This front looks worthy of an observation thread.
Rain has crossed the border and is into Victoria.
It looks as if the first bit is virga, as there is some dry air over Victoria (humidity around 40% mark in many places). This rain band is so extensive that it won't take too long for the air to humidify, and eventually allow rain to reach the ground.
Just starting to get some showers in Melbourne this morning.
Good rotation near Adelaide.
Grand SW fetch as well
BTW how do you post live sat pics?
I link the images directly from here (depending upon the one I want (vis, infra red, wv)
Well there is lots of rain here in Horsham now/at the moment, this is a huge system, how many fronts are present within it?
I've counted 5.
I love these agreeable high pressure systems.
The rain certainly did seem to dry up as it came across the border from SA last night Here is a tiny version of the last 24hrs of IR Sat and Radar, click through for a *huge* animated version. You can clearly see some nice rain coming in from SA, and then it fizzling out as it came into NW Vic.
24hr Australia Sat + Radar
Quite wet here in Melbourne now, seems it is building up again. It is great to see some interesting wet weather around these parts again!
Here is the link to my weather station in Jindayne (4.5km south of the town). A little to far west to be much good for forecasting but should be ok for the obs in this thread. The rain sensor is dead at the moment but should be back up for the next frontal system.
This is just a hobby so I don't guarantee the ongoing support for this but anyone is welcome to use it.
Welcome Outerlimits and thanks for posting a link to your station. That should be a great resource during the season.
Always like to see this.
13.4mm for the day at Thredbo
Pfft, a measly 3mm for today so far. Looks like more coming on Melb radar, but has to cross mountains.
Pressure here 974 hPa, corrected to 998 at sea level.
Yeh, the rainfall so far has been somewhat underwhelming. Then again I think it's going more interesting from now on...
Only prefrontal has come through at the moment though?
The sat image is quite impressive, lots of cold air
My thoughts exactly. The front tomorrow night will bring some very cold air and will bring more widespread rain to the south. Most of the rain has been in the north of the state so far. But do they need it!!!
looks like there is some heavy rain heading to the NSW alps. The next few hours should see some impresive accumulations. NSW BOM are going for snow down to 1200m on Sunday. Looks and sounds like winter still a touch on the warm side today but I think Sunday will be a different story.
We've had intermittent showers in Jindy for 90 minutes or so now. It's not cold though, 12 degrees or so
Nice work with the weather station and what a great first post!
Yeah nice work mate.
Should get cold and wet tonight, some good totals north of the ranges, in the west and north tassie today. Should be a good day tomorrow.
Temp has dropped below 2 already up high at Thredbo.
Temp at Thredbo AWS lingering around 2, in Jindy 10
Barometer 1001.5mb at Thredbo.
Temps starting to drop in Western Vic as the winds swing WSW. Also dropping at Hotham now down to 2 degs. Should be looking good tonight.
I reckon there is 10cm in it. With all the rain that has fallen it will be great to get this freeze to get (dare I say it) 'ground cooling'.
Hotham now down to 1.4 deg. A drop of .6 in half an hour. The next front is in the bight so I'd think about 12 hours before we start to see some action on the hills.
Certainly wont hurt!!
bugger the ground cooling...I'm calling base builder
Hopefully that fall of rain up on the main range might setup some good ice climbing later at Blue lake
snow at falls ?
Still 2.5 degrees up there according to the bom, just looks like rain.
I hope he was joking.
I got this feeling....2005, i hope im wrong.
The really cold air hasn't even reached Adelaide so don't worry just yet.
From the look of the latest sat pics, the pool of cold air with this front that is about to hit South Australia is significant.
Parawa West and Strathalbyn (south of Adelaide)temps just dropped by 3-4 degrees so take that off the latest Adelaide and Melbourne temps and you'll get an idea of what is to come.
Then again... temps are up again, must have been the cooling affect of the rain squalls in that front. Still, temps are likely to drop again a bit later.
I don't think the rain is going to hit melbourne until this evening. Nothing on local radar, but Mt Gambier looks nice.
1 st snow in thredbo 09
Click for larger ... still fairly warm in Vic, No blue bars yet, but Fletchcam looks fairly nice!
Other graphs at:
Oh and the cool change went through Warnambol about 3hrs ago so it should hit melb within the next 2 hrs and the hills about 2hrs after that, it is slowish moving.
Go the 'bo!
go the sno in bo! that cam just updated and its starting to stick!
and that will definitely cool the ground!
Trentham - 705mASL 9.8°C, windgust 64.4kmh (windchange not through yet), rain rate 78mm/hr, 6.6mm since midnight
Love this!!! Sheets of rain roaring in from the NW,wind gusts to 64kmh, problem is that the rain gauge is missing some of it because it's almost horizontal at times, puddles......pressure 992.8hPa(ish). Woodheater is going. Lovely and warm inside, wintry outside.....if it was snowing this would be a serious blizzard bring it on!!
just turn the rain gauge on its side!
Looking at the cam, I would say that is water accumulating in puddles not snow yet. The temp looks to be sitting around 2 degrees, too warm for snow IMO
And yet over here I'm sitting otuside in the sun no wind and about 23-24C ... boring ....
Jealous Jane, very jealous.
Getting some good rain now in Woodend. Temps have started to drop in Ballarat so the first of the cold air isnt to far away. Maybe a bit of snow on Mt Macedon tommorrow as well.
No rain here yet. Big load over Melbourne heading this way, but from what I see there is a hole in it, and the hole will go over the top of us. (Why does this happen...? ) Looks impressive on a 512 km radar though!!!
Pressure here (corrected) 991 hPa.
Been raining here for the last 30 hours pretty much non-stop, and most of it has been heavy
What the...? I went to Melbourne today and not once did I come across a drop of rain!
Speaking of which... it's started here. Reasonably heavy, too. I can actually hear it on the roof
Any reports from people on the mountains?
Increasing intensity, and more on the way as it turns more westerly.
Wouldnt be any snow yet smitty.
Rainband looks impressive now, i would have liked it to look like that when it was WEST of Melbourne, but you cant have everything.
