Looks like big changes coming for oversized luggage on Shinkansens, requiring additional fees and seat reservations. Will cause some people with ski/board bags to potentially reassess transport options. Even more reliance on takkyubin I feel...

Can kind of understand it. There are some peeved looking business folks each time there's a mob of 10 Aussies and their board bags blocking the aisle.

Aussie's ride the shink once a year. Salary man rides it every day.

Doesn't apply to most of the popular lines for the snow.

It's not so bad after all. I prefer taking the shinkansen instead of bus, more leg room and ability walk around whenever i like. And faster too. Using takkyubin also is abit troublesome, needing to plan extra days for trip, especially, if you're just gonna go skiing.

I paid $40 to Kuro Neko to take my ski bag from the middle of nowhere in Hokkaido to Narita.
Sure beats Fving around dragging you stuff through airports and hotels and railway stations

Good pick up! I had a feeling that the infamous ruler was going to be a staple on all Shinkansen trips.

The problem is not having it. It's the problem of the way it's transported. Those in the know of course look to put it behind back seats, turn seats around to create space, etc. It would be very rare that I would ever be blocking somebody with bags. But your average newbie punter unfortunately it not wise to these ways.

I've taken to having a strap or flexi cable on the top of my board bag. There are numerous ways you can find to secure it upright and out of the way on public transport.

I just imagined my 30kg super long skibag dangling like a punching bag off one of those springy hand hold things on a train :D
