I observed three phone calls this arvo from two locals and one Junior Duck. The common observation was "its on", "see ya soon" and "like 2005 dad, that day it took us 5 hours to drive down from PB" (might be an enthusiastic youngster exaggeration)

I just had a look at the latest sat loop. Over the past 30 odd hours, this system has just gotten better and better!!!!!

Currently, it's pressure is dropping to low 980's and it's parking itself BEAUTIFULLLY over the Alps [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

Bit more to come, especially if the moisture feed from the SE and now possibly the W continues - AWESOME!! [IMG] [IMG]

And how cool is the Thredbo village cam?? Good snow falls to that level are just fantastic [IMG] [IMG]

The other half said it was cold, windy and a bit of rain down in Omeo. That means it is ugly with a capital UG up top.

The latest wxmaps run has cold air over the alps thru next week - so more snowmaking at the end of this system too.

The other observation was that everyone was getting blown off the hill.

I also observe that there should be lots of freshies on Sat & Sun

I just got back from Perisher, my car is parked at the tube because i didnt have chains, managed to hitch a ride home. There was a massive amount of snow fall today, possibly the heaviest most consistent snow i have ever seen in Australia. The only way i can describe today is WOW

Any estimates on how much snow fell today people?

Snowdepth is 73cms apparently, but I'm sure that doesn't include what fell today...

very heavy fall this afternoon. Snowed extreemly hard between 3 and 4pm.(close to 10cm in the hour) Temp was around -5 so very dry. As good as it gets in oz. radar looks nice right now. Looking like we'll cop it again tonight. Some sweet tracks on Blue Ribbon this arvo [IMG]

Think the scales is in mm not cm so I think that it might be 8mm an hour from 1.30 I could be wrong though

I Think it is more likely that it is a total amount for the day being graphed not an amount per hour

The measure is of rainfall not of snowfall. This isn't always directionally proportional (i.e. can't be converted into cm accurately) due to differing density in snow.

The graph shows 8mm of recorded, ACCUMULATED, "rain" from 9am this morning.

I actually posted the graph for the temp not so much the rain fall (as its not very accurate in terms of snowfall)

Looks to be hammering down on the Dinner Plain cam. I though we had seen the best of this but I think we have a bit left going from the radar. Will be interesting to see the accumulation in the morning.
Looks like there will be a bit of traffic to Jindy tomorrow night

I observe that the barometer at Thredbo Top Station has dropped 2 points in the last hour or so; there is a band of precipitation on the radars hitting right now and the village cam is showing liquid precipitation. Will we see some more flakes on the cam in the next couple of hours?

Here's the address of a chart of the infamous 2005 system 3years and 1 day ago in which it was bedlam getting from PB to Berridale and all points in between due to snow on roads. BH was correct in that it was a S to SE flow causing dumpage east of main range. Todays system is more of a traditional W stream. Now there's only 5cm reported in Jindy this evening in the last 4 hours but if it keeps up all night it could be fun and games at daylight. Enjoy

On a slight off topic....I observe that this thread is now the most posted in of this site all time!! 539 replys and over 20000 views edging out the 2007 tipping comp. I think there are some very edgy people around here.

On a more related note the current radars are showing there is at least a few more hours left in this system. But looking at the Satellite images I can not see it going on much longer than that.

Berridale has had light snow flurries come and go since dusk. Still hoping for a white morning. The radar is showing precip starting to spread out from the mountains. 60cm+ wont be unrealistic for the snow reports tomorrow which is northen hemisphere stuff. God I love weather!!!

The wind this morning was strong until about 10am where the history of wind for Falls Creek says it went from 17km to 2 and has stayed around that ever since

how is the wind. and is the snow too dry and geting blown off the runs into the trees?
Yes it is night time, but please let us know when you can. Radar and cams are producing the good at the moment. both dinner plain and threds have covered tracks about an hour ago with flakes still falling.

There has been a big fall of awesome quality snow at falls. I think at least 30cm since it started this morning, and it is still going. The whole village is drifted in deep pow - not just fresh snow, powder snow.

The last 2 days have been epic in terms of weather conditions. Yesterdays sunny powder conditions were amazing, today tracks were filling in between runs.

I'm so f'in excited about today I can't sleep. The plough just got out on the road at Buller in the village and on the flat section of road outside the old Latrobe building, cut a swathe through the fresh since last night ( no tyre tracks ) that is at least a foot deep. All the stairs in the Village square are covered in drifts that you could ski down and it's a blanket of pristine white!

    Go you good thing!
