I have a scanned copy of Neumayer's diary for that expedition (as well as digital versions of nearly all Von Guerard's sketch books). Interesting trip and they thought they had lost a man on Kosy in a blizzard. He turned up, walking into camp. a month or more later (I forget). Von Geurard could sketch quite quickly and is regarded as the most accurate of all the landscape painters in Australia at that time. There is another sketchbook which will have similar sketches but some colour added (or colour notes) and that is how he did his paintings years later.
The State library in Victoria has this painting https://www.slv.vic.gov.au/head-mitta-mitta-eagles-view-mountains titled Eagle's view of the mountains and is said to depict the start of the Mitta Mitta river (Big River) looking at Mt. Wills. It is in fact a view of Mt. Feathertop from near Dinner Plain. The State library also gets it wrong by saying Mt Wills was named after William Wills when in actual fact it was Arthur Wills, who was the magistrate at Omeo in 1862. Those Kosci sketches turned into a very nice painting also. A bit off topic.

So Winter '77, do you have an exact date?

Also, assuming you took it, could I use it in an article I'm planning?

Did you go inside at the time? Did you ever use it? My understanding is it was pretty close to uninhabitable after it came off its foundations in the monster winter of '46...

Its not my photo . Its one of Mick Hulls pics. Yes i visited it plenty of times and stayed inside it overnight twice. It was a rough patched up affair but for a teenager with no money or torch ,it was better.than risking getting lost in the dark .

Doing a bit of a cleanup, found an oldish one of me, on Mt Ginini, early 90's, on my Plenks. Those skis ended up as a bike rack for a while, man they covered some ground, soft sided, 3 pin.

Well, whilst we've got a bit of a Brindabellas flavour going at the moment, here's another shot from Mt Ginini, looking north straight back to Mt Franklin, where @telecrag's last photo was from. 1995. You can still see the ski runs cut into the snow gums on Mt F. Last time I was there, there was quite a bit of regrowth happening on the Mt Franklin runs, I think they'll disappear soon.

I think telecrag an I were skiing the same rig, Karhu GTs with the new fangled NNN-BCs. Edit: the Karhu GTs had full metal edges, I don't think that is what TC has.

Thanks for that. I've been trying to work out exactly where the four old ski tows on Mt Franklin and Mt Ginini were. I don't know the area well enough to plot them on a map, but now I have at least a rough idea.

Pretty sure there was at least one Ginini run on the east side, facing Canberra. KInd of criss crossed the road to the summit.

Also on Mt Franklin, on went down the north east side.

Yeah, there's a decent book on the subject called Skis on the Brinabellas by Matthew Higgins, but there isn't the sort of map I was looking for. Anyway, here's all there is on ACT ski tows in the Aust Ski Lift Directory.

Have done both, but mostly driving to Mt Franklin. Parks ACT is a bit more cautious about leaving the road open beyond Picadilly Circus nowadays I reckon, so if the snow is half decent, the locked gate at Picadilly Circus tends to get closed a bit more frequently than perhaps back in the day. However, I don't live in the ACT anymore so not quite as up with the local happenings. However, from memory, 1995 was the last biggish snow year in the northern end of the park/Three Mile Dam (near Selwyn) and the Brindies had good coverage in August - probably 50-100 cm I reckon. I got a few Aug 95 Brindies ski trips in. Interestingly, the data for Spencers Creek wasn't anything out of the ordinary that year, so the northern end of KNP must have gotten special love.

The scariest thing about that "old" pic is that i remember you posting it in the original trip report not that long ago!

Haha, was wearing a long wooden shirt thing. We used to shop at the army disposal.

I went in on the road, back in the day Id just drive in in high range until I got a bit stuck, park it, ski, come back pop it low and get out. Then they started locking the gates a bit, so bikes or walk. Now Id say its ride from Picadilly when there is snow. My last actual ski was in 2008 I think, while it was snowing. It had a snowpack until the mid nineties, I think 95 was my last proper spring style ski there. Its a be there on the day now.

Valentine's hut is bright red now. It was repainted a year or three ago. I was there during the Easter the work was being done.

Easter 2018. It was a good hike from the Guthega Power station to Valentine's hut and back via Horse camp hut over three days and two nights. The OP posted a photo that seems to be from before when the bushfires came through and burned the snow gums rather badly.

The hut was painted red more than 3 years ago, I think it was 2005. That was just a work party when you were there.

    All those gums burnt......
I remember the trip ( from my photos)...snowed for 5 days.......it was the first extended trip my wife had done....crying every morning ....when she put on the cold pink woollen mittens..until her hands warmed up

She went and brought some serious mountaineering gore tex mitts after that....

My other memory was having the mixed grill at the Blue Bird Cafe in Cooma post...is it still there??

Going through an old library, this is the run on Franklin that had the car powered rope tow, I think the photo is late 90's.
