Falls looks like its been consistently doing the best out of this system (based on official statistics). Plenty more moisture coming over the next few days and much colder temps.

Just come back from Perisher, snowed pretty heavily all day and just eased up as I left, looked like we have had about 10-15cm since last night, and its as windy as hell, I like the look of the next rain band heading for the mountain.
We have not had rain today either.

At my place there has just been a massive hailstorm! It accumulated to the point to which it looked like there had been a dusting of snow. Here are some pics.

Looked impressive on the radar. Pity no resorts got it - it would have dumped hard and fast!

    How wet was the snow?

The pictures earlier in the thread from Hotham (from Snowobssesedgirl) look like it was very wet.

Aha. See what you mean. Wind just turned decidedly SW'erly and cold here in inner SE Melbourne. Could be a zany night up in the mountains.

I observe that there is the biggest, filthiest dark cloud mass sweeping over Melbourne from the SW and (hopefully) heading straight to Buller.

edit: hmmm looking at the radar though it would appear to be sliding underneath, but it's definitely tracking NW across the city atm

Looking at the Yarrawonga radar that mass may be heading to NSW resorts, here's hoping anyway.

I was at Perisher for a training course, the snow was a little wet at times during the morning but it turned noticeably colder during the afternoon and the snow was quite dry.

I drove back to Thredbo from the Skitube at around 4:30pm and there was a little bit of sleet at Bullocks Flat which turned to snow at around Ngarigo. The snow was sticking to the road from Rangers' Station but it is not yet accumulating in Woodridge.

I'd observe on the mountainwatch cam for Falls Creek (summit cam) that it is absolutely hurtling snow down at Falls.

Is it just me or is this system not living up to it's expectations of 40+ cm? (at least for Buller)

The snow at hotham has been quite dry this afternoon, each time I went up the lift hundreds of 1-2mm crystals would land on me, and they did not melt before I got off the lift. It looks like there has been about 5-10cm since I posted at 2, as you can see in the following photos:

This is the same place I took a photo earlier, the ruler I put in there said 18cm.

I'm sure they are crying their eyes out [IMG] [IMG] FWIW radars do not work very well over alpine areas, and it is puking down snow at Falls right now, so it is probably snowing at Hotham too.

... do not always trust the radars [IMG]

No it's not but that cell north of Yea may be. Though Buller is reporting rather warm temps, higher than anytime all day. Still, will probably fall as snow. Strange place is Mt Buller!

Looking at front valley mountainwatch cam, you can see the guns ARE firing. The lights from a groomer are shining on a gun now.

Village lift was closed, but it was snowing heavily at hotham central, and you could see it was snowing right down to the bottom of the basin. I could also see snow down to at least 1600m down blue ribbon (davenport access trail was completely white). I'll try to take some photos once visibility is better!

You're right, the snow was mainly sago but it was accumulating well and there were some nice spots to ski in. The wind was unpleasant at times.

In the interest of reducing noise...

This thread is for current weather observations only. Preferably at ground zero (the alps).

    Carry on.

I observe that Perisher has been copping heaps for the last 10 minutes... Snow settling even on the previously soggy cement pathway.

Yep' Perisher is getting pumped at the moment and the radar is showing a few more hours of it on the way.

Freeze level has droped and now below zero at Smiggins with Ridge still just positive. All heading in the right direction.

Would like some more live reports.

I observe that Buller AWS has recorded about 9mm since 5pm at marginal temps of -0.1 to -0.2. Has this been falling as snow or rain. Any first hand reports?

Ah, so no rain tonight, that's good. What do you think the net gain for the day has been?

I always think of sleet as the stuff thats hard snow...hurts your face as it hits you!

Buller will do really well once the cold change hits...the temperatures will probably creep up over 0c just before the front does hit though.

Does anyone know why snow doesn't accumulate in the village square under the camera area - as there is no overhead awnings above. I've been curious about this for quite a while - what's under there????

Been some really wet snow in Thredbo village all night. Not really settling any more, but it's still coming down as white. Up high should be good. Perisher will be loving it.

It says last year that there was only 9.4mm of precp it july? is that true?

Perisher temps are all below 0 now -2 at the top
