Just started to rain with some thunder and lightning.
Resort shut down at the moment due to the storm fronts
Rest of the report from today.
The snowmaking areas groomed up reasonably well, and generally skiied ok, given the warm soft snow. V8, quad, leichardt loop, happy and towers. Away from the snowmaking areas the coverage is very thin. Vista down to olympic t-bar is down to strips of snow one skiier wide in places. Between towers and inter skiied nicely, but you had to be careful, as there are massive sections of exposed heath that can block your way.
How much rain we get this afternoon and evening will be crucial. If we get a lot of rain in short amount of time it will do a lot of damage If we can miss the bullseye of the storm and get out of jail, then the snowmaking areas should do ok, and should make it through to the expected snowfalls. Raining hard in Jindy now though
Heres a pic of a little creek and waterfall, taken from the quad chair, all the water is flowing out from under the snow. Flowing water everywhere you look ... and that is before the rain
That isn’t snow... it’s hail!
BOM AWS just had 5mm in a very short period of time. You can see water pooling on snowcams
CP closing today too. Wonder how long Perisher can hold out?
On a good note, perhaps the road will open early?
I’ve seen a few people posting hoping that the road might open early, what’s that about?
Not looking hopeful based on the cams. We might make it to the weekend if the snowfall eventuates.
Easier backcountry access to the main range should any snow survive.
Clear the snow ride !
Once the road is open you can drive up the road, park the car, and access some of the best back country directly. At the moment, with the road closed, the access points are much further away from the main range and the best snow, ie drive to guthega, ski out from the topof perisher, or get an lift ride to the top of thredbo
Thanks, makes sense.
Have been considering... but ...hills.
The road opening early means you can drive up to and park at Eyre t-bar. But given that Eyre is currently closed, I think it's a moot point.
Oh...and what @robbo mcs said as well.
Had a ride up Wentworth before finishing today. Got a shock at the top. Very little snow in the unload area. Had to be quick with the dismount to avoid disaster.
Is this rain or snow?
Happy to be a Canadian any day!!
@Pete Holden Rain.. its 7c... I think the end of season showers will be a novelty, Perisher appears to be in close down mode as well.
I'll bet there's a few of us thinking should I, shouldn't I, this weekend, if the snow fall arrives as predicted.
I dare say the next couple of days will help us decide.
Blue sky overhead , nil wind on the south west slopes ,temp 3.5c currently.
Looking west shows a cloud bank approaching but a few hours away I judge.
The sun is out and it feels much cooler now then it did yesterday.
Some temperatures finally in the minus, feels like forever ago...
Crossing fingers that they can hang in till the snow arriving.
Edit: Quick look at the snow cams I have a good feeling that they can.
Nothing a 2 foot storm can’t fix!
Looks like it's time to bring back the Bridge to Bridge.
Definite freeze up overnight puddles partly frozennover, snow feels crunchy. Saw this white stuff on grass, i preseume it is hail from yesterday rather than snow. very windy today, some chairzs will go on hold
I get the impression from Perisher that once a lift or area closes for the season (like Eyre for example, or Pretty Valley) it will not reopen, no matter how much snow falls.
Is that what others would expect?
It's going to be frustrating if a lot of snow falls and hardly anything is still open, but such is the timing of this season!
I don't recall in my lifetime something reopening once it has closed for the season
By the time they rebuild the track, put the T's back on and bring back staff they just told they dont need anymore, its straight up just not worth it for them
There was one year when they reopened Leichardt. But there was heaps of snow and much unrest over the closing as Mt P was still open and the only way back was by bus. Not sure of the year. Last 10 years
I think it will depend on the amount of snow. At this stage they have not taken the t’s off or removed the pads from the towers on Eyre or International. They were taking pads off sun valley today, so that is done. International didn’t run last week, when it could have done, so unlikely to see that. I think with Eyre it depends on the snow. If we see 20cm or so I think it unlikely. If we got 50cm then I think they would try and reopen it for sure.
There is zero chance of other terrain reopening, eg pretty valley, interceptor etc.
It will also depend on how many lifties they have let go this week. If it is just for a few days they can always staff it with full time mountain ops people, which does happen occasionally. Also, they could close one of the Mt P chairs, and just run one chair and the t-bar, same number of staff, more terrain
Once they shut an area the staff leave and that’s pretty much all she wrote for that area.
I imagine it’s just going to be front valley very soon.
People have been spoilt in late season over recent years it seems ,they forget what an average season looks like.
Observations from today. I didn’t get to go to Mt P as the chairs were on hold. The effect of the rain appears to have not been too dramatic. There was definitely snow loss overnight, but similar in degree to the previous few days, not an acceleration. If anything, the amount of water flowing was probably a little less today, presumably reflecting the cooler temps. The worst affected areas for snow loss overnight Seemed to be below the Quad / yabby flats, and also happy valley / leichardt loop at the point where the trails and terrain park merge next to the happy valley t-bar track, you can see that area on the cams.
When I left, a few bits of sago / graupel starting to fall, not rain.
Thanks All for the feedback.
Just to clarify that was advice from Perisher this morning.
Sad but it's a long way to go just for Front Valley.
Towers? Hmmmm...... Maybe.
Eyre? Tell him he's dreaming!
Flurries can be seen on Blue Cow live cam
That's based on current conditions...
Will they fire the guns in next 3 days?
Not sure if you’re serious or not
Why not? Seriously curious.
Snowmaking is to build base, to extend the natural season, reinforcement of high traffic areas. Season has 2 weeks left in it, not needed. Why spend $$ on something that will be laying on the ground unused soon.
Perisher generally cease snowmaking in August. They have a limited allocation (although one could argue they didn’t use any near as much capacity this year as in previous ones due to warm nights and a late start), and given the low numbers of visitors at this time of the year it simply wouldn’t be worth their while.
Is legit all the tickets sold out from Friday onwards? Hoping to hit up end of the wkd after this fresh snow thats coming, but already sold out. I thought everyone was going to be at the beach for end of September??
I've seen the guns run this late - 2015 MtP - albeit clear cold skies. But nothing would surprise me this year and Thur nite through Friday and into Saturday morning in a few keys spots and they should be able to cruise through to the LWE.
Obviously they probably won't, but don't be surprised if we see some snow whales appear on the cams.
The forecast of snow and Threadbare closing made sure tickets would sell out.
My money is on former epic pass holders from victoria border region finally getting their fix with some day tickets. If that's the case fire up those guns and make sure next week lasts the distance to October 5.
## Yes and of course all those families booked for Thredbo's last week but now slumming it in the Valley.
Or quite possibly less tickets available due to expected closed areas. ie lower capacity available.
And that too. It could be quite busy. 2012 was massively busy in the first week of School Hols. Hopefully they can reopen Eyre, Inter and even SunV - maybe pretty might even fire up - They have problems with Covid regs - so they have no choice but to get lifts running wherever they can in Perisher main resort this coming week. Otherwise they will have to bring back reservations which will be bad for 2021 epic sales.
Yep it could get ugly if they didn’t scale back available tickets.
IMO the old Norm of closing everything may be different this year.
What’s this about “Old Norm” ?
Getting flurrier in Blue Cow again. Former grassy spots now looking white.
