This isn't a pic of mine (I'm old, but not that old) but I loved this story.
The first ski jump in Guthega was built in 1951 by Norwegian immigrants, who in early 1950's worked there for Selmer Engineering Company of Oslo. In this year they formed Selmer Norwegian Ski Club. Each year in August they organised in Guthega an international ski jumping competition to celebrate the birthday of Norwegian king Haakon VII.
They built two ski jumps in Guthega: a K20 and K40. In August 1952 they organised an international competition in which 100 athletes competed. One of competitors was Halvard Dalheim, who was the chairman of Selmer Norwegian Ski Club and before coming to Australia he competed in Norwegian Ski Jumping Championships. This event was attended by 1500 spectators, winner was Peder Bottan who jumped 41.5 meters and runner-up was A. Pillinstpae.
In 1953 a new K10 ski jump was built for novice ski jumpers without specialist equipment. Moreover the largest ski jump was enlarged from to K45. Thanks to this in August 1953 Syvert Ravnevand from Norway set up a new hill record and the longest ski jump ever in Australia in this time - 50.49 meters (former record was 7.49 meters shorter). During this event two other ski jumpers jumped 49 meters (Rolf Killingstad and T. Lillefjord). The Competition was attended by 2500 spectators!

    Guthega 1953.

Interesting that many of you were introduced to skiing by your skiing parents. I was first in my family to ski, purely by accident. Sunshine happened to be open late April the year I was there. Some Canadian friends lent us skis and took us there. Next time was 10 years later and pregnant, at Perisher.

Often wonder how different my life would be had Sunshine been closed. Still living in Qld and scuba diving I expect and not spending 16 years interacting with unknown ski tragics LOL

I had never skiied until I met my partner in my late 20’s. She was a super keen skiier, so I reluctanctly came on a trip with her and was hooked:) Now I ski 100 days a season, and she does around 10. Funny how life plays out;)

Haha! Wonder if she regrets taking you ;)

My ex was a long time skier and my first Perisher trip was with him. The kids and I have obviously continued on, but to my knowledge he hasn’t skied for 20 years. Many sliding doors.

My first ski trip was 1977 staying at a mates caravan at Berridale, packed my bag and $400 savings and hitched a lift to Jindy in 1981 at age 20 and ...... went skiing

I grew up and still live on the Gold Coast.

My life revolved around surfing, at 22 in 1985 I jumped on an Alpine Tours bus with a couple of mates, and was hooked. Went back to Qld handed in my resignation, headed back south and became a ski bum.

Pure coincidence followed by a recession, 1982 and then 6yrs of good income and plenty of work.

Another coincidence was first trip o/s and the floating of the Aussie dollar. Living on tips, banking income, even ski bums could live the high life.

Haha! My daughter was on the TV ads one year. We’d wagged school on a lovely bluebird day and got pulled over by the film crew at the top of Mt P. Maybe 2011-12ish. She’s the “more variety” “more fun” kid :D

Similar story for me. Only started skiing at around age 24 when I left uni and got a job. A mate took me down in ‘81, and I couldn’t see what all the fuss was about. So it’s called the Snowy Mts, ya got 3 metres of snow, so what? Met my future wife and civilising influence, who happened to be a partner in a ski shop, and then trashed my new skis in the miserable season the following year. Never looked back really.

I was first in my family.

1994 Nikki and I were armed with 3 kids aged 1, 3 and 5 and went to Thredbo for some snow play. Our next holiday wasnt until 1999 now with 4 kids and we got stuck in.

We havent been on any holidays since that doesnt involve snow

This is in Selwyn in 1983. My one ski holiday as a child. Mum was upset as these 5 days as a family of 6 on a budget staying in Talbingo cost the same as Dad spent in Thredbo for a weekend. That's me with Nan holding my shoulders. Didn't ski again until we had P plates.

Your introduction to skiing was uncannily similar to mine (and in the same place!). I was travelling across Canada in April 1990 when I decided to have a day at Sunshine Village to try skiing. I was totally hooked and when I got back to Australia in June I went to Thredbo for a weekend, it's been my home mountain ever since.

I was also the first in my family to try skiing, although both my parents were good water skiers when I was a toddler - when I was old enough to try water skiing they had sold the boat.

Here we go, am about 4 or 5 not my first day skiing. But was gun shy after my dad broke my leg as an 18mth old!

I didn't like skiing on my own, so this is what they did. Until one day when I was about 5 the older boys staying at cabra with us bribed me with a chocolate bar, it started a life time of chasing boys down the hill!

Apex snow school 1991. I'm front row second from right. Betcha every pair of skis in shot is 200 cm or longer. Those Dachstein foams I'm wearing leaked from the day they came out of the box and as a result became by far the smelliest footwear I've ever owned before or since.
