Ahh there you go... My mistake... April... That is why I dont work in Climate
Coldest Australian April temp was recored at Charlottes last night -13c thats cold!!.
Just a side note Friday 8th May looks interesting for some low level snow in SE NSW. The Resorts could possibly miss out but I reckon Brown Mountain might get its first hit of snow for 2009. Something to watch!!
Id say based on that it would have hit in the range of -15 to -20 in some of the cold air pockets of the main range.
-6 at Baw Baw last night. Was 2C here this morning, it rarely gets that cold in winter, let alone April!!!
Looks like a high will settle in for the next week or two. Temps for the next week are nothing to get too worried about. Long range forecast suggests cold front events later in May. Now that's what we need!
Mmmm don't see it yet but here's hoping.
MELBOURNE has shivered through its coldest April morning in over 50 years, with temperatures dropping below freezing in some suburbs.
Melbourne recorded a low of 2.9C just before 7am, the equal lowest April minimum temperature since 1957, while a number of suburbs had temperatures of between 0C and 2C.
In Coldstream, in Melbourne’s outer east, the mercury dropped to -2.7C, while Mt Hotham had the morning’s lowest temperature of 4.4C – a day after the mountain recorded the lowest ever April minimum temperature of -8.2C.
Melbourne set another record yesterday when it recorded four days in a row below 15C for the first time since 1949,
The rainwater that collected in my wheelbarrow over the last few days was covered with a 1 cm sheet of ice shortly before 9am this morning.
I thought we would never get 50 year lows out of the Melbourne weather station again. It is in a tiny fenced triangle surrounded by concrete buildings and a 6 lane road. The entrapped heat effect of all that concrete is significant. Obviously the amount of concrete, buildings etc around that station was less 50 years ago...... so it must have been bloody cold last night !
The frost was thick in Sunbury.
Snowy Hydro took a depth reading today. 53.9cm at Spencers Creek
A rare thing happened - our overnight min was warmer than Melbourne's! Only by 0.1 of a degree Ground was still cold enough for frost though.
So the resorts were'nt lying about getting 50cm's
Do we have a base and will it last?
i reckon some of this snow will last if it doesnt get too hot or rain and we get one more front. I have a feeling baw baws snow might just stick around till the next system..
In September last year Baw Baw lost half a metre of snow (or more?) in two weeks. Temps here were much warmer (20+ degrees) than they are expected to be over the next week (around 16 to 18 degrees). Meant to be cloudy too, so sunlight/dust will have less effect.
