Getting the priorities right
What’s the accommodation like at The Man?
Not sure why I am asking, my days of staying on snow are going or gone, though normally pretty cheap at this stage of the season.
Decent sized room $320 a night including breakfast.
An honest 3.5 stars.
Food at the pub was good.
Yep just like I said, Eyre could re-open. I didn't make it over there today though, although I did do some runs down Mt P. @GlenH told you my info was good.
It was a lazy ass day for me today, that was for damn sure:
I had my best stack of the season, the first time and so far only time I clicked out of my Deacon 76 ski! Every other fall/stack this season skis have stayed on. Anyway, clocked up 30 ski days now.
Cold as hell and some great late season snow!
Early road report for Alpine Way.
Left home and saw this
Alpine Way from the west ....... if you are unsure dont go. Snow on the ground from Murray 1 ,slush on the road to Scammels ,beyond Scammels snow on the road to ........Geehi , Geehi to Tom Groggin road clear but snowing heavily so that may change. Tom Groggin to ridge above Leatherbarrel slush on road and snowing. Leatherbarrel to ......... Thredbo snow on the road - caution deep around Loading Ramp to Siberia. Theedbo to Bullocks slush on the road ,beyond Bullocks clear but light snow falling to Pender Lea.
Western side has heavy snow falling with little wind ,Thredbo and beyond is quite windy. Should be plenty of fun tomorrow.
$320 ain't bad for up the hill
Would DHG have enough cover to be skiable?
Depends how keen you are I guess. An easy 5cm on the road since last plowed , looks to be maybe 15 - 20 roadside. I didnt stop and it is night so my depths may be a little wrong + or - a little.
I could be there!
Yes , pity I could not have joined you guys , would have been there for both. But we must have been really naughty , they would not let us out!!
We did have that experience in around 10-13 inches in Canada for a week , you get spoilt
Tomorrow will be special , you enjoy
Keep the photos coming , we really appreciate your efforts
Look for the guy doing a sarcastic Vulcan salute. Possibly in mittens.
Sigh, annoyingly my partner broke her foot and ankle last week and is recovering from surgery so no day trips for me
Just go, its not like she can chase you
Very, but always is. We were at a low table at the front window skiers left or port side depending on the season
Agrees with Snow Stake...
Snow stake first light and if you see her say hi to Kate N at the Man for me
Hi Perisher crew
I'm inbound with the fam on Sunday. Had accom booked for school holidays since the beginning of the year, but with Charlotte Pass closed, looks like we'll be doing some tootling on the XC trails at Perisher Mon and Tues, if skiiable (even better if groomed...). Appreciate any views on whether the Perisher XC trails will be ok Mon and Tues. Appreciate no base prior to this so melt might be quick.
Carpark report - Savage wind from the westsouwest creating lots of windblown in the air ,I dont think it is actually snowing to be honest. Wind hold expected and will be the testing material today. Visibility poor ,maybe even worse than that. Temp - 3.9c but wind making it feel much colder.
Drive up wasnt so bad ,snow on the ground from Rangers Station ,chains from Wilsons but its a lot better than I thought it might be. Windblown reducing visibility in the usual gaps.
Roadside scenery suggests it is still August.
You had to be first, didn't you!
As @Kelpieboy says, very windy up here. If this keeps up some lifts will be on windhold. Potential for absolute chaos, lots of people turning up expecting powder heaven, lifts on hold, everyone jammed onto a couple of t-bars Hope they get some lifts going.
Encountered a hilux stuck trying to get up pipers gap between smiggs and perisher. They were snaking all over the road, 2 people trying to push it, 4wd obviously not working. They said they didn’t need help. Otherwise the road was not too bad.
Grooming has finished https://www.perisherxcountry.org/reports/grooming-report
I may have a look out Mt Wheatley way today will let you know. I expect you’d be able to pick your way around there or Porcupine rocks.
Did you expect anything else ?
My internal clock wakes me at 4.30am so naturally I drive up the hill early and get a nice parking spot.
Sun trying to break through and give us some visibility but this wind and resulting windblown ...... its going to be a difficult day. Kids are going to hate it.
Wind seems to have eased slihtly in tge last 30m, but still strong. They are loading chairs on the V8, which is a start. App shows only Mt P double chair on hold, but I find that a little hard to believe. We shall see shortly
Still plenty of parking spaces.....
and we have some icicles making a return visit .....
Inviting? It is not.
But, we will endure for the team.
Whats on the menu cooked or continental?
Just noticed, the breakfast menu at The Man is a blatant ripoff of the Qantas First lounge breakfast menu.
Almost item for item
Eggs Bene with smoked Salmon today
Would fly right over the heads of most of us lowly plebs
I got there the hard way, no pointy end for me. Just lots of flights. 120 in one year. That's how QF rewards me
Tell her I said hi!!
Food looks good.
If you'll pardon the pun.
Jen used to work for Qantas
Eyre (if it were open that is ) shouldn’t be crowded this morning - Sun Valley is closed and both Mt P chairs are showing as on hold.
Be interested to see how people make it over there, if @Kelpieboy hasn't put the closed sign out already
@Kelpieboy good report, reminds me if that other place
@Nightskywatcher get out there , it almost the best we have to offer !
You should have 10 million frequents , can I borrow some ? Lol
@Nidecker It seems that Snowstake fellow has been pretty honest this year.. hard to get a chat going, can be a bit icy
Hey @Aractus that was me who took that photo for you. I had just finished my last run for the season.
Triple off hold at Mt P and International T Bar is back, annoyed that I could not make it this weekend
Mt P Triple just opened, I hear they are working on Sun - should be epic!
No base, rocks, poor vis. - watch for snow snakes!
Word has gone out!! Get those lifts spinning.
Home rope tow and ow even Sun Valley being made ready. Crews working on both.
So much snow! Easy over half a stock depth out wide on Mt P. And, it’s skiing g really heavy. But there’s a lot of it.
Good effort on the resort to manage up to the changed conditions. It almost looks like mid Winter up high and out wide.
This is my first ever powder day.
Never thought I'd see boot deep on Front Valley.
Just starting to get the hang of it.
In mid cafe ATM warming up
Managed to snag the first chair up the triple with @SMSkier closely pursued by @Normo and @Kelpieboy . Plenty of snow has fallen. Amazingly filled in since last week Looks and feels like the mddle of winter. As Steve said, plenty of snow, but weirdly heavy in places for some reason. Hard to describe. The wind packed areas are actually skiing the best.
They have Eyre and Inter going, sun valley soon. However, tye crowds are absolutely epic. Taking a bit of a break, hoping e crowds may settle a little.
Saw plenty of forumites who managed to get here for the day out enjoying themselves, @Paperboy, @Lady Penelope , @Astro66 and many others
Famous last words, Ted! Eyre was quite crowded this morning, but full credit to Perisher for getting International and Sun Valley t bars going again, Snow pretty heavy for me (stacked unceremoniously near International just as @SMSkier - I think - sailed by. Took me a while to find my ski.
Nasty queue at the Mt P Triple. @Astro66 spent a lot of time today hanging around waiting for me as I struggled in the chopped up fresh
