I don't know how the could only be reporting 2cm. But I'm guessing they wouldn't lie.

Going by the cams it looks like the cover held up remarkably well at Perisher with the exception of smigs.....however......the word 'decimated' comes to mind when viewing the latest thredbo cams, looks like they got hammered yesterday / last night [IMG]

Hotham has got smashed with rain over the last 36 hours and lost a lot of cover. So, we're starting well into the red with this system.

Hotham had barely any cover to begin with since the last system. Warm temps over the past couple of weeks made sure of that.

Its looking a lot better on the cams at Hotham already though. Looking forward to the net result come Monday.

Buller is still looking poor - the big patch of dirt at the bottom of Bourke St is still there.

Refering to my comment about being a fizzer, last night everybody was talking about waking up to 20-30cm of fresh across all resorts. All iam saying is this has not happened yet.Lets hope the rest of this systym produces the goods.

I'm really surprised at how much snow Thredbo has held at the bottom on the cams this morning - I expected it all to be gone...

Who was saying 20-30cm last night?

Most people have said snow from Wed morning onwards.

Have been following theweatherchaser automated GFS forecast for Hotham and it was damn accurate for yesterday forecasting 30mm rain 4cm snow and it held that forecast pretty much from about 96 hours out from memory. Saying 13cm today above 1450.

I have the feeling most of the existing cover that has been lost in VIC was pretty thin and fragile, eg Burnt Hut on the Buller cam looked nice and white 48 hours ago but I have been told that in reality it only had about 5-7cm of soft snow on it by that stage. Cams can be deceptive.

Again, no reputable forecasts were saying significant snow last night, just some eager punters!

PS. not very cold in MEL this morning but a definite bite in the wind

Rain is not the worst thing for snow, there is already a lot of moisture in it anyway. Think about how long a glass full of ice takes to melt when you fill it up with water. And then think how quickly that same ice would melt if you held it in front of a hair-dryer (warm winds).

Yeah I know, but there was a LOT of rain [IMG] I guess my real surprise is the depth of the snowmaking cover... I shouldn't forget from season to season how good they are at Thredbo...

Yes, there was a lot of rain ~60mm! Just need those temps to keep on dropping. -2 at the top of Thredbo now.

2005 had multiple +100mm rain events. That is a LOT of rain.
30-40mm rain events are par for course in an Australian winter

+5 at 6am or so when the snow report was done. A friend of mine up there says her thermometer reads +3.

Richard tweeted that the odd snow flake is falling in the village now.

Agreed choc, until water starts to flow down or across the slopes, and then large chunks of cover can be washed off the slopes. Temperature is also important. Rain falling at 2 degrees is different to rain falling at 10 degrees.

Was it last year or 2007 that the creek between Supertrail and Sponars opened fully after a big rain event? And there was a very good cover at the time.

That was last year SB. Richard had some good photos of that.

Up here in Sydney there is a hell of a lot of dust in the air this morning. I can't remember a time the sky has looked that brown.

Uh-oh. Still 10C here at my place. Walked outside and it by no means felt like snow up high. But at Baw Baw it's -0.2 [IMG]

Oh well... showers approaching... [IMG] anyway! Might turn colder with this lot.

Yeah last year. It happened twice actually. The first time was way more impressive though. 100mm was the cause.

I observe that in Thredbo village it is still raining with the temp ranging around 2-3 degrees. At times we are getting very wet snow - more like slush - and ice is falling off the roof. Hopefully that means good snow up higher.

I observe that with that rain band approaching Falls Creek from the NW we should see some decent white stuff falling on the Mountain Watch Cams...

Can anyone give us an update as to the quality of the snow falling at Falls?

Baw Baw is starting to get some of the white stuff to from the looks of it! falling steadily
