A photo today would be pointless. White out in the car park, blowing a gale, drizzle.....well, you get the picture!

Another one yesterday according to PSR. What's it going to take for Perisher to do something about that track? How have you pulled up @SMSkier?

bizzare that last night the lift report said it would be closed today, but its open. it does close from time to time particularly during spells of hot weather ina lean season. which is what got me asking the question.

Trying to find something nice to say about today, and struggling. Best I can come up with is that I did not have to queue for a lift all day once I got to Mt P, but that was because there was only a handful of people foolish enough to be on the hill;)

I did observe that today was one of the "try out" days for ski patrol, where potential recruits are put through their paces. It did occur to me that if the newbies could manage to get through todays conditions, they should be able to get through anything;)

Looking slightly better than yesterday. Foggy up high, breezy, snow feels wet. The car park is filling fast, probably with the First Trackers getting in early.
Crowds should be " interesting" today! :)

Better conditions today. Taken from summit quad. Only 2 min wait to get on the lift. Ridge quad was busy this morning. About 15 min.

In the carpark by 7:15, 1/4 full. Perisher centre was a thriving metropolis by 8am. Firm and fast groomers to start, turning to spring like conditions by lunch. As we left at 12:30 they were turning cars back at the park entry. Crowds on the Mt P t bars not too bad, some cloud hanging around which made the visibility at the top interesting.

I usually go for a bit after 8. Grab a hot chocolate with the kids before discovery kids open.

Looks like I might need to adjust timings for next weekend.

Given that accomodation is already booked out... check the traffic photos on the Jindabyne FB page. By 7am the roads are blocked with cars.

Reports from anyone who did First Tracks this morning? Looked out window, couldn't see Accelerator at all due to cloud, winds were bending the snow gums over like yesterday so pulled the pin. Hoping it was the right decision??

At the moment, yes. Camping at Island Bend. Awesome views, nice wildlife (except fri/sat nights), phone reception, great prices, very short drive to either Perisher or Guthega, blah blah blah. What more do you need?

That wasn't a great moment at Interceptor mid-station. The person went into a snow bank and didn't come out until we pulled her out. A very fortunate outcome really. I'd already gone into a sink hole earlier in the day - a result of a lot of snow falling onto not much genuine base. I think that there could have been a little more roping off of areas such as the creek at the Interceptor mid-station. It was marked with poles on the southern side, but the girl had come in from the north straight into the bank covering the creek. This, of course, is just a hindsight comment.

We skied Perisher last sun, mon and Tues (first trip to Perisher for 25 years). Had a great time (a massive area to explore and a great range of terrain) but couldn't believe the mad and slow scramble to get to the resort only to find lifts don't really open until 9am. The mass of people waiting at the blue cow rope and then all charging down the slope at 9am was hilarious. Why not open the lifts earlier? In contrast we Skiied Hotham today and was able to park 30m from the slopes with the Heavenly Valley chair open at 7:30am! All very easy and civilised.

No it wouldn't. There are only so many people who want to be there for first lifts. There is a constant train of people arriving from about 8 - 11. Clearing people from FV and BC from 8 would make for a much better day.

But it won't happen as Perisher is now running on reduced labour capacity after they let a lot of people go a few weeks ago and asked remaining assigned workers to nominate for other jobs they were prepared to do across the resort. And labour capacity in key areas such as grooming is very limited. They struggle on even good weather days to get things fully moving by 9. Though the weekends generally run a lot smoother that they did a few years ago.

Yeah saw those photos, the last few weekends prior to the big dump leaving Jindy at 0730 had been fine, we were in the Perisher car park just after 8. We luckily have our accommodation for our remaining planned weekends booked at Discovery park, so I am hoping leaving there at 0730 will be fine as we are already past the turn off to the tube.

On that note, I see on the Jindy FB page people looking for accommodation at such a late stage in the season. I had all (bar our early opening and opening weekend accommodation) booked at least three months before the season started.

Did first tracks. Viz was a little low at the very top initially, but cleared up halfway through. Not windy at all.

The bizarre thing was they didn't groom the very bottom of excelerator. The top and middle, as well as outer limits were beautifully groomed. However, once you came over the crest parallel to the mogul course it was completely ungroomed and moguls. Never seen that before on first tracks:eek: Didn't really bother me as it was soft, but there were a few unhappy campers. More like chopped up leftovers from yesterday rather than "first tracks";)

Otherwise the day was not too bad, and actually not overcrowded too much on Mt P. A little busy 10-11:30, but manageable. From 11:30 on it was straight onto the lifts.

Well I had a great weekend. Sat was pretty crap weather but got a couple of fun hours on front valley.
Delayed start Sun with plans to stay till last lift. Crowds ran away about 2pm ish at Blue Cow. Snow was really good. Some ice patches in the morning but softened up. Lots of bumpy sections in the normal high traffic areas. Excelerator was really chopped up in the afternoon (my knees no like bumps) but got a couple of runs in before the legs said no more. Rode the ridge with a bloke that said it was bumpy all day (he made first lifts) cause it didn't get groomed. Confirms what rocketboy said in an earlier post.
Only negative was traffic crawl home. Left bullocks at 505pm made Jindy at 6pm. Bloody hell. But who cares, I had fun.

Why is the resort running on reduced labour capacity and letting people go? I would think the season passes greatly increased visitors numbers. The weekends are chock a block: I know weekends will not save the resort, but weekdays don't look too bad either this year? With the recent snow falls and more on a way, I would think reduced labour is not the way to go. Or am I missing something :)

Because everything was looking very very lean until the storm hit last week.

I was sharing a chair with a lifty 3 weeks ago, he said a lot of them were not getting any work as there wasn't many lifts up and running at the time. He mentioned it was being reported as one of the worst seasons to start. He said the time off skiing had been great but they were all rapidly running out of funds. I guess Perisher decided to cut a heap of them away.

So the best way to guarantee a good dump of snow is to send a bunch of workers home :D

Great looking day. Steady breeze, clear sky, perhaps a tad warm at +1 in the car park. Very little traffic coming up, pick your favorite spot in the car park.

Duncan showed me his car in the car park this morning. He lives outside of Jindy, and the roos have taken a liking to the road salt and grit on his car, turning it into a salt lick. The whole car is covered with kagaroo lick marks :)

The moon over a freshly groomed sun valley was pretty, but my camera phone pretty crappy at catching it:(

Beautiful bluebird day today, quite warm. Strangely around 1:30 lovely little snowflakes started falling from the sky for a few minutes, although there were only wispy little clouds around and it was sunny and warm:)
