Thanks again for your wonderful contributions Jon. [IMG] A quick question... what were they doing pouring concrete at Pretty Valley in 1970?

I know that there was no ski development over there and I haven't heard of any major hydro works there since 1960?

EDIT. Silly me. [IMG] Curra has pointed out that Jon was referring to PV Lodge, not Pretty Valley to the west of the ski resort.

^ Don't tell Rob Spargo, but I had to lift each pic in its frame off the wall, rest it on the bar bench, to reduce the glare from the bright sunlit background behind me. Ssssh. Our secret! [IMG]

    Re: Old Falls Creek.

    Nice work VSG. [IMG]

    Wish list.

    - I have yet to see a 1950's photo taken from The Bowl showing the Nissen and Collis tows on the summit. They're shown on the map I posted earlier in this thread and there are a few close up pics of Nissen, but none of both lifts from the bowl.

    - And where on earth was the 1951 Myrtleford Ski Club lift and how many years did it operate?

    - Finally I'd like to find out which companys made the current chairlifts. The ski season appears to have finished prematurely and I didn't get up to Falls this year to make notes. Apart from this, details of all 40 lifts at Falls are almost complete. http://wikiski.com/wiki/index.php/Australian_ski_tow_directory#Falls_Creek

    Re: Old Falls Creek.

VSG, nice (on the sly) snaps.

However those shots are probably around the 73/74/75 mark as the motel (now hotel) was not built until the early 70s (72??) from memory.

Be good to see if we could get some early snaps from the good people at Cooroona and Diana, both long established (and very early) lodges. I used to play in the area next to Cooroona as a kid - before Ripparoo was built, it was a flat site which accumulated a lot of snow...great fun.

Steve Lee's old man must have collected a few snaps of old FC in his time before heading north.

Jon, do you recall Big Al at Diana by any chance. Not sure if he was up there when you were but you never know.

Just trying to remember the name of the big Austrian guy who used to run the lifts up there in the 70s/early 80s....Jon, how's your memory? (Pretty good so far I reckon...) Seem to recall he retired up to the Gold Coast but the damn pills haven't kicked in yet and my memory is on the blink today (need to drink more Scotch).

Wonderful pitcures VSG......could have been taken in 1970!

Likewise with the memory pill/Scotch deficit problem, BK, I'm trying for the life of me to remember the name of the family at Diana then? Just the one teenage daughter - and maybe a younger son? - who used to do odd days during the holidays for Alpine'. Big Al rings all sort of bells......but no immediate image forms.

Austrians were pretty thick on the the ground then. Zigi & Renata Haberzetl (sp?) ran the ski school, Joe (Reitner I think) was the (moody) brains behind the cats' cradle of telephone and lift control wires that preceded workable radios. Walter ? at the Frying Pan. Walter (Wally) Erlacher at Alpine then Koki. "Big Hans" Fischer at Koki.....he may the one who went back to the lifts after I left?

Hallo Teckel...inept of Cornwall here......didn't realise each new 'album' had to be made 'public'. Should work now. I'm thinking my underlying problem is because we use aol rather than explorer and this still sometimes conflicts with thrird parties. But emails to and from all the old mates are everything to us so we'll stick to our longstanding aol address.

I've uploaded that map onto Ski Maps. There are now 11 maps of Falls Creek over the years showing the increasing lift coverage from 1950 - 2000 (and the shrinking area serviced by lifts in this century).

Pretty cool bunch weren't they....err, we? Hopefully many of those 'beautiful people' are still out there right now - skiing with the grandchildren!
Apart from Julian by the fire, the only other I can put a name to is Alex ? (right, in red sweater). He was a regular instructor from Austria.....nice bloke.
The dinner scene has Jeff Henke, Zigi, Lorna Dunkley, Bill Bridgeford and Renata (Mrs Zigi) with the blond hair.
Perhaps we should offer a prize for identifying "Superman"? Had he a beard then I could hazard a guess....but this one looks clean shaven.
    Many thanks Teckel

No! Curly hair never lent itself to 70s dangling locks.
OK will come clean....I'm centre, seated, fawn jumper in the 2005 pic. Wife, Sally, short hair back left.....and still smiling despite it being her first meeting with these "legends" of my past!
Thank you Teckel for the posting.....if not ID-ing the wrong man.

