Member(s) of the Otway Ranges Ski Club gathered at Mt. Cowley today for a long awaited day of schussing amongst the majestic mountain ash, myrtle beach and giant tree ferns. Temperatures were dropping rapidly, the clouds were thickening and sleet was lashing the windscreen before we had even left the Great Ocean Road. Snow was first sighted a short distance from Lorne as we steadily climbed away from the coast toward Benwerren. Light snow had settled on the ground for the final 5kms to the highest point in the Otways. At Mt. Cowley snowballs and snowmen were quickly made by the first timers whilst the old hands pondered was it really worth the effort for a quick schuss and reminisced about the epic snowfalls in '87, '96, 2001 & 2015. The Ski Club Committee member(s) were unanimous 2 - 5 cm was not adequate for an official ski. With that a stroll in the sun amongst the snowy rain forest with its view to the sea was considered a fabulous second option. Member(s) regrouped at the front beach to shoot the curl before heading home. The Otways Ski Club - Staying Local !

Great report & pics but really ‘couldn’t ski on 2-5 cm’?

Now back when I was a lad....? :p

‘2-5 cm’ - was pure luxury! :)

Very good snowgum And try telling that to the young people today!
PS I think the early birds might have got a few cheeky runs in at the Falls Festival site that morning before the all too familiar Otways melt.

Local guy who lived next door to the festival site in the 90s pulled up in the servo in town with about 100mm on the tarp on the back of his ute.
