Snow clearing crews would be undermanned. Roads not salted or gritted yet. Lots of snow on the road at margin temps (sliperiest snow is wet snow).
Roads salted and gritted in Australia.. I stll ask Why not Brine/Beet them like in BC Canada , 10 days no ice.. That's exactly what the Perisher Road needs, snow tires ---- the only way.

We don't grow sugar beet in Australia. We have sugar cane. In Europe and NA they have a plentiful supply of beet. Different temperature profile as well. The beet juice is salted by the way. Also, our roads are in a national park, which creates some issues. Our roads are salted, but grit is no longer used, I believe

As I reported yesterday, I can recall an occasion in the early 2000's when the monaro highway was completely closed from Canberra to Cooma. The Federal Highway was also closed around Collector. Took a couple of days to clear properly. So it does happen, just not often

Glad I delayed my drive down, which was scheduled for this afternoon and evening

You could import the product, out of the park fees we take.. Actually on checking we do grow it!!!

Just posting these here as a point of reference, so we can watch stuff go under! Done that a bit over the last 5 years. I do think at 60cm , Perisher could be embarrassed. (when they cant locate the stick tomorrow)?
Ok DAY 2 ,(Day 1 is above) The snow is approaching 30 in the gauge .. Looking good for 60-80 at this stage and maybe more by Sunday. I think its starting to file in nicely..

You would have been alright @robbo mcs ,you know what your doing. It's those others who don't who will cause problems for you which is why I like my "private" road up the hill :)
I am still coming up tomorrow night ,trip might not be as fun though , tonight would have been fun.:ski:

How wet snow slush affects driving

An icy road surface is not always the cause of the problems on alpine roads, deep wet snow slush can easily turn a driver into a passenger.

On a wet country road hydroplaning or aquaplaning is dangerous. However slush planing, that can occur when driving on wet soft snow on alpine roads, is even more dangerous. When slush planing occurs you cannot steer, or brake, the vehicle because the tyre loses contact with the road even at very low speed.

The combination of deep slushy melting snow, a layer of water on the road surface, and possibly ice can make driving extremely dangerous, even for the most experienced driver. Slush has a higher viscosity than water, therefore is pastier, and cannot flow through the tyre tread channels as easily as water.

Hmm, glad I’ve just had some nice new all-terrain tyres fitted to my Outback. Should be fun driving up the hill on Saturday morning if one believes the new BOM/hype prediction for that day

Dear me, be careful what you wish for! Love fresh snow but I'm not loving the prospect of the squadron of pelicans descending on the mountain and shitting up the roads.

Back to here and there
Glad I didn't do the mandatory one more run. Left just after Normo and little fun driving. Had to pull over near tbe Thredlbo turn off to clear the windscreen - the wipers couldn't keep up! Barry Way was blocked with cars spinnng off up the hill from the roundabout.
Drove through town ...very eerie. Came unstuck going uo Gippsland St and had to put chains on (4wd). Might be staying on for a while.
Hope everyone is careful and safe

Probably because most people don't have the experience in the conditions. Very hard to replicate in most of Australia.
However driving on highway tyres and not respecting the conditions is a recipe for disaster.
Yes indeed. Sheesh if they can't drive up to Perisher or Thredbo they would not have a hope on the Hotham road

Our roads are salted, but grit is no longer used, I believe
When I lived in Austria it was the other way around. No salt because it washes into the rivers. Also it cracks the pads on dogs paws. Lots of gritting with blue metal type stuff. Very sharp and angular for bite into the snow. They leave piles of it on the street corners and you go and collect it and grit your own driveway. Also always carry a bucket of it in the car during winter to get yourself out of a bind.

Yep, kind of frustrating. However, perspective is sometimes a good thing. I had to come back to the big smoke for a memorial service for a very friend. There will be plenty of storms and good skiing days in the future, but there will only ever be one such event for my friend :( It's a long season, I'm sure I'll find some fresh at some stage;)

Forget snow, as soon as it rains in QLD most people have no idea. Even the trains run late when it's wet (which isn't that bad as it means you still have a chance of making them). Even basic things like putting your headlights on.

Got to be up to at least 40cm by now!!! :woohoo::cheers:

What time on a Thursday do they measure Spencers Creek?

Snow started falling on Tuesday, the stake hasn't been cleared yet. They'll use a near fully covered stake as Snowmageddon 2021 promos, wait for it .

I would disagree The stake was cleared at 9.15am today.. Watch the snow cam time lapse... completely NUDE at 915am. It is cleared every day, Rain HAIL or heaps of POW
10 cm yesterday plus this... Thredbo claimed 40cm.. I think Perisher is ahead.

It cant be snowmaggedon... We have used that 2 times before
