And check the one over Melbourne now that is going to smash Buller!
That yellow on the radar must be serious, coz I'm in Bendigo and its pi$$ing down right now and we'vw only got a sprinkling of light blue on there
Light rain in Melbourne's northern suburbs now..but the radar shows large orange blobs (with hints of red) heading through the bay.
Raining quite heavily in Wagga.
yep over 30mm on the buller station today and another 20 on its way in the pink bits.....all falling as snow it would appear
Is that rain in Thredbo village?
Might be snow...I'm not too good at reading night time cams.
Check the fronts on Yarrawonga 512Km composite radar
Increasing in strength on the 256 Yarrawonga
the series of pictures of the Ridge Chair at Perisher is really interesting,
filling up nicely overnight, but after 8 there seems to be either loss or just compacting
so possibly raining? but then filling up nicely again after midday
bless the orange pole
Nice to see the village cam in Thredbo. Something i know that the frog and I (and others on here) requested many years ago. Especially as a comparison to the Falls Creek cam. Great to see that the thought germinated somewhere and turned into a cam.
Now on a night like tonight those pics will be hit tens of thousands of times.
Those white streaks in the 8:40p shot are fluffy snowflakes.
I have been watching that beautiful cummulation since dinner time on my cam in dusty SE Qld.
I am on my way tomorrow. Plenty of cold weather please.
My Ob there is snow in the village.
Has been pumping down at Buller since we arrived just before 6. Roof racks have disappeared on the car. 3 cars off the road on the way up ( 1 with 3 teenage boys in a Disco over the edge at Tip Corner - ambos involved) and snowing from about 1200m
Pics fro the "virtual" Village cam are in the Buller thread - hopefully a new cam will be up with these images in the near future.
hard tom say exactly how much has fallen today as it's very windy, but in the right spots I'm guessing there'll be some deep pockets tomorrow - good stuff on the way according to the radar.
By the looks of that front coming through Melbourne, Baw Baw is about to get smashed.
That wale you can see in the foreground is mainly due to snowmaking and snowfarming. Hence last night they had the guns on down there.
Gee the loop looks chunky on the sat pic. Lots of goodness wrapping up quite high as well into NSW. I'd say selwyn will cop this quite nicely.
Considering the low hasn't really formed off the coast we're getting nuked on.
btw its a nice 11 degrees here in the gong. Light winds. No indication of whats going on only 400km south.
Oh btw any one know a nice flavour to add to a deep fried hat?. Am cooking it for our victorian friend
.8mm of rain at thredbo in last hour. Thought it should have got more out of that rain band?
Or is the radar/ rain meter doova dodgy?
useless when its snowing.. probably frozen over or full of snow.
Yeah, forget what the rain gauges are showing in a snowstorm. They're usually useless. The cams are helpful.
In the Upstate New York Tug Hill Plateau in the US, there is a webcam at a website called "northern chateau". The cam is directed at 6-foot tall ruler planted in the yard. It is lit at night as well.
Its in the lake effect snowbelt, so I have actually seen the snow reach the 5-foot mark.
Every resort here should have one webcam on a ruler in the snow. I'll bet they wouldn't do it though because then they couldn't exaggerate their base readings.
BTW, I am observing rain in St. Kilda, running as rivulets in the gutters. No wind, but chilly temps.
Do you love it?
You know you love it!
Was just about to make comment on that too snow-pixie. Haven't seen cold & moisture & wind direction like that for quite a while - it's literally perfect!
And I also observe faint, long white streaks on the Thredbo village cam....with a nice base building up on the paths and roadways
Drop Baby, Drop!!!
(3 day high) rain hitting 40mm from 9AM at Buller, all in sub zero.
Oh yeah, i'm all over it.
Sorry to be pessimistic about your NW feed, I just don't think its got jack in it. But thats cool. That low you have is sucking a direct south feed nowadays. Kinking around the SA border flowing into the riverina at present. That kink should be over the CT by mid morning.
Thats the goods for NSW. See that wrap - yummy.
That NW feed (Jet Stream) isn't going to get sucked into our system, its just gonna head straight past over the top. But i'm definitely awaiting that ice cold air
im in bonnie doon and we are getting absolutely smashed by rain.. would be puking hard right now at buller.. can't wait to get fresh tracks tomorrow morning
It's cool watching the jet stream curve that cloud band though... Even though I know it's not going to be a factor.
No worries, there is plenty of moisture around. We are getting the good dump we were hoping for. Hopefully, it's an omen of things to come. I was looking at Weatherzone's 28-day rain chart and it looks great for July!
ive looked at the live snow cam on the perisher cam, every hour or so today, and it has not stoped! they said 25cms over night, there atleast another 15cms today...with tonight susposed to be the big dump...
and the snows settling in threbo village now, snow in jindabyne possible over night?
