A long date range on this one, but the weather pattern over this period will be very interesting to watch how it unfolds and will run for this period of time.

I currently observe the spinning beauty directly under Perth and making her way towards us

I observe an increasing temp with no change in dew point [IMG]

I also observe a pressure of 983 hPa here at my house... which is 190 metres above sea level [IMG] = MSLP of 1004 hPa.

Temp rising at Buller from 0 to 1 and a bit of drizzle rubbish at the moment, only 2mm so not much to worry about.

HotHam 2cms of snow tonight observed temps -1.2 and steady.

I'm in Perth and experiencing the second day of that "spinning beauty". It certainly has pushed some strong wind and rain at times, and could be a bit of a wildcard for the Vic/NSW snow fields in the coming week.

I think the next 2 weeks are going to be really interesting, and if the persistent high pressure systems on the east weaken (as they are expected to), then all should be good for cold weather.

Let us not forget this time last year there was not even snow on the ground, then one large system on the 1st July pretty much set the season running.

The moment I stepped out my front door this morning and feld how mild it was I knew what it would be doing up there.

This is classic Buller behaviour, rain pushing us to the brink before bringing the snow.

We hope so. Don't you think that these ongoing mild temps are a worry. BOM still forecasting mild/mild/mild all week to Sunday. Is there a big rain-small snow event coming? I hope not but those are the forecasts.

PS. This morning I thought there was a blizzard in Hawthorn, turned out to be a Magpie crapping on my windscreen. [IMG]

Hope it's like the late July turnaround in 2003. Think it might have been just before SIC.

It was pouring, and if it kept going we probably would have shut, then it dumped about a metre and we had amazing conditions for the rest of the season including powder a few times in October.

i love that pic, its got 80cm-1m of snow written all over it, looks like a fairly strong moisture feed from the NW and lots of cold air. looks like though we will get a decent amount of rain though before the front comes through

Oh if what has just come through Perth is anything to go by, I would not want to be up in the hills when this hits... very very windy, squally heavy showers and some dammage. The Swan was breaching the Kwinana Fwy on my way into work this morning! [IMG]

Lots and lots of rain too, but not overly cold?

The first front is a fizzer BTW. It is the second front which hit Perth today, which should be the most interesting one. That should hit the alpine areas Thursday night into Friday. I can see at least 40-60cm over thursday-Saturdayin Vico resorts and a little less 20-30cm at NSW resorts. Possibly more

There is some good tropical moisture feeding this system, but unfortunatly much of that will fall as rain in the lead up to the main event on Thursday night/Friday ... It will be a good one to watch [IMG]

it's very cold here - east of Canberra at 800m. Outside thermometer needs a new battery but it's 13.9 C inside the house (we've been away for 3 days). Heavy overcast. No rain yet.

Perisher at 1400, out the staffroom window -
Wind from the WSW, steady with occasional gusts to about 25kph with fog clearing and cloud lifting. This morning visibility was probably 5m due to foggy conditions which have cleared throughout the morning.
About 2c, but wind chill is bringing that down to about -2 aparrent.
Small amounts of very wet snow falling this morning mixed with light rain.

I'm glad you've grasped the basics of what causes water to freeze however I didnt say it is snowing, i only said it was occasionally snowing this morning.

Certainly looks like it has been soggy up the hills today, obs graph for the last three days from Hotham shows it has been :

    (will update)

Things are starting to look interesting on the satellite though as mentioned, some nice cold air pushing up through SW WA at the moment, and a mass of cloud in between :

Yes...there certainly is some very f&*kin cold air pushing through WA atm. Warmest it got to today was 17.9 at 6am and it cooled to around 15 degrees during the middle of the day and arvo. So windy...my car was being blown around on the way home! Oh, and its pretty damn wet still with some nice heavy showers. Send it onto victoria where they can have uber amounts of snow. Give me back my nice mild Perth weather!

not too much rain at Buller o/night. Winds are howling and it does look like it's going to get ugly soon from the radar. Off to Melb for a cpl of days. Hopefully will be white when I come home.

Perisher this morning (again out the staffroom window, damn 6am starts!)
    Time of obs. 0620
Strengthening, warm wind from the WNW, around 15kph. Visibility is good.
No freezing on the ground overnite, probably didn't get far below 0 in the village.
No Snowmaking overnight apparent, front valley has been groomed, conditions are smooth but I suspect it will turn soft fairly quickly through the day.

    Update from Perisher Valley.
    0715
Winds strengthening from the NW and aparrent temperature (windchill) is dropping now.
As light shows now, heavy clouds down to about 1980m (last four towers of Mt P Double in the cloud), visibility dropping slightly.

For clarification, these obs are from the skitube terminal and outside the Perisher center, i'm not using any of perisher's weather systems for this.

Edit: Visibility dropping significantly now, Mount P is somewhere in the mist, cloud level dropping to approx 1750m and wind strengthening further to a steady 25kph

Wet Windy and YUCK at Vic resorts, wind gusts to 110km/h at HotHam at the moment

It will rain for at least the next 20 hours in Vic resorts.

The SLIGHTLY colder stuff is just about to hit Adelaide in the next 20 mins or so, will be interesting to see the temps drop and by how much

The really cold stuff is a few hours away from Adelaide

At Victor Harbor, 80km's south of Adelaide, barometer 983 and still dropping steadily, some pretty mean squalls coming through every 5 mins or so. Temps still unusually high at 18 degrees.
