I'm flying into Osaka in early Jan 2018, and booked for some skiing in Hakuba. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience travelling by train up the West coast and into Hakuba via Itoigawa and the the Oito line. It looks like about a 6 hour trip.

Try and stop by Kanazawa along the way if you can.

You can go by bus too. The bus leaves Osaka around 11pm and arrives at Hakuba around 7 - 8am. You don't need to pay for a hotel because you can sleep in the bus in stead on the way to Hakuba;). But like Crispy-san wrote above, stopping by Kanazawa is nice too:)

Yeah, the plan is to see some of the smaller towns on the way.

Thanks, but I think I'm past sleeping on buses overnight. Even the flights from Aussie to nz overnight destroy me for the next day.

I've done the bus back from Hakuba to Osaka, but we took the scenic route from Matsumoto to Takayama, Shirakawa-go for a night, then Takayama to Osaka through Gifu & Shiga pref .

I've also driven the coast road from Kanazawa to Fukui in winter. (And back to Osaka through Shiga)
    Awesome drive that one.

The local road from Itoigawa to Toyama is pretty epic too. Lots of little viewing points and interesting facts about how the road has been built. Originally following the coast, then eventually into tunnels in spots, then eventually the complete tunnel of the expressway.
