The school holidays are late this season.
However just for the record. Poppy rode with her friends mid week at smiggs in a similar season (2 years ago). Late September.
There were around ten people on the duplex
The cafe was giving away free food . They were that quiet.

We skied at the other place on September 25th that year and it was totally dead.

I've ridden a few October long weekends and there's been plenty of punters around

yes, it's the end of season party weekend, then everyone leaves town.

if they extend it's more for the locals to have some time skiing now that they aren't rushed off their feet.

Season pass holders won't bring in much extra money

I don't know about that. I'm skiing Thredbo this year but we spend enough on mountain despite already having season passes. Maybe that's just because we are not organised enough to pack lunches and bring a thermos with a cuppa.

I had to head back to Sydney for a few days, and it was actually good to do something different for a while. I managed to get a lot of bike riding in. I even managed to visit Perisher and Hotham on the bike;). At the site of the photo I can report the conditions were soft and spring like:D Back on the real stuff tomorrow:)

Wow! I haven't seen the area at the top of Link look so good. I imagine those powder ridges to the left would have been filling in all day. After battling lower Guthega on the Calf TBar for hours I was racking my brains for the perfect leeward run and Link TBar came to mind. It was way too hard to get there however!

Cracker of a day despite wind-hold. For my lesson we headed over to Smiggins. It was in top notch condition. What happened to Spring?

We were lapping all 3 t-bars. Did some of my best turns of the season. There was a minor hiccup in the middle as some how I lost the instructor half way up the t-bar:whistle: I blame the wind but I think it was my fault. Very embarrassing!

Afternoon V8 was very slow and busy so headed over to Wentworth T-Bar. Doing laps for the afternoon. Was very quiet as I looked back at the long line for the V8. Snow finished hard and firm in spots so edges were required. Couple on Blaxland T-bar down Goats then called it a day.

Yeah, I could never work out why when they said “winter is coming” in GoT it was meant to be a bad thing.

There is alot of anow up the top. Link was good skiing. All slow to open, but they did open everything at smiggs. Crowds appeared late morning so we did a bit of cross country skiing instead. Wind was pretty terrible all day.

There was some talk around this morning in the lift lines that the Pleasant Valley Quad has blown its gearbox and is out of action for a bit, I've noticed it's the only lift showing closed. Has anyone heard anything?

Last ski for the season for me today. Thanks to all the forum crew for your friendship and good vibes. Really enjoyed the coffee and chat in JAX. Special shout out to @harpo(Noel), @hillyb and outback guide @SMSkier for some sensational ski days. Would have to rate this year as one of the best in Aus for a long time. Seemed to time my trips with some epic snowfalls.
    See you all next year.

Long queues on the other lifts convinced me to just lap the J bars until early lunch at 11.30. For quite a while the wind was blowing up the J bar track. At one stage it was blowing me up the track faster than the lift was going and the line went slack.

Then there was the fun of standing looking downhill after unloading, waiting for gravity to overcome the wind.

I wouldn't have wanted to be a never-ever trying to have a lesson on the J bar today. The snow looked wind-buffed and shiny in between the piles of wind-blown. It wasn't as hard as it looked, it was possible to get the edge in, provided you were going fast enough to load the outside ski up. But trying to snowplough on the J bar runs would have been a real challenge.

For those people discussing the possibility of a season extension, I think it is highly unlikely. Last years extension was to October 7th, which is already the finish date for this years season. At that time of year the snow tends to be deteriorating rapidly, as does peoples enthusiasm to pay money to ski;) It is not the depth of the snow that is necessarily the problem, but the ability to build load and exit points, t-bar tracks and not have them disintegrate during the day.

Last year, the extension was announced on August 16th, which gave lots of time to organise staff etc and let people book. We are now in the second week of September.

I'm pulling the pin after 73 days on the snow and over 1600 lifts tomorrow. Sad, I love it here in the Aussie Alps. If I could catch up with all the great forum members tomorrow and share a chair or a T-bar I would be truly content. Thanks to Robbo, you are an inspirational cool dude and a seemingly endless source of info. Cheers to SMSkier also for willing me off the back of Mt P and other lifts into the back-resort areas; wow, how special is that country! Normo, great to see you all over the resort this year mate. I reckon you are a better skier for it. McTavish - we should have hammered more fresh together. Go the bag pipes mate.

I guessed as much because it is unusual to announce a lift as 'closed' the night before.

I presume the only way back from BC to Perisher is by SkiTube or can you ski it another way?

    Skitube or walk uphill. Sucks.

If it’s not fixable this season, wonder if that will herald an early closing of B.C. and Guthega.

You can always hike up to the top of Pleasant Valley Quad from BC. It's sort of an ok hike. I did it with my son on Saturday. Without a doubt it was the most punishing of hikes that day: at times zero vis (so you walk into snow drifts) and the wind was brutal. Usually, the pay off is a great run down Copperhead, all to yourself. But to be honest. The shit weather even made that just too sucky to enjoy.
But, just saying. There is another way of getting back if you want to avoid the tube. But you need to know where you are going, even in zero vis.

We were thinking about that when the quad closed suddenly on Sunday (but ended up getting/just missing the Tube instead). Did you hike along the Blue Cow home trail from the bottom of the carpet, or up underneath the chair?

We ski down to the bottom of the carpet then walk up the home trail. Pole markers help along that trail in poor weather.

There's no one there and 200cm+ base, how do they get more people down, must be challenging for the resorts to try and lure customers in outside of peak season......they should offer cheaper day passes or 2/3 day cheaper combo day passes in September. Surely it would be stopping a lot of people from making a spur of the moment trip when a day pass will set you back $160+ absolute F%^&ing rort if you ask me
