    Hi all,
We normally stay at E Jindy but this year we are stying in a Thredbo apartment with garage.
We dont intend to use the car between when we drive in, and drive back out at the end of the week.
Do we need to buy a (annual) pass for the car?
I thought we could buy a single day to get in, and then drive straight on out a wekk later.

You will need to buy an annual pass or for 7 days as you are in the PARK.

In theory yes. But if the car is garaged and unused, the resort bureaucrats will never see it.

So what they don't know won't hurt them. ;)

Or you could actually pay the park for the use you are making of it. You are paying to use the park, not the space the car occupies in it.

Wrong. Park is free if you walk or cycle in.

    Fee is for vehicles.

But you pay if you catch the Tube. I think it is a question of allocation of resources, not principle.

A lot of our National Parks work on an honesty box system, if everyone who visited was looking to game the system then there would be no funds for upkeep.

Tell the park entry you're driving straight thru to Khancoban, pay Nudda, park in garage, drive out at end of week. Carpark nazis only check car parks not garages.

^ this. Kind unimpressed that someone is asking for advice on how to game the system. Whilst we may think park entry is expensive it will need to be more expensive if some people do not pay their share of the costs of maintaining the park.

Why don't they leave the price the same year round then?

I know one of those "nazis" @Gimp Im guessing you may too? He is a lovely bloke. I had a hilarious chat with him last season, the form they leave (not a ticket) telling you to go buy a pass, is in triplicate! On paper!

I'm betting you two only pay the local subsidized $87.50 local yearly pass.

So why not pay full price? Or even day rate? Being subsidized due to address by others.

Now you're just being stupid. That's the price I am asked to pay and I don't try and avoid paying. I'm pretty sure by the park being non-rateable within our council area that we are subsidising it in other ways.

The whole thing is a subsidy..... of Perisher, by everyone else.
It's morphed since the initial IPART report but basically it was set up to pay for Perisher's dunny, water and roads systems.
it even included 'over-recovery' of costs at the start, which don't seem to have disappeared although I imagine that's where some of the more recent uses of the funds come from.

Council doesn't spend anything on the park.
They don't do any planning for it etc.
Roads within the Park are RMS or PArks (or resort)
In fact I'd say they can draw quite a bit off the tourism it brings in (rates uplift and DA fees)

Did you not read the comment you replied to? Properties in the park do not pay rates. Consequently all us rate payers in the area subsidise the properties in the park.

As to local discount for park pass, we buy one annually but actually go into the park with the car maybe 3 times a year. Would be cheaper to just pay the day rate but we choose to support the park.

mmm would be interesting to see a full costing on all of this. There are services the council provides that those with properties in the park use or rely on.

Basically all Councils are supported by the State as none make full cost recovery off rates and services (OK, maybe the CoS does).

I just can't see this at all.
Properties in the Park pay lease and bed fees to the State.

COS gets 50% of its income from rates. Before the amalgamations other councils got between 9% 20% of their income from rates..

In answer to the OP, as @Gimp says, yes you can, either buy a day pass, or nothing. They do not check private car parks. Some may debate the morality of this, which is fair enough.

I did, and dismissed it as uninformed. Hope supporting 'the park' (financially)gives you a warm fuzzy feeling. I was also under the impression entry fees from KNP finance NSWPWS statewide, but I am probably ill informed, others will know better.

mmm maybe I am uniformed. But I was always under the impression that there were services that the local council did for properties in the National Park.

I have always assumed the park entry fees were higher because some of that money went directly to KNP rather than into NSWPWS. Quite unethical if it does not.

As for the lease fees, properties at Thredbo pay them to KT, the head lease holder. So far as I know no community services are provided by them. And in fact the head lease holder still expects you to pay the lease even when they will not let you occupy the property. This happened post the landslide when their filthy workers used our lodge and left the toilets full of shit, literally, as they used them when there was no water to flush them.

I would think that any of the community assets in the shire are also available for use by residents of the park. Library, pools, tips are just some that spring to mind.

Rates are a tax and like all taxes there are some that pay more than others, for the provision of services, whether you use them or not.

Thredbo pay for their own roads, rubbish and sewer system, which are the big ticket cost items fore any town.

I guess the folks living at Thredbo might use Council's libraries and social services occasionally and drive on the odd council road.

I'm looking at getting an annual NP pass and it mentioned the ski tube parking but wasn't specific. I'm guessing they just mean at PB rather than Bullocks Flat.

Had my car 'ticketed' for no pass while parked in the car port under Squatters Run, even though it's a private car park - so unless you have a lock up garage, they will likely find you.

So if you drive to a unit and park in the garage for a week and don’t drive you need to pay for each day?
I haven’t stayed over night in Australia since a kid.

Yep. Same if you park in the overnight carpark at Thredbo for a week, you will be asked to pay for 7 x the daily rate.

Offer cash at the gate, come on man, you can do a better price for cash?

just to add to this people, who own places in Thredbo and pay the lease / bed tax don’t get a discounted park entry.

Personally I dont see the point in gaming the system, if you can afford to hire a place in Thredbo for a weeks skiing you can afford a parks pass.

Actually, if you can't afford a park pass, HTF can you afford to stay at Thredbo?
It usually costs thousands to stay there.
    7 days park entry = $203
annual pass = $190 - which you can then use to go to any other park any time for a whole year.
spend thousands for "exclusivity" of staying at Thredbo then balk at paying $190 for 1 year of access to all national parks.

had a similar conversation with someone on the pension last month.
They get car registration free with the pension. Recently they came into some money and paid nearly $30,000 cash for a brand new car. Then started complaining because it turns out the free rego is for 1 car only. Get a second car and they have to pay rego. Fork out $30k but bitch about a few hundred in rego. Then they discovered the "way around" it was to pay rego on the old car , that they had not traded in - a whole $80.........

Seriously sick of rich people bitching about spending money.
