Excellent planning there
No-one else picking up these fall rates? Buller registering 5mm an hour...
That bay is really ruining the fun for us in the SE bayside burbs
No chair required, just a good grip on the rope
Snowing in the Melbourne CBD
33.4mm at Buller since 9am
As i say that something develop right over head and it is crazy out there at the moment (Cheltenham)
Shared eyewitness reports (from a skier and qualified meteorologist) of flurries of windblown white skiable precipitation drifting around the 10th floor window of the old Medibank building in Melbourne's CBD.
10C observed Melbourne AWS and probably warmer with heat island effect. Horseshit, I say.
10 floors ain't going to cool things down either...
Long thunder boom over Jindy. and it's absolutely pouring down - but nothing on the Cooma AP gauge. Might go further east yet.
Pretty wet around town
Short severe storm of high wind and rain just blasted through Thomastown, now sunny and calm.
Check out the cam at dinner plain ...looks like minimum 30 cm of fresh !
Falls reporting 40cm+
Wild weather now coming through Jindy. Severe weather warning in place for damaging winds and blizzards up the hill. Snow to 1000m. Please, please, please let me be snowed in tomorrow!
So Gully Cam at Falls looks about as good as it did at any time all season:
completely filled in:
Cooling now Peri.
Snow road should be renamed Water road
.. So hard to look at cams, epic dump!
Buller VS stairs are just about becoming a ramp....
Professional Meteorologists agree is that it was Graupel.
still windy here in Syd, clear sky,
and when will someone install a coin operated lift somewhere!
So something resembling hail than snow.
EDIT: Yes, I know the definition of 'graupel', but at +10C this meteorologist has his work cut out for him proving it's 'snow flurries'
Man I would love a good quality pic of this framed.
and looks like already in canberra
A few cracks of thunder in Canberra.
Yeah major winds and rain with lightning and thunder and small hail in North Canberra
BOM is listing Major Flood Levels for Ovens/King ectc.....travel in NE might be a bit testing overnight...
Mt Buffalo has had 90mm in 24 hours and is expecting further falls O/N.
Trying to get some info on Baw Baw but the cams seem to be stuck on images from August 30th. Given the good accumulation at Buller it seems highly likely that there will be some cover. But can't confirm. Anyone out there got any other sources?
Hail in Canberra. Wind turned my umbrella inside out and messed up my hair.
And pharst !
Jees you're all copping it down south!
We've got warm NW winds (strong mind you) and sunshine on the Northern Beaches (Syd)
Surf is as flat as I've ever seen it. Not even a wave.
Just got the fire going before being smashed by hail, thunder, lightning, crazy wind gusts and moments later....
This is just so sad...
Amazing falls for this time of year, I'm dying of jealousy, so wish I could be there.
It's sunny, warm and blowing a gale here in Port Stephens.
Sorry if this is common knowledge but why do they finish the season and stop the lifts if there's so much good snow?
There was basically no snow when they shut up shop. This has all fallen in the past couple of days.
Because all the staff have finished for the season and gone home. They need lifties, ski patrol, medical centre, ski hire shops, ski instructors, food outlets, cleaners, snow plough drivers, parking attendants, oversnow transport etc etc. All those people can't be plucked out of thin air. Also, even if they did, virtually nobody shows up anyhow, and those that do are most likely season pass holders. Even the last week of the season there was virtually nobody around.
A couple of years ago perisher did extend the season by a week, they gave a few weeks notice, convinced staff to stay, and then virtually nobody turned up. One day there were 12 paying customers on the dashboar IIRC
Perisher and Thredbo should have continued given its NSW school holidays.
Killed off by season passes would be my guess. No upside. Would have been mainly season pass holders. If they had said say "its outside the defined season, and tix are half price for pass holders" we all would have gone off. lose lose
That said keeping FV open probably would have not been to onerous for Perisher given they have stayed open for snow play
But it was school holidays last week, there was 50cm of fresh snow during the week, and the resort was virtually empty (perisher). So why would they want to extend this week? The resorts are aware it is school holidays, but make a decision based upon both commercial factors and also based on ability to staff appropriately.
not enough Normos Steve.
Thank God for skins,
By the way, I can't find mine.
Searched high and low for them, but to no avail.
@Ziggy, they haven't been posted back to You by chance? Your ph. No. is still on the bag.
wow major accumulation at falls
I've been saying this for a while now, the end to this ski season is a carbon copy of 1992. It just came a tad earlier in 92 but the huge rainfall & late season snow dumps are the same, along with the massive flooding in NE Vic. Remember going up to watch Dartmouth dam pouring over the wall & the Albury/Wodonga causeway flooded till early Nov.
Fraid not Stansi.
I observe there has been over 70mm of precipitation in the perisher guage since temps went negative yesterday. The temps at the AWS did go positive today, but would have been below zero 1900m plus. The spencers reading this week will be interesting. The main range will have great depth, when people can get out there.
I am genuinely in shock......staggering amount of snow.
