I didn't have to fit Mine, I use them all year round.
It's funny you say that, I have some Cooper AT3's. Had them for ~80,000km's. There's still plenty of tread left but they are no where near as grippy as they used to be.
Tyre pressures seem to be the same, does the compound just go off after a period of time?
Whilst there still may be plenty of tread left, after 80,000km the tread depth is not gunna be anywhere as deep (and grippy) as when they were new.

According to international practice, the maximum recommended usage life for a tyre is 6 years.
Winter/snow tyres have compounds for better grip in cold temperatures so you see virtually no high mileage 80K+ with true winter tyres.