Been raining hard in Jindy since about 7:30, just stopped but looks like another SWEET band of moisture heading up from the SW!!!
Hopefully it will
Cant wait for tomorrow morning!!
For Buller I would think about 40cm has already fallen since this morning and at least another 20cm will come with these next fronts. Could be a near 60cm "fresh" snowfall call in the reports tomorrow!
Precipitation numbers look down at Hotham and Falls, i hope its just the weather station being frozen over.
Since 9am to 10pm
Baw Baw 0mm
I hope the hotham figure is closer to the buller one, from the radar it certainly looks like its being hit by the rain bands. Guess we'll have to wait till morning to find out.
yea the NW feed in the pic above is doing jack...it's the one getting moisture from around Africa that's feeding 'our' system...see below...
Yeah i think the rain measurements in these snow storms can be a bit bogus, 0mm at baw baw doesn't seem right and wouldn't think that buller is getting 4 times as much as everywhere else. Yep reports in the morning will tell all
The rain band that just hit Buller and bumped up levels hasn't made it to Hotham yet.
See on Yarrawonga radar 256Km now
Yeah but the first band looked like it scored a diret hit at hotham and falls and the obs said the scored less than 5mm. Anyway im just happy its snowing Keep it coming 9 dtg
Falls and Hotham did best with the NW'ly and W'ly feeds yesterday, but they won't do as well with this SW feed compared to Buller. Falls is much further East so it will get hit later on tonight but there probably wont be as much moisture left by that time.
Baw Baw's rain gauge is notorious for playing dead in a snowstorm and then filling up with water in a thaw.
On a sunny, warm day in August, with no rain recorded anywhere else in Victoria, I remember the Baw Baw BOM rain gauge reading ramp up to 60mm during the course of the afternoon. funny!
Oh, its snowing at Baw Baw for sure.
It is going to be huge ppl. My next ob will be from the Lantern foyer in thredders.
Bring it on.
Current Ob Thredbo is going to be getting some more white from the SW soon.
Yarra radar is showing a big wet heading its way.
It's a quite fast-moving rain band so it only has about 8-10cm in it...you have to remember though that there will be showers to follow in the cold SW stream so we will be getting top ups.
Perfect for Buller, and hopefully they will get the guns out to blow snow on the high traffic areas which is much needed.
Plenty of orange and some purple 18hrs to 2 days
Look at charts around Hotham for 18 hrs out from now
And Thredbo all the way up to 2 days out.
It appears as if that massive band fuzzed out. Nothing but light rain here. (nothing worthy of the yellows I saw on the radar!) Eased back to showers... at least it looks as if they will continue through the night.
I highly doubt you'll see 60 cm reported for Buller in the morning. Still pumping down here though and loks like the wind is shifting a bit more westerly
Maybe 30+cm though
taken last weekend
two minutes ago- check the bottom RHS of the stairs
Yeah I think my recent call was a bit optimistic! Hard to tell when your just going off computer Obs and your not on the mountain yourself!
I just went outside to see how much new snow there is (at Hotham) and there has been about 15-20cm since 6pm. The photo below shows that there is now about 55-60cm above the heater (in the last photo I posted of it there was about 20cm, and now there is about 3 times as much. So I'm hoping that rain gauge is out cos its been snowing all night
This is a photo of a 1m high wave of snow (is there a name for that?)
Oh, and hi to the people who just asked me if I was snowobsessedgirl outside
Shiiiiiiiiiiiite hot damn.
The last 10-15cms looks nice and dry.
Sitting almost like japan snow
Awesome pics luvthabumps and snowobssessedgirl! Great having people at the resorts. Snow does indeed look quality, not wet stuff like the last couple of days!
I observe light snow on the Perisher cam. Next band is coming in, looking big. Bullers gonna get smashed from this as it's coming in from the south. Too excited to sleep
wave of snow = Snowdrift
Those pics look amazing!! The snow seems so...dry!
Oh, and I observe another band coming in very soon. Moving quite quickly though, but lets hope it's a series of many more to come tonight
Temp has dropped sharply at Buller..... This new band coming through looks nice too...
Wind speed has picked up from 14 km/hr to 40 km/hr & it's swung from NNW to due West so far.... needs to come around a bit more to a SSW feed..... Then it'll be on for young & old.
Just updating this before bed. It's -3 at Hotham, Thredbo and Perisher.
Hotham and Falls are about to get smashed with moisture, moving pretty quick however there is some red (heavy) moisture in there .
Thredbo village cam and mountainwatch live cam at Perisher are both showing accumulation, awesome. Looking forward to a white morning!
just finished work at perisher, guns were going all night, with steady -3 and below temps.
About 20cm of accumulation from 1600 til 2400, with the snow falling heavily when I left.
Snow at bullocks sometime this afternoon, and sleeting as i left the carpark, penderlea hill is pretty slippery.
