Whilst usually ski PB, my last ski trip was ski in - ski out at Hotham in 2019. Just noticed that Hotham is opening tomorrow, 10th September for regional guests, presumably only Victorian regional skiers. Can't see why regional Queenslanders (Toowoomba) and NSW (Dubbo, Bathurst etc.) couldn't fly REX into Albury and hire car. Leave car at Harrietville and stay on the mountain. No reason it couldn't happen - just authorities panic over interstate travellers. All this fuss for 98 % of people who don't get COVID. Of those who do, 98% of them it is only a mild inconvenience.
For those who have comorbidities - they should be on Ivermectin
Most of regional NSW will still be in lockdown. Mid north /north coast and Riverina/Murrumbidgee come out of lockdown at midnight tomorrow. So that is me getting freedom. Not sure as yet if I can get to Hothom or not ,anyone got an idea on that? Wouldnt mind a few days at Hotham.

Another stunning sunset as the sun also sets on the season. We were meant to be arriving tomorrow for our re-scheduled trip sadly not to be but we'll be back next season hopefully ❄❄❄

Last October in Perisher there were lots of daffodils in full bloom around the edges of some of the lodges in south Perisher, and deer throughout the whole valley. So maybe the deers don't like the taste of daffs?

I think Vail will probably wish they'd never thought of the Epic Australia pass!

I don't think any resort is going to offer a season pass for the foreseeable future. IMHO.

Checked the Perisher website this evening to see if they had posted any updates on their status. Still not committing to a closure yet, although the reference to NSW regional lockdown ending on 10 September has now gone …..

Saw a post on one of the perisher Facebook groups tonight with an email from the director of sales at perisher saying they were committed to reopening if they are able to before the end of the season but possibly in a limited capacity. So sounds like there may still be some hope for those that could get there

I don't know how legitimate this is but here it is:

To:

Hi,
The news of the Snowy Monaro LGA lockdown extension means that our lifts will remain closed until the lockdown lifts. We know this news impacts most of our community in a significant way and would like to let you know that although the government has not announced a lockdown end date; if it lifts before the long weekend our intention is to attempt to reopen, even if only in a limited way.
We will continue to monitor the situation in NSW and will provide more updates as they come.
Thank you

Regards, Robert

I don't know why people would think they would not offer a session pass. The way they have done it this, I believe, has been done well with pass insurance included.

They got millions of dollars sitting in their bank account for months, even if they have to give that back at the end of the season in refunds, that money would have reduced borrowing costs for that period of time. I would say conservatively they have saved $500,000 in interest payments holding that money for the season.

Is anybody going out on downhill skis at the moment or are they all cross country?

My lifted resort rig is my bc rig, by design.

Most folks I’ve seen are using AT or tele or splits or snowshoes all with big skis.

Very little NNNBC or Nordic is seen, but there is a little judging by the tracks I’ve seen.

For those that care about such things, the road is now cleared, although the gate is locked. They have made the cut at Perisher gap. The road is cleared down the hill from there towards Betts creek. However, I didn’t go any further than the gap, so not sure how far the clearing goes. The cut at the gap is surprisingly deep, probably 1.5m +.

Big time meltage happening, and the snow is very brown and dirty. Hopefully a freshen up today.

I ran into @Normo in the car park. First person I have really spoken to for 3 weeks;)

A few Chookfooters about but mostly Alpine Skis (All Mountains) out there. Lotsa people with Snowshoes for the uphill part; perhaps 50/50 with skins. Conditions are very good for snowshoes atm.
Nice easy walk up to the top of Perisher Quad yesterday. Someone on the down yelled out "stick to the dirty snow, its much faster than the white". It proved to be very good advice! Vastly different skiing to a week earlier where it was sticky muck (even pushing on some downhill sections). Yesterday was sensational in comparison; even got up enough speed for a few turns!!!! (practice for when the lifts open soon).

Kicked off circa 12:30. Not many about. A solid 5 cms down low and more up high - wet snow and grauple but skied fine. Vis was the issue today. As an aside, snow stake did not reflect the variable depths.

@Jacko4650 Thanks for that. I've never tried skinning, not sure if I'd have the fitness for that.

Anyway by the time we get out of Sydney it may take a fair bit of walking just to find the snow.

Just had an interesting call with Vails IT team. At the end of the meeting, I posed the question, "if snow is not a problem, what's the chance of opening beyond the long weekend if LGAs arent in lockdown" and the answer was, "there is a definite appetite within the organisation to do something".

Went out for looks with @hillyb this morning. No higher than the slope above escapade due to visibility that at times, was zero. Occasionally it cleared for a few minutes and the skiing, for Spring, was fabulous. Noted several people about while completing several laps including some regular forumites … @Billy Jack @rocketboy @Goanna @SalleeGirl.

Some pics up to the top of 8.

Down Escapade. Skied great. Someone else (unknown) had the same idea.

On a day when there is fresh snow and you look up at the peaks, but can’t see them …. nothing wrong with some exercise at lower elevations. 5 laps :)

I suspect half these lines were left by forumites. Should be able to get a lot further out tomorrow.
