This is tops. I can't believe i was half pessimistic yesterday afternoon. 20cm+ last night and that was from nothing to significant on the satellite pic. The cloud mass showing up with the next front is huge compared to what we saw yesterday and last night. Looks like it has a good 3 -5 hrs of dumpage in it so i'd say another 30-40cm isn't out of the question by tomorrow morning. Got butterflies in the stomach. Tomorrow will be epic.

The rain gauge at thredbo is on the western side of the Eagles Nest. It gets hammered by wind, snow rain ice etc and is very prone to freezing over, so it doesn't collect much snow during cold systems.

The Khancoban and Cabrumurra gauges provides a better indication of what Thredbo and Perisher are receiving.

I observe that there is about 2cm of wet snow on the ground at Woodridge Thredbo. Its snowing nicely but the wind is up. Temp is still high - around 2 degrees so its tending towards rain.

I observe nice green patches around Mt Gambier and lightning strikes.

I also observe very little work happening today.

It LOOKS like its just about hit MT Gambier. Unfortunately the radar has gone caput but you can see it on the 9.30pm snapshot.

    ETA 5 / 6 Hours I would imagine!

Skiing today at Thredders was pretty damn nice actually. An easy 20cm up top, and there were only 10 people at the bottom of Snowgums for first chair (half of which were beginners) which allowed me to grab first and second tracks on Little Beauty. First thing, the snow was nice till around the Cat Shed, then turned a little gloppy. Kosci opened for skiers ~10am. Tomorrow should be nice.

As has been said many many times, the radar has not gone "caput" it is a part time radar only ... it is used for windfinding ...

How was the ski out from Little Beauty?

Bottom of Nigh Noon was very spring like - thin and wet. Top 3/4 was awesome. Easy 20cm as you said and still snowing.

    hey 2 quick questions.

    1. how long does it take for fresh powder to turn into meh snowbase... are we talking hours or days?
    2. Is there a certain threshold of temperature for the maximum snowfall for a given moisture in the air... so you have X lots of moisture.. would -2 produce less snow than -5?

Wang, the ski out of LB actually looked borderline, so I cut out to True Blue, which was fine. Thin, but fine. Even the ski out of F'web is skiable... just.

Buller has recorded 10mm this morning. Gauges ticking over nicely at Mt William and Mt Gambier. Temps still not that cold though but who cares. Looks like it will get colder behind thew next trough line/front.

Satellite pic showing big fat white band about to hit vic resorts. The next 5-8 hours should produce some awesome falls.

I observe a nice band of precipitation heading to the resorts on Weatherzone now... Buller is going to get hit first. It looks like that north west moisture feed has hooked in to the low that's coming through! game on!

Are there any other places to view live cams other than Mountain Watch?

Radar showing a number of waves of showers moving across Victoria. The waves appear more evident and stronger in the south, and are slightly slower moving than yesterday. Must be our turn for some rain [IMG]

Looks like LM will get hit soon. BB will surely be next.

Yeah looks great for tonight. A real good fall coming up I reckon. 40+cm fresh by morning wouldn't be unexpected for me. Latest radar looks good for most of the State. NW missing out a bit, but everywhere else will get a good soaking. As the bulk of the moisture is still to hit the mountains and the air flow it is still nicely from the W (rather than SW), Hotham and Falls will do very well.

I think the wind is starting to shift more SW. It just blew to the north a massive hunk of rain we wanted! Oh well.. it's heading directly to Baw Baw to do some dumpage.

There still appears to be a fair bit in it for the larger Vic resorts.

Hotham at -3.2C is now getting a bit too cold for decent snowfalls.
Hopefully it doesnt fall too much more. The most snow falls between about -3.5 and -1C

Interesting - why is that? Are crystals unable to form in the clouds or is the air unable to hold the moisture or something else?

Oh, and Sydney observations are a little chilly with outbreaks of packing my snowboard for the weekend.

A significant front is approaching Melbourne from the SW, and should reach the resorts tonight. LM/ Baw Baw/ Buller look to do best, and Falls Creek (being furthur east) should do nicely as well. =]

It was snowing very heavily to 1200m at Falls tonight. It's settled nicely around that elevation. The snow quality improved dramatically around 4-5pm when the temp dropped a little further. Anything with a southerly-ish aspect has been loaded up nicely by the wind. There'll be some sweet turns up there tomorrow morning.
