Mountainwatch shows dumping snow at Hotham. Still puking at Buller.
And this is why i didnt want to put snowfall amounts on this system, it's way to unpredictable. Go Buller!
Looking at the IR Satellite loop, the moisture is coming around for a second bite, this time with colder air.
IR Loop Clicky
Pressure is low, moisture is high, 500mb temps are low, there is serious lifting going on through the mountains, as soon as that air/moisture from the north hits altitude it's dumping its load.
I havent been excited about a system all season.
Moisture/cloud is being sucked from up equator way in one the biggest fetchs' ive seen. From Darwin all the way across to Vanuatu, that's intense!
A thing of beauty isn't it?
Buller is getting absolutely smashed with very heavy snow ATM.
And it's moving really sluggishly in an eastward direction.... can't wait to get up there tomorrow.
Falls stopped on Buller VS cam at 16:40
Waiting for next wave.
Any guesses as to how long before NSW gets a slice?
have a look at whats coming through yarrawonga way now. lets hope its clips the alps if the temps stay down. wow...bright red! http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDR492.loop.shtml
looks to be heading straight for buller!
NSW temps still above zero. Perisher 2.4 at the top of the mountain, 1.8 at Thredbo.
This will be a close call for NSW with that band approaching...
It was a sunny afternoon at Blue Cow, and felt quite warm. No wind. Clouding over rapidly now at Perisher Valley, but still above zero at this stage.
The new snow was dry and fast for a couple of hours this morning, but turned to glue off piste once the temps rose mid morning. The tracked out areas remained nice though.
I observe out my window at Hotham some lovely big fat flakes falling. It's been snowing moderately for the last hour or so and there is a cm or two accumulating on the car outside. I also observe my ski jacket very damp from the r%$n this afternoon.
At Hotham ATM and observe that it is absolutely puking. Not sure how low it's going but doesn't appear wet at all at about 1500. Seems strange given temps were given as 0.8 about half an hour ago. Anyone have any explanations for this?
Raining at Perisher right now. Temp 3.2.
Cold upper atmosphere temps would be my guess but not really sure.
As I understand it even if surface temps overall are a bit warm, if the upper atmosphere is colder than normal then the colder denser air aloft can form downdrafts that lead to localised cooling near the surface and these downdrafts often will be associated with precip as they displace the warm surface air which gets pushed up. In the process this creates instability and helps to realease more moisture into cloud as the warm air pushes up. If so would explain the swings in temperature that have been seen during the day. From memory the models did show the upper atmosphere wedge of cold air pushing over the alps before a corresponding drop in surface temps with a front occurs.
Anyway that's just my best guess as to what's happening. Could be wrong though, there are others who know this technical stuff better than me.
I think NSW will be right given an hour or two. I'm basing that on the Cabramurra temp dropping from 6.5C to 3.5C in an hour. If we see a similar drop further south in Snowies as that airmass moves in then that would put temps on or just below 0C and good enough for snow above 1600-1700m IMO.
man this system has been so unpredictable
I've been observing Falls Creek getting smashed with rain all afternoon.
Not sure that's really true. It's played out as expect so far. I didn't quite expect snow in Victoria yet (expected later tonight), but apart from that ...
Temps dropping though
Off Topic: Great name
Looks like snow at PB now
Roof of V8 turning white
Confirmed. Snowing quite well now.
Very windy now too. Fat flakes.
Im calling it nukage. And yes I'm a little excited.
Wow have a go at the Mountainwatch cam for Front Valley!!! Wait until the camera passes the light and you can see the nukage for yourself. Tomorrow is going to be epic!!
Gone negative at Thredbo top station. I'm excited. The rain band moving accross dropped 30mm on Wagga in very short time. Initially thought it would be too warm but looking good for 1700M + at least.
Perisher Mountainwatch cam showing some very significant snow coming down. Me likey longtime.
holy crap i have never seen such dumpage on that cam in my life (especially impressive, as it comes up so strong under these dark conditions)
(and it seems to have stopped/slowed now)
Thanks for that explanation Blue Hue, seems fairly logical
Temps still dropping. -0.7 top of mountain.
Snow still going. Radar shows good follow up.
Sorry Sandy, PB.
It's ok.... I'm just asking because if people are just coming and looking for the first time today, they don't want to wade back to find out who was where!!!!
temps are dropping at falls atm
hopefully they can get below zero soon
The center of that low has remained near-stationary for the past 3-4 hours.
Is that a good thing or a bad thing in your opinion?
Just turned to snow and dumping at falls. Hoping it goes all night now
Now that the temps have turned....puuuuurfect.
Not very nice of the Thredbo Village cam to stop updating. You would think it would have the decency to stop working on a clear night rather than potentially the most interesting night of the season. Back to the dark old days when you had to wait until the daylight hours.
Anybody in Thredbo care to share their observations now?
Looks like around 1-2cm an hour with neg temps in NSW at the moment. More moisture to come on the radar
What cams best show conditions at night?? Buller Village is good....but any others? Any other sites? (particulary live motion footage - see pukage happening!)
Baw Baw showing r**n at the moment, not cold enough yet.
temps have dropped below zero at falls and are still dropping
apparently it is snowing up there
Snowy Mountains -
Adverse weather - Alpine conditions, Snow and ice
Lanes Affected: All directions
RTA advice: Reduce speed, Exercise caution
Other advice: Kosciuszko Road - Caution snow and ice on road from Wilsons Valley to Perisher.
Looks good then down to 1400-1500 m
Absolutely no surprises there...
Re: near stationary low- Great sat loop at the moment
Centred right over NW Vic
Wet snow has been falling here at Smiggins since about 5:30pm. Big flakes the size of 20c to 50c coins coming down now.
