinking they might have done nicely this arvo.
For those who like to watch (observe):
Mountain moisture coming in:
Anyone been at or heard from perisher this afternoon, Temp has leveled off ao 0.3 for the monent and precip at around 2mm/h.
One would hope its at least wet snowing at bottom of the mountain.
Blizzard like at perisher.
The upper cold pool of air that was over the resorts last night is now heading north as predicted and that is why Mt Gininni has been colder than Perisher or Thredbo today. It will move tonight to the north of the State. I would expect cooling to barely sub zero overnight and tomorrow below 1800m might well see a lot the gains washed away. Sorry.
I'd normally agree, but in this instance the depth against the fence will give a pessimistic indication. The fence catches snow being driven by winds with a westerly component (the usual conditions for snow in Oz) and causes it to bank up. With an easterly moisture feed and little wind, the snow just settles where it falls rather than banking up against the inside of the fence.
So the snow depth elsewhere will be better than the fence suggests.
I'm with DWD here, Smiggs cam FTW.
I disagree that any gains would be washed away..snowlevel will rise...thats a given...however considering it is still snowing to 1300 I think we are good shape.
I would love to say you are wrong, but i have to agree with you, that plus the easterly warm feed.. I dont think temps are going to drop
I hope so Donza, I'm pretty confident about tonight just worried about tomorrow.
What warm easterly feed?
to be honest...once the system warms up...it will be further off the coast. Rainfall will be lower. I have mates on the Jill...so have been getting good updates. Wet heavy windy snow was last message. At 6pm.
I'm no expert but I observe this doesn't look to good ??
Hope I'm missing something here.
thickness of 5400/5440...
Perisher temps appear to be trending down @ 7 pm. Still looking good & BOM gives cause for further optimism from this system.
and what does that actually mean.
Meanwhile temps look like they may have peaked at PV and are now heading downwards.
Is this storm sort of like the opposite to the June 1 wash out. Both somewhat unexpected - but in the end canceling out each other to put us back to and hopefully ahead of where we were on May 30.
You can see the embedded secondary trough starting to affect the flow...its generating heavy rain over the Illawarra...its also pulling the moisture north...precipitation levels over the alps will be lower.
uppers are pretty chilly too
Temps at PB have been steady since midday.
Observations from the base of v8. Complete whiteout ..still snowing. Very windy.
FV back in the negaives again.
PB bottom of V8 below zero now. -0.1 deg.
OK thanks Donza I have been looking only at the 5400 blue line as freeze. Happy to listen (read) and learn...
I observe you just lost me again with the imbedded secondary trough... all good we enjoy your work. Cheers.
So what is PB reporting?
It seems about 46mm of ppn since temps went neg yesterday?
Is that translating to 45cm on the ground?
Anything over 40 cents is woo-hooable
I roughly equate 5400 with a snow level of 1400m...5440...1700m..5360 1100m. 5320 800m. Etc...re the other lows...check the sat pic..you can see a secondary low offshore from Sydney. It's changing the shape....for lack of a better expression its tightening up the low...
Looks to be smashing down. I'm calling 35-40cm down to date. imo.
^^^^ according to the BOM weather station there has been no precipitation for the last hour, weird.
Nothing on radar either ?? Could be the fog making it look like snow. But looks like snow in front of lights.
Canberra getting hit hard.
according my source..more wind and fog..some snow
Heavy wet snow 1mm = 10mm doesn't work. Anyone's guess what it will be though. Good for base though, need cold to follow
Disagree. -0.3. Still falling.

screwing up tight D-San..moisture heading Norwest
Tail may drag across the Alps though
What about the moisture being sucked up from the South?
Any chance it might make the Alps?
I've heard its closer to 50 near mid. Station
Wow 1 deg drop at Thredbo top in the last 15mins or so
Can't see it forumiesters...... The coldest temps are actually at Hotham and the moisture is a no show. Think I'll stick with Frogs call. Too warm for the 25 / 40 cm punters but it's nice too keep the dream alive. 5 to 10 tops. Hope I'm wrong.
yes...hammering here in gong...dog on lounge...drove home at 60 on f6 tonight...strong onshore flow
? Perisher has had 40 cents plus.
Gong getting hit hard. Keep dog in.
Stars out at Randwick.
Yeah Fletch, Frog was very far off the mark with this one - Donzo props, you've been pretty bang on this one.
I observe temps starting to drop at Thredders & PB, ~1650m freeze level atm.
you mean at perisher...word was around a foot at base of v8...around 40.45 cents at mid...no idea any higher at perisher itself. Imagine mount p collected.
whats interesting is the lapse rate is very shallow...so freeze level of 1650....snow can fall to 1400...like this morning.
From what I saw today the Captains Flat radar has not shown mositure over the mountains at any time today.
The radar is line of sight. Mountains create radar shadow.
Been crapping me off all day, keep looking at Canberra / Yarrawonga / etc pretty much the same shadow
But that doesn't always happen - as you clearly see the fronts going over some of the time -right?
I use sat pic radar overlay...
