Thanks Db, that looks like the year range. Dads old Photos span from about 1947- 1960 and are not in order, however I think the car and the ski scenes were photographed in the same year.
Hi dbski your pic is definitely an FC although I am pretty sure prcoy's pic is an FE holden, same body shape although before the FC. The FC had the chrome trim that drops on the back door, while the FE had a straight chrome trim on the front guard that may have run onto the front doors as well.
Hotham used to be referred to as the sleeping giant. When did it become just the giant? 1987 with the opening of the Heavenly Valley quad or 1997 with the opening of Gotcha, Keoghs and Orchard?
Hey everyone, Here's a short history on Murray Valley Ski Club I've just put up! https://www.australianmountains.com/#/murray-valley-ski-club/ Might interest some of you.
I just read Thomas WHiteside's article on Murray Valley Ski Club. I had also wondered about that strange building beside the road at the start of the Razorback, but unlike him I didn't have the energy to do any research. It's an interesting and nicely written article. Well done!
Yes 81 was a record breaking year. It was the year after our lodge was completed . I have photos of that season.
Was reading this: https://www.ski.com.au/xf/threads/what-exactly-is-the-lower-sun-run.84979/#post-3940538 Realised that trails appear and disappear over the years (e.g. Holy Mackerel) and then found a collection of old Hotham trail maps: https://skimap.org/SkiAreas/view/1169
There's few unfortunately missed maps there.... Around 1987, when they had the new lifts on it (1984 Big D, 1987 Heavenly). On which they had the new, sometimes stupid new names, some since removed: - Shangrila, was Wendix, changed to Shangrila, back to Wendix - Seseme Street, now Mother Johnson's - Rollercoaster, now Brockhoff - Brockhoff Access, now Sundowner - Beauchamps, now Off the Edge - Harper's Gully, now Imagine - A1, A2, A3 (ridges), renaming for the gullies, Race Gully, Gunbarrel, Twilight Zone, plus Purgatory Spur.
I do miss the simple names of A1 , A2 and A3 left of old brockhoff poma. I tend to forget the many names of runs now.
Also missing Rickshaw, skiers right Blue Ribbon lower, named after the legendary Hotham poofarmer who constructed the run. Its grown over now
Yes, hardly anybody has heard of it. I last skied there when it was half overgrown with thin saplings, probably around 1990.
Probably last time I ventured in as well. I know where there is a full size map showing the run, I will get a pic when I can
PR Coy I am captivated by your dad’s photos... particularly the one with the dog in the foreground and stepping out. Would you mind at all if I displayed it/them in my unit at the Arlberg? Regards, Simon
Have you seen the bumper sticker you can purchase online with a stick figure skier hurtling towards pain in a cart wheel?. The caption reads: "I do my own stunts!". It is so apt for my kind of skiing!
Hi Simon, It would be great if you want to display any of the photos. I will see if I have a higher resolution of the dog one. I noticed the one I have is fairly low res.
Hey guys, looks like I'm driving over the GAR from the Omeo end heading to H'ville on the snowiest and coldest day of the coming unsesaonable snowstorm (Monday). Anyone ever heard of a road closure this time of year? PS we don't have 4WD tho do have front WD which helps a bit on the ups. Cheers.
Take some chains. Unlikley to close because snow accumulation struggles at this time of year due to warm ground.
Ive seen 30cm shut it for a few hours in November, just the drifts around the cross cause the issues, but vicroads normally get it open pretty fast due to the trade traffic. Agree take yer chains
http://www.janebunn.net/mt-hotham Take wheel chains if heading over the Hot Ham road tomorrow and Monday. It looks like winter is coming back. In fact I would take XC BC skis and have a ski on Monday or early on Tuesday!.
Hi Hothamite, After such a long time since the post I am replying to, I am hoping you still look here. I am a foundation member of Vagabond, and heard of the photo of people skiing off our roof when the place was half finished in the winter of 1981. With no heat and a bumper year the place was buried. I am putting together some club history where old pics are much sought after. Is there a possibility I can get a copy of your photo ? best wishes Ian B
