Not sure if this should be in Obs, but took this pic today (after lunch) above Guthega, couldn't believe how the snow was stuck to the trees from the blizzard.

    Edit: Guthega, not Guthries :)

Unplug from your computers and get out and enjoy
Pathetic effort by falls creek to not have the summit and international open. The fact they let it all get tracked out with closed signs up evidence they knew they should have had it open. Anyway poaching lines off summit early season at falls seems to be an annual event

Looks like yesterday was the day......it's already above 0 at Perisher at the very least so the fresh is going to get sloppy pretty quickly! Still it is nice and blue bird, should be a cracking day regardless.

hey Four square i think theres something wrong with the Perisher AWS. Its the only station in the region above -5 and the temp spike from -5.5 at 4:00am to -0.9 at 4:30 am and hasnt dropped since then. Is it possible for natural eddys to cause such a massive temp spike?

Re: Observations: 3rd to 9th July

I thought it was a bit strange too davidg, especially as all of their AWS's were in the positives.....but you're right everywhere else is still in the neg's and normally PV is a similar to CP where the cold air can get trapped in the valley and linger causing temps to get pretty low......

It is always the way in Aus. If you want freshies you have to be there when the snow falls. Once the sun comes out the fresh stuff is all over, but there will still be a lot of fun to be had out there. I observe blue bird bliss in the mountains today.

Came down from Buller sunshine this afternoon (after an outstanding day at Stirling yesterday) as the cloud was rolling in after lunch. I could see snow on the hills driving through Buxton, so I'm not surprised to hear Teckel's observation that L.M. has done well. What a strange system.

Yarra Radar shows some building moisture over Euroa moving towards Albury travelling in a NE direction.

    http://www.weatherzone.com.au/radar.jsp?lt=radar&lc=049

Should deliver another 5 to 10cm for Hotham, Falls, Thredbo and Perisher IMO.

The ridge over SA is strengthening leading to the decay of the front over Vic. Now two 60 knot fronts on BoM 4 am chart while WZ has neither. Look, they're either there or they're not - somebody's meteorology is amiss! All the cold air as shown by the speckled cloud on Sat pic is staying south and east of Tasmania.
The big high south of WA is STILL parked in the same spot so the score is: Big High 1, roaring forties' powerful westerlies 0.......W

I observed that this morning at hotham it was snowing lightly till about 10.30 am. After a little break it snowed a bit heavier for about half an hour. None since lunchtime. The sun peaked through a few times this afternoon. It seems to have clouded right in again and getting windy.

Perisher valley obs from the AWS indicate about 1cm since about 3pm. Not much showing on the radar so it looks like its being generated by orographic lift in the westerly wind.

Not sure about 16 degrees in Melbourne and snow in the mountains.
From what I have observed in the past 14-15 degrees or less in Melbourne then usually it snows in the mountains, depending on a range of factors of course.
14.3 degrees is the average for Melbourne in winter, and in July/August it generally ranges from 12 - 16 for most cycles.

I observe that the maximum in Melbourne today was 14.6, currently 12.1 - so all good for snowfalls [IMG]

Camped to the east of Thredbo last night. No snow on the east side of the mountains. Little bit of snowy fuzz up high at Thredbo this morning (8am) but in full sun. Snow started at dead horse gap and was falling all over the western slopes as per the BOM forecast. Down to about 1000m. Light showers on and off in Wagga all afternoon.

Not based on anything other than maybe 15 years of a snow obsession and checking temps and snow reports whilst living in Melbourne. Nothing to back it up however my scientific findings were if the maximum temperature in Melbourne was going to be 16 or under with rain then usually there would be snow from the system somewhere. My other observation was if the maximum temperature in Adelaide was 14 degrees it was a going to be a good system - moisture pending. Could all of been just wishfull thinking however Buller trips were decided on this observation and I had a lot of good ones.

Re: Observations: 3rd to 9th July

Fwiw Melbourne felt pretty cool today - fresh southerlies and mostly around 12 in the SE burbs - so was surprised when news indicated a 'mild' top of 15. Perhaps mild in a greenhouse but not exposed to the breeze. :)-0

Re the Melb maximum temp v snow debate - a 20 in summer can mean snow in hills while a 14 or 15 will not guarantee snow in winter.
