Lake Mt looks waterlogged.......
Bitumen clear atm.
Windy and a couple of degs above freezing point.
Ski School. I stuck my hand out the window and got hail. Of course what I get one minute can be very different to others.
No snow on the northern Brindies yet
as I and our dog take a walk but hopefully ...
Southern Brindies are rather light on
Pretty wet down here in Davenport area at Hotham. Unfrozen moisture on vehicles etc., and slushy underfoot.
First timer here.
Have been lurking tho. Thought I'd put up a comment about how much snow Mawson Tow Snow Cam is showing. I don't have a before and after shot, but I seem to recall it looking pretty bare only a few days ago and now it looks half decent.
Just coming to post about the wetness at Hotham. we lasted 830-10 and now having coffee in Chill Bar.
Going to head back to the lodge and do a run of the gear in the spin cycle then dryer. No chance of them drying on their own! @LMB you certainly weren’t wrong about the jacket!!!
My gloves are saturated because of the over thumb hook, the way it absorbed the water and it wet down into the glove -oops.
Yeah can confirm rain at Blue Cow. Everyone saturated......
Only Brumby T bar open. Staff talking about the possibility of even Tbars on hold due to high winds.
Yep at Blue cow as well .... absolutely soaked.
The reported 30cm over night .... complete rubbish.
Snow yesterday here was much better and plenty of wind drifts filling it in.
Snow today is heavily moisture affected.
Did a few laps out wide dropping the ridge and same deal... heavy soaked snow.
Hopefully temps drop as it’s way to warm.
Having fun though
I know POW said to expect some dampness, but these FLs seem to be higher than expected. I didn't think rain was on the cards for Perisher
Tate we do.... Or use the Charlottes locals pass and head out somewhere from there. It’s pretty cheap.
TBH, at the moment I’d be happy with the Paralyser ridge from Mt P and the valley behind Paralyser towards Guthrie’s trig, till the weather settles down a bit. Should be able to manage the creek crossings. It’s too brutal for me in the current conditions but no doubt the cover should be adequate out there now. Albeit, the windward aspects might be icy and scoured? Pics will ensue when a few of us get out there. Plenty of others will be doing the same......
Thinks this morning.
Seriously, I’m on mountain for the first time and I’ve chosen NOT to bother. It’s been pissing rain all night. Meh..far too much of a snow snob. I’d have to buy a day pass and for that it’s just not worth it.
Temp turned neg at 10.38am at 954 masl at the high perch over Tumba ,ok its -0.2 but I will take it right now. Light drizzly stuff almost solid ,wind still high (havent got a speed atm) from WNW ,can hear it whistling through trees above us in the KNP.
Sheep laying down even in the low ground ,dogs not stirring for love nor food.
Don’t mention the war.
Yep rain always for today with warming ahead of the next cold snap this evening.
Bottom of Merrits (1665m) at Thredbo and the precip is semi frozen, kinda like freezing rain. Higher up it’s more frozen but still nothing nice
What do you do if Buller blasts hail and rain at you and closes half the mountain:
FL is marginal for Perisher/Thredbo @ 1850/1900m for most of today so it's solely reliant on UL's.
UL's & increasing wind (a-cooling effects) will only improve as the day marches on.
Proper snow lowering to ~1600/1700m mid-arvo for NSW is my guess.
I wish the Bluff Spur camera at Stirling was working...
And what’s the read for Vicco this arvo?
Great work on all this, as usual Pow
I don’t imagine it would look pretty at the moment.
Sitting in Harrietville Bakery observing heavy r**n in fog, 11deg was reading on the car when exiting for much needed coffee... and the hope of elevation bringing better things.
Should start cooling down at Buller around 3-4pm, and really starting to snow 5-6pm, with the snow level dropping to village level (1600m) and below.
Big drop at Hotham and Falls about 6pm, but should start lowering before then.
Meteye have temps in neg at PV around 12.30 / 1pm "heavy snow" forcast from 4pm.sounds ominous...
I reckon the change is pushing through my neck of the woods right now.
Strezlecki rangers south vic.
Pooring rain windy as and temp just dropped a degree in the last couple of minutes from 10.2c to 9c.
I’m at 410m asl
I spied some flakes! Then they disappeared a few seconds later. Such tease
You in Melb or?
Big tease all day
Flakes for a few seconds at the wombat lbs junction, rain below.
Best described as wintery mix
Saturated, retired to Tirol.
Yeah, but it's the not knowing that's killing me...
Melbourne Balloon this morning indicating FL @ 2000m which I will concede is a little (+1-2C) warmer than what models have been indicating.
Below is Melbourne Observed Vs Progged respectively for 10am:
Still on the fence on if I should drive up to Perisher for the weekend - it's looking a tad rancid however still keen to get a fix.
I obs DGZ (snow development) is rubbish with that drier layer ~4-6km.
It's a shame Mount Gambier hasn't filed a balloon obs for several days now as we'd have a bit better idea of timing otherwise.
It’s snowing now in Hotham village.
Back in the lodge for a couple of hours. Will try again this afternoon- with fresh dry gear.
Mt William has dropped 1.2 C to 2.6C in the last hour, so it's on it's way.
Very dark here in the strezleckis about to come down again, sky has that cold crisp snowy look to it now.
See what the temp does with this next band about to hit
Not quite but I am on a Bourke st...
I know it sounds like a cliche, but DONT DO IT. Perisher staff will be doing their best to open new terrain, but if these winds persist, its all pointless. Crowds were mental this morning and there will be more people tomorrow, so much worse. Watch the winds and guestimate what chairs will be running. If they can get the main chairs at Blue Cow and Mt Perisher up and running, it might be OK as the crowds can spread out. Tonight will be a huge one for the groomers too. There is now enough snow to open more runs IMO.
Right now it’s definitely the wet stuff falling at Perisher (Blue Cow). Not pleasant but at least the queue for Brumby T bar isn’t too long. Hope more moisture arrives soon with colder temps as cover here is not great
Where is this new snow? The cover at Blue Cow is worse now than on June LWE
Stay on topic. Weather observations only
I thought my last two posts were observations (of rain/snow cover)!!
Wasn’t directed at your post.
Strezleckis are uniquely under the influence of the moist, Westerly flow funnelled south of Macedon, laying orographic cloud East of Melbourne.
In short you're gonna be ticking over with precip, under that cloud, all day.
Himawari8 shows it building West of Warragul who's racked up 7mm since 9am.
Here’s a photo from Blue Cow:
Been at Thredbo since 8.30, first 90 minutes smashed out 5 runs, was super fun up high from top of Crackenback, found some awesome stashes. Temps warmed and now pretty sticky. So glad we didn’t go to Perisher
Spot on pow! It’s bucketing down as we speak temp down to 7c.
When this band hits the mountains it will be wild!!
Mount tassey gusts to 96km and 5.8c @750m asl
Isn't there some rule about Adelaide max temp not exceeding 13 for the system to bring snow instead of....the other stuff?
