My observations on some of the PV resort snow conditions post last nights snow and those winds but centred on the area between Front Valley and Mt P. Others would need to comment on elsewhere.

    1. 20 cms a fair average number.

    2. Areas out of the winds from the past few days skied ok. Not Powder and not glug. Quite good especially in sheltered areas amongst the trees. Sun Valley had some good skiing however the coverage was not consistent.

    3. From the base of Eyre the snow looked fine.

Once up a little higher there was a large amount of widespread sastrugi. The wind had been sweeping across the hill so anywhere exposed suffered. Even at lower levels.

    4. Wind drifts were a hazard for the unwary. In the picture above, and about 40 metres higher than the orange cone, we came across a guy, face down in the snow and unable to move.

Hit one of those drifts and looks like he suffered breaks to both legs. He’s a local so I can check in his condition later this evening.

Basic first responder administered till the arrival of the patrollers and later on the ambos.

    5. Just out of bounds the snow was in good shape. Well packed and easy skiing. Plan to go for a deeper look and ski tomorrow a.m. on touring kit.

    6. It was busy around Mt P and Leichhardt.

As a general rule each resort measures their snow depth in the same way consistently. Remember this is taken in the resorts over a much wider area than official Spencer's creek measurement which is only in a small area and at a significant altitude

Great observations, @SMSkier. Hope the guy wasn’t too badly injured - agree there were many traps for the unwary around the resort today, including on green access trails.

It must be nice to have a decent amount to measure. Maybe use the rain gauge, so much easier.. @snowgum 'All resorts agree', do you want Vail to buy the rest as well.

Was some sweet runs at Falls this morning and crowds were very low. Chain free drive for 4WD and AWD was a
bonus too. Made up for the epic on the Alpine Rd to Hotham yesterday

Gotta love Vic going back to school a week before NSW. Ruined Castle was absolutely mint and never more than a dozen in the queue

Got warm in the afternoon though. Might have stayed close to zero at the top but the bottom was a river of slush.

Car was saying 5C when we got to it about 4. Not sure what happened to the Windy with Snow forecast?

Heaps of snow to play with but needs a groom.

Getting fresh tracks somewhere around Burnt Hut.

I am leaving tomorrow, but what a difference 50cm or so has made to the place.

I thought it was pretty self explanatory but anyway................sometimes severe weather can trigger slightly "premature" births in domesticated animals (may happen in the wild as well but I am not sure) and a measure of the severity of the weather is the amount of new arrivals. I counted 19 yesterday so a decent event was this time frame. My record is 32 which was during the "Arctic Vortex" titled storm period a couple of years ago. However it must be stated that actual size of my mob is approx 400 smaller today when compared to the size I held during the AV event. Extrapolating it out brings the total to 23 so this recent event was not trivial.

The usual ram and ewe dance I would suspect ,forward planning if you will. The drought here isnt the same animal as it is west and north of here ,we are technically in drought only having not received average rainfall for a substantial period of time however that is a totally different thing to getting nothing to not much ,so our land isnt under as much pressure animal wise and can still hold decent levels of stock ,not full capacity though but around 75-80%.

I think he was saying it was a bit wild and woolly. I expect to be lambasted for continuing the puns and being off topic but it is well outside the date range.
