I observe that the rock on the right hand side of the basin cam (Thredbo) is dissapearing
Looking at the cams, a lot of Perisher would appear to be on wind hold as there is no one on mount P or the ridge chairs.
Also appears to be puking there rather than raining at the moment...
Perisher - foggy as hell, no more snow for the last hour or two, temps increasing a little?/
i observe a gap in moisture over the alps
this very good as temps are above zero
Heavy precipitation heading for Buller from the N. Some lighting as well. Hopefully the most intense cells will pass to the west.
I think next 6 hours are going to be ugly.
0.3d at Thredbo top station.
I'm going to go offline until tomorrow - can't watch this!
As mentioned it looks like the temps have risen just as the moisture has stopped. No rain in Jindy now but still quite cool at around 7c. I've heard reports of about 5cm down to about 1500m this morning and now stopped.
Band of rain headed south for Hotham and Falls. Temps too warm for snow.
Had 5-10 here at hotham this morning. Clearing and temps rising. Currently +1.0 degree and blardy windy.
Im also at hotham had about 10cm as DHS said now it has turned to glug out there. big band headed our way full of r**n. hopefully goes back to snow later on this arvo
About as borderline a system as you could think of. So close to snow, yet so far.
Starting to have some clear precip now. Lifts have stopped turning, could be because of the lightning coming
Reckon Hotham and Falls might miss the worst of that rain band judging by the radar. Can't say the same for Buller though, they're gonna hammered!
I observe that hell can in no way be foggy...smokey perhaps ;-p
Turning to snow (wet) at L.M
Around 5-10th cm fell at perisher this morning, then as it warmed and began to rain it stopped. No precip for over 2 hours now and partly cloudy.
I observe that the Rock Creek Gnome has lost his little white coat from overnight. He needs a new one.
I observe temps have dropped below 0 at the top of Hotham (-0.5C at 1pm: BOM) and that the cams higher up are showing definite signs of new snow accumulation.
I wonder though how far down the snow goes before it becomes rain. Falls and Buller both sitting between 0.5-1.0C.
Suggests the extra little bit of elevation in the Snowies could give the NSW resorts a little top up over a reasonable area from the next set of precip to come through.
Overall I've got to admit that I think todays result is starting to look significantly better than I expected (talking from a north of the border perspective here). I was expecting mostly rain all day with some noticeable deterioration in the cover lower down. Instead a few cm's of snow this morning, then the rainbands skirted around and missed the Snowies once it got too warm for snow and now the next rain band (if it does not stay west of the Snowies) looks to be bringing slightly colder temps and maybe a few more cm of snow again at least from about 1600-1700m up.
except Perisher is 3 degrees and Thredbo is 2.2 at the moment
Buller just copped it, 7mm in 2 hours. There is a bit of a break coming up though.
My comment was about what temps will be when the next band moves through, not what they are now b efore it hits the Snowies.
Falls and Hotham have dropped to 0C give from 1-2C and look to be still perhaps (slowly) going down a bit more, so I am assuming once (if) the rainband that has affected them hits the Snowies a similar drop in temp will be seen. IMO the drop will actually be a bit more as the NWS resorts where actually hit by sun for a couple of hours where as Vic resorts were not (going by the cams anyway) leading to the slightly warmer surface temps around midday in NSW.
its freaken chilly in melbourne atm.
I agree we had the sun out down here from 12-2 and it warmed up a couple of degrees in that time as it was also the warmest part of the day. Cloud building again now and the temp seems to be falling down here...
NSW resorts have the advantage of being higher but the disadvantage of having the warmer air. I think it will all balance out, IMO.
Temps are all over the shop
It was raining and plus one when I drove through mt hotham at 12:30 today, it's now bucketing down in the glenrowan maccas... Lots of grey clouds still around
Hopefully temps go sub zero soon. There is a lot of rain heading south towards the hills.
Baw Baw has gone negative.
this next rain band coming from the northwest is just passing through Wagga where the temp has dropped from 15 deg to 11 in 1 hour. Hope it reaches PB.
And gone back up again. Sitting at 0.7 now.
mate just called mt buller is being hit with some goodness snow flakes.
have a look at the current snow cam for the village square
Looks like sago to me
just about to dump something at Perisher. Temp continues to drop at Wagga. 15.9 degs to 10.7degs in the last 2.5 hrs and thats where its just come from. Im saying snow at Perisher for the next couple of hours.
-1.4C at Buller. Down 1.5C in 30mins, whaaaaaats going on!
Says it all really.
This says a little more.
Still 3 degrees in Perisher. There better be some cold air with that band passing though Wagga Wagga
zero accumulation on the roof of hotham central, which must be up around the 1750-1800m elevation mark. i cant see it being more than 60-70m vert from the summit)....if there were any falls this morning they are gone now. not good news as far as i can tell.
Also that last buller cam shows no accumulation even though it's just started snowing.....just hope it stays that temp for more than a few mins
I live in Wagga, just had the heaviest rain i've seen in years pass through even a bit of hail. Lets hope when it hits the mountains its snow.
Falls also dropped 1oC in 30min, hope it continues but who knows?! They're up and down like a yoyo!
just an observation from melb and a question....this morning it wasnt particularly cold, yet been freezing since about 10am onwards....is it possible that this snow is the start of the cold air hitting the mountains that has been around in melb for the last 5-6 hours? If so that would have to be good news for the remaining wet stuff in this system.
