    If you had 5 hours of sightseeing, would it be Otaru or Sapporo, and why?

    5 hours is so short is probably doesn't matter too much. Either will be fine. If I had a full day I'd rather spend it in Sapporo because there's loads of amazing cheap food, great shopping, the underground shopping malls are like nothing you will ever see in Australia, accom is cheap, skiing is close by (same as Otaru), the lookout over the city is cool. Otaru is OK but smaller, less shopping, less options, can be cold and wet. My memories are Otaru would be that it would be interesting on a clear day, if it is puking wet snow/sleet/rain I'd much rather have all the options that Sapporo has.

    Why only 5 hours? Both are fine for such a short amount of time, but there is a lot more to see and do in Sapporo.

    Nice seafood meal, relaxing onsen, couple of drinks. That's how I'd spend 5 hours before getting on a plane.

    We tried earlier this year to find a ski repair shop in Otaru but to no avail. Had much better luck at the bigger ski resorts close by (Kiroro, Teine or Kokusai). Maybe arrive at the resort a little early and ask for a quick wax?

    collections of mainly wood heritage buildings are very rare in japan due to the war;
    otaru has a unique collection on the canal of even rarer stone commercial buildings
