At Smiggins to bounce around on the T-bars today and the weather is absolutely feral. Winds are the strongest I can ever recall at Perisher, blizzard conditions that reduce visibility to less than 1M when the wind really blows... Should be fun [IMG]

From my kitchen table I observe sleet/snow falling, 100 metres elevation, just out of Hobart, hopefully the cold heads north to Vic.

Re: Observations: 3rd to 9th July

I observed this morning at Hotham that the visibility was poor and the wind was awful. by about 10am only blue ribbon was open as all other lifts closed due to wind. The snow started coming down around 10.30am. I dont know where the front is but im hoping the snow will be coming down for a while.
p.s. shouldnt we change this to obs 3rd to 10th july?

Wind slowly starting to slow down a bit in Thredbo, pressure still dropping and has been for the entire day, constant light snowfall in the village the whole day, with a lot of windblown snow flying around

Re: Observations: 3rd to 9th July

Kosciuszko Road - CLOSED at intersection of Alpine Way and Kosciuszko Road.

Snowy Mountains Highway - CLOSED between Adaminaby and Talbingo.

Guthega Road - snow on the road from Kosciuszko Road to Link Road. CLOSED from Link Road to Guthega Village.

The road from Mount Selwyn to park entry at Kiandra is also closed.

I observe that after a very quick run on the Hume T-Bar at Smiggin Holes this morning, I am now safe at home. The wind was atrocious, blowing people off their feet and down the embankment at the carpark. Unfortunately I have to agree with what a lady in the car park said, opening today was bordering on professional stupidity and very dangerous.

Also reports of windows being blown on in cars from the wind and also smashed from debris flying around. Be safe people [IMG]

    http://www.jindabyneaeroclub.org.au/pilotinfo.html

    WEATHER
The Jindabyne area prevailing wind is generally from the northwest. If the wind strength is 25kts + from the NW to SW expect strong sink on 30 and severe to extreme turbulence in the Jindabyne Valley. It is not recommended to approach the Jindabyne area in GA aircraft if Westerly winds aloft exceed 25 kts, less for LSA etc, unless you are very experienced and familiar with the area and you and your aircraft are capable of handling the conditions.

Rotor activity will be present in SW-NW winds over 25kts. Generally there will be a primary rotor in the Thredbo Valley and a secondary rotor in the Jindabyne Valley & over the lake. This secondary rotor seems to catch pilots over the lake near the township. Don’t ask me how I know this!

There is no AWIS at Jindabyne. The Cooma AWIS will generally report wind strength from 5%-25% below actual strength at YJIN. Temperature at Jindabyne generally about 1-2 deg. lower than Cooma. Underground wx

Allot of cars smashed up around Jindabyne. Saw a people mover with all windows smashed except the front windscreen. About 5 deg in Jindy and still windy with snow flurries. Up on the hill is apparently appalling but not much snow as yet. People are unable to get out of Guthega and very slow out of Perisher.
Best place to be is in front of a fire with a glass of red.

Yea, wind has been absolutely howling for the whole day in the village, with small pieces of snow falling from the ski but limited accumulation due to all the wind probably in a wind protected sport 5cm at most in the village, but I am sure there would be some massive wind drifts around the place, should be good when the wind hopefully eases up tomorrow

    where are you Sweens?

as CM said it's been a mixture of westerly Buller drizzle and snow throughout the day. There has been some accumulation looking at our balcony. Winds were wild. Mini Grand Prix GS on LBS had to be cancelled and about 150 kids and parents took a very slow ride up Wombat, watched all the way my Mountain Ops staff at various vantage points with Head of Mountain Ops at the top to make sure everyone was OK - good job boys.

Re: Observations: 3rd to 9th July

    back from falls
windy, but not that bad to be considering giving up.
Started snowing pretty well (proper flakes) in the afternoon (ice pieces for most of the day) and getting fresh tracks into lakeside area by 2-2:30PM. Viz pretty poor in general, but great fun.
    Snowy road, prangs, carnage.
Prob 5cm on car when left at 3:30PM, more up top, and a lot of wind transport too.
Snow quality really good at present. Nice and dry and fast
Best sort of day for skiing in Oz, snowing, windy, no people, just put up with it on the lifts until the next run.
Tomorrow is looking pretty sweet IMO (although not looking that good for going to work)

Awesome weather at Thredbo today from 10 30 am, Had an hours walk along the riverside track which was largely sheltered. Not really much snow falling, hardly any flakes but lots of ice to sting your cheeks, Wind gusts estimated at 70 to 100 kmh but didn't bother the rosellas .Drove up to Dead Horse Gap at 1 pm for lunch. Only 2 to 3 cm of snow on road but icy 100m before the summit and chains needed on 2WD. A certain AWD didn't cope! A few gusts caused a complete white-out for 5 or 6 seconds. Back at Bullocks Flat carpark at 3pm and 20 plus cars all with windows smashed in, some on both sides and covered in plastic. A big day at Windscreens OBrien tomorrow............W

Mini Tornado. Sticks, gravel and any other debris at +120kmh will do that. Only affected one part of the car park but gotta give credit to the Ski Tube guys who have worked hard to tape up cars and do their best to protect from further damage.
