Smiggins today was picture perfect. Light winds under 20 kmh after 11 am. as per BoM forecast. Deep blue sky and distant cloud to the far east and a thin band of cumulus running along the main range to the west. The snow is billions of 1 mm2 ice crystals and easily supports your weight on snowshoes rather than flakes in which case you would step on a snowbank and sink in up to your knees.Awesome snowbanks like sand-dunes behind rocks and trees which provided shelter from the wind. What a difference a day makes!....W

8.30am this morning it was pretty clear but windy at Hotham. Around 9am the clouds came in and soon visibility was carp. It started snowing at 10.30am and snowed heavily for about half an hour. Since then it has snowed lightly on and off.

Snow on and off at Buller from 11am. Wind has picked up and a little unpleasant at the top of the mountain.

Cant believe it. Went out visiting - still snowing - just came home - still snowing. Who wouldve thought that we would have had nearly 12 hours straight of snow at Hotham?

I observe that Selqyn, Perisher and Thredbo are all reporting 158.9cm?! whilst the heist in Vic is Falls creek with 109cms?
    Why ?!

They all use the once a week updated depth at Spencers Creek, not at the actual resorts.

Re: Observations: 3rd to 9th July

NO Selwyn is much lower and is located further from the 2000m range so doesn't get as much snow as Thredbo and Perisher in most cases. Plus lower altitude and flatter topography means it melts out much faster.

Have a look at the 3 mile dam readings on the snowy hydro site. This site is located a couple of km's from selwyn. Spencers creek readings are virtually located within Charloote Pass resort area so give an accurate mid to upper slope reading for CP, perisher and thredbo.

Peaked at 12 degrees here in Port, and now started heading back down. Had ice on my roof at the back of the house the past five nights now. My house is in a position where the temp will drop another 2-3 degrees lower when it is cold than whatever is registered at the airport.

3.4mm of precip since nine a Perisher and looks like it is ramping up with 1.2mm in the last hour. Temps have droped and wind direction now SW with the gusts easing.

Certainly that cloud is hanging on the hill as seen from Jindabyne. Should be good for tomorrow.

Re: Observations: 3rd to 9th July

Drove from Island Bend to Guthega after 2 pm. Snow showers increased to a steady fall and a mixture of stinging ice particles and 1 cm flakes leaving at 4 pm. Visibility 200 to 500m and about -2 degrees. The place was deserted save for half a dozen bods. Met some cross country skiers at Guthega Power Station. Even that 1950's dinosaur architecture couldn't be saved by the picturesque snowdrifts. They had had only one good day in the last week. That's dedication.
Looks like the upper cloud which gave Sydney its cold day has cleared the Snowies. There's a huge gibbous moon out, lighting up the snow clouds on the Thredbo valley range......W

I was up at 5:40am with the little one and this massive cloud came from the south and it dumped and settled for about 15-20 minutes. It then drifted up over the lake and on to Kalkite dumping the whole way. It really was close to a cm in 20 minutes.

    Strange but true.

Re: Observations: 3rd to 9th July

The 1038 hPa high sitting directly over the Snowies on the 10 am chart gave a perfect almost windless day at Smiggins. So good in fact that the RAAF decided to have a little training flight and buzzed us on top of Mt Piper at 1 pm in their Hercules/Orion?? Quite dramatic and unexpected against an indigo blue sky - a huge grey shape with no insignia powering out of the west, banking right then left and disappearing off to the NE. Much quieter than the a little Cessna on a joy flight which came over twice.
Rainbow diamonds in the snow in the afternoon sun.....magic.....W
