An old pics thread is going in the snow talk section but thought a dedicated BC one might be fun, a good way to celebrate the backcountry in OZ and its history. Also thinking in light of the tragedy this week (and condolences to @telecommuter and friends and family), to reinforce the memory of people like Dave and Graeme and others that have a great passion for just being out in the mountains. Keep on exploring. This from my pack horse/guiding days in the OZ BC, circa 1992 (or thereabouts). Descending from Gungartin Pass to Schlink Pass.

Is a back country camera different to a normal camera?

I must have some early 90s pics lying around at home. Will have to see what I can pull up. You guys are rocking those particoloured lycra leggings. I had the garish yellow and purple court Jester variety. Stylish. I still have them but the elastic is knackered and they fall down. A good metaphor that.......

I found a pic of those Harley Davidson skis....Rossignol TMS 215cm complete with heel locators. I called them Harleys because they were only good in a straight line.

Inaugural outing of the new Hallmark Chrysalis tent. That thing could certainly accumulate some condensation

No doubt Albina Lodge was in a spectacular location. Great pics. Never saw it myself, it was removed the year before my first summer visit.

1990 below Club Lake moments before we were smashed by a massive thunderstorm, only time I've truly feared for my life with the amount of lightning strikes hitting nearby.

And we all remember the Kinetix pants and fluoro colours of the era...

Love the fire in the snow, they did keep you warm. I must admit though I’m a bit over snow camping and prefer a bit of hut comfort. Getting soft. Great photos thanks. I may put a few up when I get home in a month.

The old dunny at Cleve Cole, it was completely buried

Mid to late 80s Mt Stirling was a bit more BC than it is now, and probably its heyday as far as skier numbers go. Some weekends it was like Bourke St up top with plenty of ex-army woollens on show.

A tracked out/skier groomed Dugout Bowl..

Untele, what was the story behind using hickory skis in 1980? Were they vintage ones or still state of the art?

I’m not as old as you....

You only asked because you know I have them up on the walls, these will have to tide you over till I can pull out a bottle of red and look through some old pic’s

My family room wall! Tin hut in all its glory, one of the best mtn huts, always love getting g to Tin, probably more relief than anything....

The small frames are pictures given to the +1’s dad after a rescue he was involved in near the grey hill cafe, awesome views of the back of the main range. Igloo is over injured party!

A few slightly more modern Pic’s

The fire place from four mile, pic was taken on our first ever ski tour in 96!

And a few of the favourite huts! Tin, Horse Camp and because @Kletterer asked, okeefe’s

    And wheelers verandah

It was the change over era from wood to synthetic.
Norski in Sydney ( a shop just dedicated to XC / BC equipment ) still sold hickory skis as well as the new fangled ones that even had rudimentary patterned bases.
Mine were 2nd hand for $25!
I upgraded to the infamous yellow Epoche 1000s in the early 80’s then Kathu XCDs later

Meindl 3 pin boots, Dynastar Montangue xcd skis, Aussie disposal gaiters, Opshop top and pants, Leki adjustable poles (sometimes)
Descending off the back of Loch using the "Salmon spearing turn" as coined by Mick Hampton.

Lean into the turn until you are about to fall then a quick uphill pole plant as if spearing a Salmon change leads and repeat.

Disclaimer 'Mick was taking the piss and not advocating it as good technique'
Took me years to uncleanse it from my muscle memory.
