I'm only starting this one early as I wanted to point out what appears to be some temp inversions that seemed to have occured last night.

Just outside of Melbourne in Scoresby it got down to 0.9c. Yet Falls Creek minimum 4.5c, and Buller minimum, 3.5c.

Shame, I woke up today expecting the snow guns to have been blazing.

I observe that it got above 10* for the first time in 5 days today and this strange orange celestial thingy circle was observed in the sky which wasn't dripping wet stuff.

    Re: Observations 2nd - 6th June

I observed that the temperature at Perisher tanked at about 5.15pm falling from approximately 6.5degs to about 1deg in about 30 minutes. And further observed that the temperatures have now (10.20pm) fallen to about -2.5degs. I further observe that the snowmakers have fired up a heap of snowguns on FV. Which, I think, is the earliest I've seen them turn them on for this pattern.

    Re: Observations 2nd - 6th June

The initial system still looks to be travelling east from the sat loop with not much south in it as yet as progged by the maps. Wind has picked up at Thredbo from the west with the pressure dropping.

Makes for some interesting watching today.

    Re: Observations 2nd - 6th June

Windy and slightly warmer here in Melbourne today. There are 2 types of fronts I like in winter. The first is the one doesnt have much wind in front of it but you know the pressure is dropping and it's going to be big. The other is the classic windy and warm pre-frontal then a decent rainband afterwards. Today will be good watching to see how it pans out.

A lot of mositure on its way to the NSW resorts, pity Thredbo is at 0.7 as the moment, hopefully that will drop quick enough to get something more than rain from this bit of moisture,

Temps are dropping at least in NSW. Snowline around 2000m I reckon and hopefully we get a bit more of a drop before this moisture hits. MAy get a bit down to 1800m.

Temps dropped around 1.5c in the last half hour accordong to perisher weather stations. Probably a combination of time of day and front hitting.

Been snowing since about 6:30am at perisher and pretty much non stop rain before that, but nothing is settling as its still super wet snow, only one step from rain. Hopefully things keep cooling and things start to improve.

    Re: Observations 2nd - 6th June

I observe Thredbo's website is frozen, which is annoying, but if you look at the Charlotte's live cam it is really just white rain, not really snow, hopefully some colder air comes through because most of this moisture leaves Thredbo,

Even if it is negative temperature, if it is high humidity then it might still be too warm for it,

Thredbo looks to have got roughly 5cm at basin, with snow down to ~1850m, another 100m, would have been good for Merritts, as Miffy said Perisher got pretty much nothing,

Majority of the moisture is either hitting the south coast of crossing the border into VIC, only time will tell whether or not/how much of it will hit the resorts,

Mt William temps appear to be on the way down. 4C, and starting to rain.

The resorts are well and truly negative anyway, so anything that gets there will be in the form of snow.

    Re: Observations 2nd - 6th June

Further to that I'm observing on radar there's a major front with plenty of activity either just about to, or just has, hit Melbourne and heading in a nor'easterly direction straight towards the resorts. Can anyone on the ground give us a clearer picture of what's happening down that'a'way?

It would help us to understand what's going to go down throughout the day across the resorts.

I also observe that it must be going to get cold as another family of mice have made their home in my roof.

Based on Thredbo's cams, along with their facebook page, I observe that it is snowing in Thredbo, albeit lightly, looks like NSW resorts will get two fronts tonight, a small one that is tracking east along the NSW-VIC border at the moment, and the big one that is about to hit Melbourne

It looks potentially stormy in Hobart right now.
The radar is to be upgraded this year it is not a good indicator of what is actually going on.
It should be an interesting night ahead and a snowy picture in the morning

    Cheers for that
Benign gorgeous day here in the Illawarra
However just as the sun sets some of the scuddy CU cloud is starting to blow across
we always get more wind that anywhere else in this sorta system, so i'm kinda anxious. 100 forecast is a 100 to 120 gusts

Around 10mm in this initial band of rain, possibly more as it hits the mountains. Temps are good, it's still windy here in SE Melb.

I love these nights, wind howling, rain coming down intermittently but heaps at times, and cold. You know it's winter and you know it's Melbourne when it's like this [IMG]

    Re: Observations 2nd - 6th June

After lurking here for 3 or 4 years, heres my first post:
The radar suggests the front has pretty much passed through Cape Otway and Aireys Inlet. AWS's show 6.4mm rain at Aireys Inlet and 9.6mm at Cape Otway - they're at 85 and 90m above sea level. Temps have dropped by about 5 deg in that period but, as Ioweee said, the sun has gone down in that time so thats not telling me all that much.

BOM says that Cerberus just dropped by 3.6 deg in half an hour as the front hit, so perhaps the 5 deg wasn't entirely due to the time of day [/speculation]

Temps are all safely negative in the NSW resorts - -0.8 is the warmest and thats at the bottom of the ridge quad chair (1640m) down to -4 at the top of the perisher express quad. BOM says about -3 at Thredbo Top Station.

Finally, I observe that its bloody cold and windy here in Canberra.
