band of cloud heading towards Thredbo
temps look marginal ......
trying to get high noon and merritts open
I'm in Clayton at the moment, I had a look at Mount Dandenong this morning and there was patchy wet snow on the ground. Wet flakes started falling again as I left.
If there was snow at Mount Dandenong there would surely be snow in the Strzelecki Ranges just behind my place, their peaks are between 500 and 700 metres.
Hotham are reporting 18cms.
Looks like most of the moisture has finished for NSW, the models only showing another 1-2cm out of this system. Still 10-15cm of Natural is better than nothing and the snow makers are putting on a massive effort.
Puking down all last night and all today at Lake Mountain. Drove home from Melbs last night and coming over the Dom Dom Saddle (500m) it was snowing but not settling. Customers today saying there is snow on the road there now. At Narbethong (330m) it was sleeting on my way here this morning.
sorta disagree there
AXS -R shows around 30 mm over 36 hours Till thursday night for around the Thredbo valley.
Until that low moves away i wouldn't discount any futher falls for NSW
what donza said, i still think the low is sitting nicely atm, favouring thredbo & perisher imo.
Baw Baw is looking healthy.
Some poor bugger out there shoveling snow.
I can see it snowing now lightly up towards Perisher. Working from home this arvo so I have a better view.
i would rather be out shovelling snow than sitting in front of my computer!
Stay on topic.
From Buller's FB page: I think from Sunday
That is an excellent pic
One of the coldest days I can remember in this neck of the woods - Blue Mtns - max 2.7* today, wind chill below zero past 24 hours.
Based on radar nice bit of moisture slowly tracking north from South-East VIC, if it manages to hit the NSW resorts should be at least another 10-15cm
It's hanging out a bit further west than I initially thought, and 100km makes a difference here.
Just noticed that moisture tracking north looks like a mini front. May see some snow in Jindy tonight if it stays on track
Just from the looks of things it might turn out that Falls/Hotham do the worst out of this system, and Buller/BB and the NSW resorts (especially Thredblows) do the best.
its thiick as
The low is starting to spin up its first real band of rain from the SSE, around Traralgon. Sat pic looks nice.
This will be Falls / Hothams chance. It should come up with a southerly for them. Pressure still reasonable at the moment. Hoping for the best! Webcams tomorrow morning will tell the story.
I agree, unless thae cell deepens enough to get that moisture pushed far enoough NW. I observe the cell is moving slightly northwards with moisture levels buliding into long waves hitting the coast. Push little cell, push! Best case scenario could be epic for Thredbo/Perisher, epic as in another 15-30cm cold smoke onto top of small base we have so far. can only pray, watch the rotation and watch the cams really.
Won't be cold smoke
The rotation of the low is now grabbing some warmer lower air...uppers are still very cold..
but down low the air is starting to get warmer, as the low is spinning in air from the tasman
which means it can hold more moisture where it counts..
4.4mm for Orbost in 30mins, and it wasn't even hit by the heaviest precipitation, better hope this hits the mountains, on track to atm,
Yeap, your right Donz, but with the current cold air mass over the hills, any snow falling from the SE feed should still be of great quality up high. I observe a second feed of moisture moving staright over Baw Baw region, bee lining towards Buller and Co. Not huge moisture, but moisture all the same.
Posted over at the Ben:
I observe fairly wet but steady snow falling on the journo near Buller reporting about that poor dude missing. Look heavy ish.....and was live! Tonight could go off.
I'm happy at Least Thredbo will do well tonight. I'm going for 20cm in the village overnight. Nice stodgey base building snow.
Agree SB. Thredbo should do very well and Perisher getting more as well. Based on current temps in Eastern Vic I do not think the warmer air getting pulled in will effect the resorts when this comes through, but it is in a classic position to bring snow to Jindy. Temp in Bombala is at 0.8 deg so snow level seems to be around the 800m mark.
Off Topic: I hear if they get 50cm at Perisher they will open Mt P. Allot of frantic resort set up over the next few days.
I observe some nice moisture about to move over gipsland and on route to the alps
probably could be another 10ish cm tonight
Precipitation definitely tracking to hit NSW resorts, should reach them in about an hour,
I observe Baw Baw with 18.4mm since 9am
Buller gauge frozen up I assume
The moisture band that is heading north from Tasmania dropped around 20mm of rain in Eastern Tassie. Hopefully we have that type of mositure left in this when it drives into Vic and NSW. I'm agreeing with 20cm overnight in NSW.
Just got back from a run in Essendon, and the cloud ceiling has lowered once more, rained on and off the whole time and the atmosphere is super moist with mist and cloud buzzing around. Wind was straight up from the SSE, looks like the moisture feed from the low is making its way as far west as central Melbourne suburbs, and is heading north towards Buller and the others. I observe a broad band of rain is now fully formed along the SE flank of the great divide, and looks to be increasing and penetrating northwards toward Thredders and Perisher. Beautiful stuff!
Just got back from an overnighter down the Great Ocean Road. I can report that there was snow at Lavers Hill this morning and that it had settled on the ground. About 430m ASL there I believe.
70cm of snow on Ben in the last 24 hours & still chucking it down from the south / south east ! The mountain is closed with Dozer & grader hopefully expecting to clear rd by friday
Decent Falls hitting Bombala 750ASL last few hours , just need it to head a bit further west.
Baw Baw getting pummelled today... but temps are on the rise.
Dont worry about the temps just yet Ice.
Hopefully Buller is on the edge of copping some of this.
Gotta love the ECL; nice big fat flakes falling on our place east of Nimmitabel at 1100m ASL
Buller be too far West I think.
At the moment it looks OK judging by the radar/sat loop.
Bairnsdale radar is a thing of beauty.
Starting to worry a little. Temps coming up quickly now.
Thought that cool air would hold it down a little better
Observed myself pack the car for Baw Baw any way.
yeah infact i reckon its pretty much all over for buller hotham falls
only 2.0mm in the eildon gauge, matching the top of the mountain
is it me or is this current front too far east? The BOM radar shows it just missing the snowys but that could be because of a lack of weather stations, I imagine? It would explain why ThreeOaks at Nimmintabel is getting smashed.
