We're driving Melbourne to Bullocks Flat this weekend with an overnight in Corryong Saturday.

We were planning to go via the Alpine Way but...

Does anyone have Intel on how long it will take to clear and the best alternate route?

Going via Tumut adds an hour or so. Keep an eye on live traffic for updates.

Depends what part of Melbourne IMO.
Eastern and Sou eastern suburbs. Its almost line ball time wise to go via gippsland .
Especially if the weather is bad.

Yeah, we're St Kilda East (inner SE) and have easy access to the freeway/ tollway system to go north or east. Was thinking of coming home via the Barry Wa and staying in Gippsland for the night
    Two questions for you @Donzah
    1. Does the Alpine Way shut as often as the Hotham Rd? (Same /similar conditions)
    2. If we were to go via Gippsland would you take the Barry Way?
    Tanx.

Barry way is a full on road .I wouldn't recommend it . (Friends of mine live out that way, plus I have mates that use it to get to Lakes)

    1. Alpine way is nothing like the Hotham road. (except maybe the first bit) Its just windy and subject to a bit of snow , ice and black ice at times. Plus the obvious tree fall and land slips after rain.
    2. See above.

We go via Cann river, Bombala, Snowy river way to dalgety, Jindy.

Aha, cool. I've driven both the Barry and Alpine Ways about 10 years ago. Tanx, I'll look at the Cann River route.
I'm really looking forward to seeing the Western Faces on the way towards the Alpine Way.

Make sure you go to Scammell's Lookout, off the Alpine Way. There are also good views from Geehi Flats.

It is where you cross the Swampy Plains River. If you are travelling with kids (or are a kid like me) there are guaranteed kangaroos there as well.

Hi Brains trust, we're visiting Perisher for the first time next week, staying on snow with half board i.e. breakfast and dinner, however we'd like to check out at least two other dinner options.

We are staying reasonably close to the main centre, could anyone recommend places for dinner within walking distance? Cheers.

Can confirm - we stopped here as an emergency toilet stop for Mr 3.5, and he got to say an up close hello to a roo or two.

We drove to Perisher via the Alpine Way, staying in Corryong, and returned via Cann River, staying in Sale. This made for a nice sedate trip, significantly reducing the hassle. The drive home was last Friday, so involved some pretty wild weather, but on the whole it was a good drive.

What a day. Best of the season so far. Boy was it busy, just like a weekend in terms of crowds. Had a lesson, finally made it over to Guthega and it was superb, the groomed runs best I have experienced. Not so fun was a rather chopped up Basinski I had the feeling it was not groomed today, tough going. Need more experience to handle those conditions. We went over to Bluecow and went down Outer Limits the blue bit then to the Ridge Chair. Then laps of Zalis. The afternoon was mainly laps around the Quad down Goats Gully, Leichhardt also down to Pretty Valley and the slow chair ride back. 10/10 for enjoyment.

No re a day off but I did not take any pics today.

Interesting day...... as others have commented, the carpark was full well before 9:00 am. The roadside parking was consumed by then as well. As was Smiggin.

The 3 or so centimetres that fell last night did not make a massive difference to the churn from yesterday. Most folks I spoke to indicated that they took an additional day out to stay for the new snow! Good on them but to be honest, the groomers were the go and were skied off very quickly.

A couple of lifties I spoke to indicated that the resort was busier than the day before. That view was reflected in the long lift lines early on, albeit they were gone by lunch.

Post noon, the wind picked up and skiing with @robbo mcs out on Eyre, we noted that it was a “typical” Eyre afternoon with lots of wind blown snow constantly pushing across the fall line. Skiing was probably better late afternoon IMO.

I anticipate that the grooming crew will have a better crack at it tonight. All the inter-resort linkages were sorted last night after the snowfalls so perhaps the grooming will be pretty decent tomorrow.

Here's some pictures from today, Leichhardt chair early today off piste was a combination of wind blown and new snow filled in the gaps. Towers was nicely groomed and a snow gun at the top of Mt P they had to dig out/around. Another very good day, did seem busier, but managed to avoid the crowds.

Traffic heading north at Monaro Highway/Johnson Drive roundabout at 5.30 this afternoon suggests tomorrow will be quieter on the hill.

It was very busy this morning, but cleared out by around 11am. I had a conversation with a lady on a lift, who had gone to thredbo, only to find the car park was full, so went down to bullocks and tubed it to perisher. So Thredbo was obviously very busy as well.

Olympic was actually pretty nice this afternoon, when the wind picked up and started dropping in snow.

As others have mentioned, the resort has really filled in and flattened out. The ridgelines at the top of eyre seem to be getting bigger everyday with blow in

@Donzah I was meaning to get a picture for you, but forgot, as you mentioned it last year. The round manhole thingy at the top of the ridge chair is almost buried, and more covered than either 2017 and 2018. Oh, we also now half a half pipe, one side completely built, the other side absent. As someone commented this morning, that makes a quarter pipe:D

It was busy. Cars parked down to Prussian Creek chain bay. Never seen that before outside a weekend. Queues not bad though. Worst I saw was at Eyre fixed by a quick scoot to Inter. Mt P tripple opened about 15 mins early which was a bonus.

I found someone today who was turned back yesterday! That was going to be their first day of skiing for their trip, but he said himself it was poorly planned.

They were parked down to Piper's Creek, and then also in the Prussian Creek chain bay (there was a Perisher shuttle bus there that I passed as I left). Although that might be what you meant... it really didn't feel like there were that many people on the snow. As others have mentioned, cars were already parked on the street (carpark full) by 8:50. One does have to wonder how many cars are taken up by Charlotte Pass customers... not many, probably, but still.

I parked on the *street for the first time in the school holidays. At Smiggs.
    I'm going to rant.
Someone is going to be killed by the ****wit drivers who speed pass.
    It's a 40 zone.
I did throw out a "slow down you ****" at a Range Rover that thought 80 was acceptable.
It's so random. Cars haphazardly parked.

Definitely not me, I slow right down to ~25-30 when passing people, and 40 for the rest of the 40 zone. In fact there was a family running across the road in to Smiggins as I was leaving and going past there (they must have parked in that area across from Smiggins carpark), I slowed to 25kmph, although I wasn't very close but I like to slow down anyway if I see people on the road as you never know what they're going to do, especially kids. But yeah people are morons, many I don't think understand about driving to conditions. At 40 someone can be hurt, and at 80 as you say someone can be killed.

On a clear day view from road from jingellic to towong is hard to beat. Up the Murray valley with the range in the background. Towong is only a small detour and has a nice ridge with excellent views.

Possibly reflect on the psychology of this. I reckon most people shoot for 7am? Sooo if you were actually in your car and past the roundabout at 6.55, you are probably ahead of the game.

But it is definitely getting earlier.

I wonder if Perisher ran "first tracks" on both Sat and Sun, perhaps in a couple of locations, they would spread out the crowds a bit more? Would it stagger the crowds over the course of the day.

Hey there, as discussed earlier we're at Perisher next week, it's our first visit and I'm now furiously scoping trail maps and scouring forums for inside info and Goss. Can anyone help me with this image?
I assume Blue Cow is the peak to the left? What are the name groomed runs that are visible in the image? Thanks again.
