Question Opening Weekend Skiing?

    Looking at the snow cams and the weather I can't imagine there will be any skiing at Thredbo on the opening weekend?

    For skiable snow its a better value $$$ purchase.
    Its why after 7 or 8 season passes at Thredbo we become other place skiers.

    Thredbo's fine when the snow comes. But yeah. If you want to knock out some early and late season runs. It's marginal.

    The snow will come. Thredders will make some snow when it gets cold. You'll be fine. And the crowds at the other place can be hectic.

    Meh .... Thredbo rarely has enough snow for the steep parts to be good. I'll take the consistent variety over the rare indulgences.

    But yeah. When thedders is on. It's pretty epic.

    LOL the terrain that has decent snow 80% of the time at Thredbo ain't that interesting ...
    Basin , Karels , Antons, Sponars, Merritts .... all pretty much Perisher gradient

    I can find “interesting” in those areas.
    Just need to know where and go for a stroll off piste.
    No crowds in The Plains of Loneliness and Despair!
    Any hoo, I enjoy a tootle at Perisher-Vail every now and then, it’s all fun.
    As per OP, prolly, definitely, maybe no skiing this w/e.
    Lotsa other fun stuff tho.

    I disagree. As soon as the Kosi is open its got the best terrain in Oz. With the best snow, when its blowing. Plus I can't deal with all the humans at 'Flat White'. Over there you just spend time going places.

    Love Thredbo when the snow Is good but Perisher has better snow as it’s higher and bigger. (12 square kilometres )
    The lowest level of Perisher is at the base elevation at 1,720 metres (Thredbo base 1,365m) .

    Having said that If youve got the time and $$

    season pass Poorisher for legth of season plus
    4 day anytime pass which i believe comes out soon for EPIC (whoops) excelent thredbo top to bottom or big windblown days

    OR if youre living there and not working season pass for both

    This will be my 3rd of 4 seasons with both passes! Last season 76 days in total! Why wouldn’t you, esp when you follow the @Donzah caravan theory!
    Perisher does snowmaking like a madman and when the Thredbo “fence” kicks in oh boy!! Then late spring back at P.
    Chuck in the epic benefits and this 56 year old HAS to do it.

    I ski the other place at least one day a season, sometimes scoot around on opening for a ski when FV is the only think going. Did a great poach with @Telemark Phat a couple of years ago there. I like it, but for reasons, Thredbo is home for me.

    I reckon I would like anywhere with skiing though.

    This system just gets uglier every time I look at it. IMO This is my last report on it. It's a vibe killer for those contemplating opening weekend.

    Looks like more moisture than previous runs. 540 line near Antarctica. LOL(exaggeration) But below Tassie. Freeze levels above most resorts IMO.

    Fri-Sat wet. Sun-Mon Ok, if there is any snow left. IMO of course. I'll probably drive down Sat.

    Reckon this might be the first opening in years I miss, though I may head up for some fresh on Tues/Wed if it comes off, even if its a bit of xc action off the top.

    This is Miss 3's first year of skiing, so opening weekend for me will be trying to introduce her to skis. Which makes me not too disappointed about there not being much cover. It is going to be a morning of snow play, getting use to boots, wearing skis, and getting lead around on the flat. It will be a good day for me to test my patience too I think.

    However once the cover improves, then she is on her own (well dumped in ski school).

    Early season is Poaching Season. Most seasons I get my best turns on runs which haven't opened yet.

    I'm devastated ! I have been watching snow cams with anticipation and now it appears grass skiing is all that will be happening ?! :cry::cry:

    I am learning very fast that this snow business is very $$$ and - trouble is you book and have no cancellation periods and limits etc. :(

    Opening weekend probably isn't a good time to invest a lot of money into going skiing. Sorry I don't have anything more helpful.

    Won’t be any runs open at Thredbo this coming weekend sadly according to the thredbo rep who replied to my partners query yesterday.Not surprising though looking the cams. Hope they are able to sort out some form of refund for you dammit. We’re still heading down but will probably do a day at the other place.

    thanks for the reply,, I hope so too. Learning lessons very fast. We booked Fri-Mon accom so will still be heading down and staying at Thredbo but I am setting my expectations re no snow.

    Go for a walk to Kosi lookout on Sunday, it wont disappoint. There will be plenty happening dont worry.

    My two both started at Thredboland aged 3. Loved it from Day 1 and never looked back.

    I have this heartbreaking photo of my 3 y/o daughter leaning into the gale-force wind/snow on Friday Flat, gamely waiting her turn to snowplow down the baby slope. It makes me cry every time I see it. When we picked her up that day she was so excited and couldn't wait to go back. Get them hot, sugary donuts and a jelly python from the hut at Friday Flat afterwards and they will always want to go back.

    This. There are some awesome bush walks from the village and great bird-watching (feathered variety) opportunities if the snow doesn't do its thing.

    Awesome. Miss 3 is already very keen.

    After seeing her brother go off everyday last year whilst she got dropped at daycare she has been itching to get into it.

    We have them both booked in for a seasonal program, but that doesn't start till 24 June.
