There is plenty of overnight parking but not much of it is in a good position. All of them require a walk or a bus ride. If you're lucky your accomm will have a space or two available.

The village green area is small and fills up quickly. The best one is probably the one next to the Leisure Centre. It's relatively close to the village and if you don't want to walk there's a bus stop right next to it.

Beyond that, it's Friday Flat in the middle of nowhere.

    this not too bad...

".. In all there are four overnight car park serviced by the shuttle bus on Friday and Saturday nights. At other times, guests should make their way to the nearest regular bus stop located on Friday Drive. "

They do their best with the bus service (and generally do very well) but if the weather is bad it isn't much fun waiting around in the cold and wet.

Drive up to lodgings, unload gear and family. Drive to o/night carpark, get shuttle back to lodgings and/or walk. Repeat in reverse when leaving.

I've always thought it's fairly painless.

That's how we do it. It's a small pain for one person, but less pain than the skitube for everbody!

VSG, if you want to come to the SIC dinner, you need to let me know pretty quickly. Numbers have to be finalised (and paid) in the coming week. Podlette also needs to know about the wine night. lots of info in the SIC forum.

    First trip to Thredbo and
dDriving in from Melbourne via Wadonga & Khancoban; has anybody had any problems with road closures and what is the alternative if the road is closed. 2 Wheel Drive (chains frequently used in Hotham).

It would need a fair bit of snow to close the Alpine Way these days. It's tar the whole way and is regularly cleared. It's also quite low before the climb from Tom Groggin to Dead Horse Gap.

For whatever reason if you can't get through that road you'd have to head through Tumut and over the Snowy Mountains Hwy.

My folks always drive from SA via Khancoban start of August; they have only had to fit chains a couple of times in the last 10 years and have never not been able to get through.

If you can drive Hotham you can drive Khancoban to Thredbo [IMG]

Does Thredbo have a problem with you sleeping in your car in these carparks?

In light of the posts above could i please clarify something:

Are these carparks all overnight parking and any extra = fine??
I'll need to leave a car somewhere for 8 days and these carparks look like the only option

The overnight carparks are long term carparks, so leaving your car for 8 days is ok.

If you parked in the day parking near Friday flat then you'll have a problem as they chk that regularly as well as require it to be clear for snow clearing if need be.

I do the same as ChillieJillie each time I stay for a weekend or a week.

Space..traveling through the vast non emptiness
park proper..police patrol parking periodically - pretty painful paying.

Aint no pain if you are going to stay in Thredbo....consider it a pleasant walk amongst the hue of a ski resort in contemplation of what lies ahead. The bus back is fine.

After the July 8/9th dump in '05 (10cm+ in Jindy) had to get from Perisher to Hotham...Alpine Way was closed from Thredders, mountain of snow on the car at Bullocks Flat, many cars off the road b/w there and jindy. SNow past Cooma and almost right up to Tumut. DIdnt see greeness for a number of hours until TUmut basically. Insane. So yeah DHG can be unpassable.

Ok I need to clarify something.

Thredbo has 4 overnight car parks. Do these cost $$ to park in?

and if i was to pay this $$, could I sleep in the car, in the overnight car parks?

No cost to park but you do need a valid Nat park pass for the duration