JP - Hans Fischer it was.....well done.

The family that Diana Lodge (still do?) were at Swan Hill as I recall. Maybe ASB can help out on this one?

BK...the Big Al wasn't Albert Costello was it? He met his wife-to-be, Shirley, in 70 or 71 when she and a friend worked for Alpine'.

Bogong.....nothing nerdy about putting down lift - and other - details. Time moves on quickly, as do people these days, and memories soon get lost. After my time, many and better people have been involved with the FC lifts this past 40 years, but I'd hazard a guess that much of the pre-72 info is held in the heads of just two people...but my "sources" are both now in their eighties. I was just a passing individual who happened to love what he was doing and took an interest for those few years.
    Stick with it!

I think Lyn is at Trackers

back to the dinner pic. I think lady in red on the right is Di, Heinzy's partner

also back to Albert & Shirley - I think the surname you want is Costa, not Costello. Their 4 boys are all top freestyle skiers. Adrian was in 4 Winter Olympics, including as flag bearer.

    Hallo detectives!
All pretty spot on with the ID parade.....must get everyone to hold up numbers next time! I'm just checking with Andy (once Kellett now Biasiutti), leaning back on the left, but I'm pretty sure the beard between Yogi & Di is Geoff Marsden.....one time skiing Egyptian mummy at a carnival.
Of course, Costa not Costello which I had on the brain since my wife has friends in Italy by the latter name who have been phoning this week as they flee bad fires there.

Hallo Teckel.....could you do the honours again please?
    https://picasaweb.google.com/112419887678209537868/SpargosDeIcing?authuser=0&feat=directlink
I'm not sure that many of the mainly "Alpine" workers in the pictures of a routine 'Spargos' evening, lasted beyond that season. A young Heinzi is in evidence....as is part of his outline, behind the big chap in the de-icing shot. It wasn't often that a storm was followed by such a perfect morning for the job.
That's Van Spargo's head behind the bar.
The young lady on the right, smoking and in a red jumper was Jenny Myer, a nurse (from Ocean Grove, then) who I fancied rotten.....but lost touch with when we both moved on. Anyone able to add forty years and recognise her??
The girl in the centre - haired tied back, smoking, fawn jumper - is Patsy.....and was here to stay with us in Cornwall a few days ago. Long since married to a Canadian , daughters, grand-children. Just as nice as she was then - and proof of many enduring friendships blamed on Falls Creek!

Jon, sorry i haven't got time to put the pics up.

the lady in red smoking and looking at the camera is Marnie Searles (married John Searles but split up quite a few years ago). she still skis beautifully and spends every winter at falls.

Saw Marnie on TV a couple of weeks ago, she was presenting a fashion parade at falls and was featured on The Circle. She still looks stunning and is a beautiful skier. She spends her winters at Falls Creek and her summers in The Seychelles,.

Re. nurse Jenny. don't know whether it's the same one, but Heinzi used to frequent a 'nurse Jenny' before he met up with his current partner.

Ah...Heinzi...what a lad! Brunette on one arm and blonde on the other! But I don't think it would be the same Jenny with him later on....I'm guessing she must have taken off traveling.

Sorry, Cw, I can see where you're coming from but that's definitely Jenny and not Marnie....who, as mentioned was very much with John at that time. Though I knew them well enough out on the slopes, the Kilimanjaro set was definitely one above a liftie's beer and carpet bowls session at Spargos.

Just one other name as a definite is the lady looking over her shoulder, centre of last pic. She was Marg. Drury - daughter of old Hobart (Sandy Bay) family. I visited them between seasons but, again, lost touch later.

Might be Marnie....not sure if that is John to the left (partly obscured). Thought they originally had a chicken ranch or some damn thing in the Seychelles - hence the various sojourns. They had a son, Paris, not sure what he is up to nowadays, nor John. Saw Marnie a couple or so years ago at a distance with her young beau. Good for her. She has been a remarkably consistent part of FC for many years and that is a great thing to see. The lady in the second photo, partly obscured, in the white top looking to the photo's left....not sure, may be Anne Abel Smith (nee Kidman)....a wild guess. No doubt someone will prove me worng on most points here....
