Probably the same Geographic Names Board obsession with apostrophes. The links to the actual guidelines on the GNB website are dead, but IIRC they are stupidly detailed and pernickety. Except that they are absolutely firm on one thing - NO APOSTROPHES, even though Smiggins has nothing to do with possession. The variants are versions of a Gaelic word.

the correct name is Smiggen Holes
Never was or is an s on the end of Smiggen - with or without an aposthrope.
The name is actually Scottish and was the term used to describe the holes in the land created by hundreds of cattle when accessing rock salt left out for them by graziers.

Well that should move people are around a bit this season. A few less from Victoria. A few from Perisher trying out Falls and Hotham. Hopefully it takes the edge off the growing crowds at Perisher. I'll make at least 2 trips to Victoria if season is good.

All roads head to Perisher . I’d say more vics will head to Perisher to check it out than nsw folk heading further Sth . Particularly if it’s a marginal season in Victoria . Will be interesting to watch

If we are going to be super pedantic it should be The Smiggin Holes.

I know! That’s why I want a kind gentleman to come with me and do all that chain fitting stuff (such a helpless female am I ... not!). Regardless of my chain-fitting ability, I hate the things and will gladly sit in the car and supervise while someone else does this.

Though they do have chain fitters available much of the time. I guess 20 dollars these days. No ski tube to bypass road chaos - will be a logistical shock.

... Last time I went to Hotham we took the bus up from Harrietville. There was a snow storm all afternoon - At least 4 vehicles off the road - it took 6+ hours before we were dropped off on the side of the road across from Jack Frost.

interestingly that map has Mt Piper located on a peak 1.8km almost directly north of Smiggin Holes & 2km East-North-East of Mt Blue Cow, when pretty much every other map such as http://maps.six.nsw.gov.au/ marks Mt Piper as the peak immediately above Smiggin Holes at the top of the ski slopes.

Correct and no Smiggen. This is taken from my 1978 edition of Canberra Snowy Mountains Shell road map.

A copy of this old map (dated 19/11/09 - presumably 1909) is hanging on the wall of the chalet I’m staying at currently in Lake Crackenback. Note the reference to “The Perisher” (if you peer closely), Mt Townsend, and The Paralyser.

Did a little walk around parts of the resort today.....

Construction areas in place for Leichhardt works but easy enough to see (from outside the zones) if you walk up to the top from HV or Front Valley.

Towers 5 and 6 in position. Top bullwheel yet to be placed. Top lift hut for operators being constructed.

Top of chair is straight ahead to get off then left and right once dismounted. There is also a current track going straight ahead towards Mid Station that has been part of the construction zone. Will be interesting to see if it’s left as is.

I think a nice little run could be on offer under the new chair where the old T Bar track is. Unless the resort has other plans.

Snow making being installed from base of HV towards Leichhardt base (goes about half way). The works at the base have a long way to go. Drainage and a lot of concreting completed. You can walk there from the village. I did not see any signage indicating otherwise. Just keep out of identified construction areas.

Top station taken from out of the construction perimeter. Shows back of lift hut and dismount slope.

    Just a few random pics...

Base of lift from a distance.

And a few pics out and about...

Profit margin was not 50000% on investment so Perisher gave up on it.
