Keep an eye out for me, I'll be heading to Guthega shortly. Bright orange pants, sky blue parka, black helmet.

That is a large part of why spring skiing tends to be my favourite time to ski.

Yes, I remember you. One slight detail, my skis are Nordicas. But what a cracking day for a slide!

On the 4pm train now, I might sneak a little Front Valley run in before calling stumps.

You can hike up the interceptor to PV trail, it's not that long at all, maybe about a 10 minute hike tops.

Any news on Perisher extending to second week of NSW school hols? I'm talking Mon 7th Oct to Sun 13th. Getting a v strong feeling it will not happen this year, as in the past, the announcement was made a lot earlier than now.

I know it's late (hols are almost a full week later than usual this year) and the snow will be a 7-eleven coca cola slurpie, but it's the only time I can take the kids!

On a similar note - I'd also love to know if it would be worth going late in the first week of the holidays? Will it be busy on melting slush or still skiable and not too busy?

Trying to squeeze another snow trip in before the end of the season and this is the only time we'll be able to make it

This was Oct 4. Gives you an idea of coverage I hope mate, cheers.

The wind yesterday formed a lot of sastrugi in the exposed off piste areas today that was a little challenging. Early today I decided to go up Olympic with @Billy Jack . I don’t know what I was hoping to find, but it turned out to be more sastrugi, just even bigger:D. I took this photo a little down Olympic. It was one of the most bizarre formations of sastrugi type snow I’ve encountered. It doesn’t show well in the photo, but there are multiple pillars of snow projecting upwards, maybe 50-70cm high, each having a rectangular head, with fine wind grooves on the side. Very bizarre, but pretty, and certainly not something I’d want to ski through;)

Few more from the night skiing. What a blast! Great way to finish of the day. Even though most of the time it felt like skiing on uneven concrete.

I know - but rain and slush won't be fun with the kids. Wouldn't bother me if we had season passes but don't want to fork out $$ for lift passes if it's rubbish.
Unless I just leave the kids at home and go without them...

No need to book early. Just wait to see what happens between now and then. IN particular see what the weather is doing in your window and pick the eyes out of it. Preferably fine days with a cold overnight temps.

Talking to some of the mountain ops people on breaks or days off with whom I shared chairs with, a couple of rumours surfaced.

    1. They are hopeful of having the Pleasant Valley chair going again "in a couple of days". Apparently they overhauled the broken gearbox over summer.

    2. Given the last weekend's snowfall, the Guthega and BC closures may be pushed out to 22 Sep.

    These are only rumours though.

Also, expect to see more loading races like the current Leichhardt setup, with numbered lanes and "diamonds" at the merge points.

Today was truly special. So many people were heading off the mountain with ear-to-ear grins today, myself included.

I almost stayed for night skiing, but on checking the leaderboard I could see that it was mathematically impossible for me to poach 1st place for the day. :D

Even Front Valley was still skiing pretty well right up to just before 5. It was starting to harden in the shadows, but it was still possible to pick a line with some sugary cover when I called stumps at 4.50 after ticking over 6K for the day.

Gah, haven't been able to make it across to Guthega at all this season. I've been arriving too late in the day (annoying sleep issues, still any skiing time is better than no skiing time).

For those not sure when BC started to scale back last year. The photo was taken 24th September 2018.
The bistro stopped trading the day before and was emptied out. Such a shame as it was still skiing very nicely IIRC.
From memory they shut BC completely a few days later.

What a day. Had a lesson with another one tomorrow to tune up the technique. My turns to the left had developed a slight shudder on steeper terrain. We focused on getting the balance right and legs working and it disappeared.

Lots of various runs on Mt Perisher. My favourite run for the day was Hypertrail we did it 3 times it really got the turns going. Finished the lesson with runs down Sun Valley before heading back. Runs had softened by lunchtime.

Afternoon headed to Guthega it was not busy so down the runs and straight on to the lift. Tackled the Mother in Law for first time without an instructor, hate the entry point well it turned out to be not that bad. Some runs had softened and felt sticky in the afternoon sun, others were still in great condition. Finished the day back at the V8. Total effort: 7419 vertical metres. Biggest day for the season.

What a great day. I did every run at Guthega, except I suspect I started on The Screw and ended up on Mother In Law - confusing.
Left Guthega mid afternoon and thought I'd finish with a few runs at Smiggins. It was just a sticky mess, so i bailed quickly on that. Forecast is for moderate to high winds tomorrow. It was too good to last. Still, it's been a great way to end the season.

I did this today and will happily walk it again, quicker than the tube.
