still snowing at Buller ( lightly but has been since I got up at 4.00, not sure why no change in the precip readings )

Buller reports 25 cm and I would say most of that fell later in the day and into the night.

Roads are atrocious, but the ploughs are out now. Wind is much more WSW now. Snow quality - dry

I observe a nice bits of speckled moisture heading north east to have lunch with the resorts.

At least 30 cm at Selwyn overnight, still snowing quite nicely too. Snow settled almost into Adaminaby this morning. Flakes were seen in Ada's a number of times.

I'd have to say its the altitude which wrung more snow out of it... the upper air conditions from this system must have been just right for a Thredbo/CP puke-a-thon. And it's far from over.

I'm observing showers on my roof 1.5kms east of Port Phillip Bay.

The BOM report says that almost all the rain is falling east of the bay. Tullamarine has gotten very little, for instance. Interesting. Is it the bay that is influencing the weather in this one? I'd love to know.

I've always been of the opinion myself that CP, PB and Thredbo never have particularly accurate snow depth reports. Have you ever noticed that they only ever report snow in 5cm increments?? (unless it's less than 5cm!!)

Cells usually intensify a tad when passing over the bay, and now that the system is moving furthur eastwards it wouldn't surprise me if W / NW Melb isn't getting as much.

I observe that on the current Perisher Ridge Cam that you could still get deep looking freshies even now at 10:30am! There must be no one there? or it's just opened up after being on hold/slow opening from patrol?

Charlotte Pass did not really get anymore snow than the others, the difference is due to inconsistent snow reporting.

Both Thredbo and Perisher have a habit of reporting there 24hr snowfall as the amount that fell overnight and neglect to add to it what they reported had fallen during the day before that they had reporting in previous afternoons report. The result is the 24 hour report only includes overnight snowfall and not the full amount that has fallen since the previous mornings report.

For both resorts they reported ~10cm snow during the day in the afternoon reports for both Wednesday and Thursday and then reported 20-25cm overnight the following morning. The result is the 24 hr snowfall totals both mornings should actually have read about 30-35cm instead of the 20-25cm. The 20cm or so they've ripped themselves off in the 24 hour snow reports over the last two days would then bring their storm totals up to the 65-70cm they are claiming and to a mark very similar to Charlotte. I've noticed they have a habit of doing this over the years so pay close attention now to both the afternoon and morning reports in big storms (I'm just anal about snowfall amounts and like to tally up what falls in big storms :p)

IMO you would expect similar snowfall amounts generally as they are all within about 15km of each other, at roughly the same altitude (except for Thredbo valley slopes) and nicely exposed to westerly systems like this one. Thredbo take their depths from near the top of Mt Crackenback I believe at about 1950m. Perisher I remember saying on their website a year or two ago take their amounts somewhere not far from the mid station at about 1900m and Charlottes I assume take it from the village somewhere so about 1800m (please correct if I am wrong about these locations if you know better).

Leaving the neighbours chooks in their coop to be safe from the fox I walked their dogs this morning up the back of our place and managed to get a few snaps of the Brindabellas. There isn't as much snow as in early June but there is still a lot of cloud up there that looks like it might be delivering.

Still snowing nicely at Selwyn, has been so all day so far. The snow reporter here measures snow in about 4 places around the resort (with a "stick") to try to obtain a reasonably accurate average depth. We don't believe there's anything to be gained or to make the customer happy if they feel "deceived".

Shame they have now scraped the outdoor tables of overnight snow, they help heaps with depth. Although I note they seem to have built up to about 7 or so cm again since about 9.30.

Perishers site this morning said the snow fall of 70cms was based on the past 7 days, which would include the 10cms last week.

From charlotte pass twitter: "We've recieved 40cm of new snow since yesterday afternoon!! It looks amazing outside, I'm off to check out the fresh powder...woo!"

So this would mean that the time that perisher/thredbo measure the new snow is similar to that of charlotte pass.

Charlotte pass used to measure to the cm but this year is different and their measurements are becoming less accurate. It frustrates me how all the NSW resorts (bar selwyn) use the spencers creek snow depth, which is only updated every week.

They use the snow depth at Spencers for independence. Perisher has a measuring station near mid but there is also the AWS near where the half pipe goes.

Based on Spencers creek yestreday at 71cm there had been at least a 30cm gain during the week (including a loss for the rain) as it was 45cm last week.

Different areas of the resort will have differing measurements and the direction of this storm would see a larger build in area such as Guthega (which is untracked at this point.

Overall I think 60-70cm's would be accurate for all. Some big drifts would also be out there and most of the holes now filled.
Close to 1m base in NSW so let the season begin.

I observe a bitterly cold SW wind at my place. 11 degrees, wind chill about 5!

Baw Baw has done a second snow report today [IMG] they have had 11cm since this mornings report! Now the last few days have been real evidence of how light looking showers coming from the right direction can deliver good snow up high. (NW and W showers delivered to the other resorts!)

been snowing all day at Buller. The AWS must be frozen over. Hard to say how much, but it's been steady, and at times, quite heavy. Nice and cold too. Guns are all blazing.

I observe that we skied 8 runs top to bottom thredbo today ...all untracked.

    20cms+ in most places

bit heavy after it was skied out so we went home....happy!

as to snow reports..... (you raised it Sandy)

    where do you start,
Aust. being such a windy place do you measure leeward or windward side
    sheltered or un sheltered
southerly, easterly, westerly or northerly slopes
    top, middle or bottom
depth or fallen ( eg this week with 100mm rain which reduced the snowpack by 10-15 cms then followed by 5-10cm snow that night do they report a negative snowfall!)

Ive been in Thredbo when "20 cms" have fallen and skied ice and had face shots in 1 run.

My conclusion is that there is no accurate measurement... thus all are correct.

    know your resort and guesstimate...................

    monday was very windy 30km/h+

tuesday was just crap... only high noon and friday flats was open... everything else was on pernament wind hold
high noon had puddles, bullet proof ice, grass, dirt

wednesday was ok... mt p had alot of ice and was extremely windy at the top ... the 'snow' that was falling at the time was more like tiny hale until the arvo

thursday was good but too windy(more so than monday) so only the v8 + a few tbars open... evertying else was on pernament wind hold...

friday looked excellent but didn't go up... probably wouldn't of survived the car trip home if i did...

I'm at island bend at the moment. Had a decent burst of snow about an hour ago but nothing since. I'd be very surprised if any more than 1cm falls tonight. Was even clearing south of thredbo late this afternoon and that is where it would be falling if anywhere since its coming from te south.

Not sure where to ski tomorrow. possibly some PB and some frontcountry.

No more natural snow in perisher overnight, we got the guns going though with wetbulb temps below -5 for much of the later part of the evening till midnight when i left. Clear and starry sky with gentle southerly and souwesterly winds.

I observe yet another wet day at my place. The 6th in a row - and half our average rainfall for July already!

I also see showers heading up to Baw Baw and Lake Mountain again. This system is still not over...

yes, a mate just called me from Melbourne ( Eastern burbs ) to say it was 11C and [auto-censor] down rain. Wonder if the moisture will make it to Buller?
