    Background

In recent years there have been more persons accessing the ski area and not using lifts.
Non-lift access/uphill access (“uphill access) such as uphill snowshoeing hiking or “skinning” may present high danger of personal injury to participants or others.

The ski area is not maintained for uphill access and trails are not patrolled outside normal ski area operating hours, therefore emergency services may not be available. Ski area
operations take place 24 hours, 7 days a week in winter and users may encounter vehicles,
slope and trail maintenance activities, snowmaking operations and other hazards not
    typically present during operating hours.

    Policy

    1. Uphill access is only permitted outside of public operating hours – From 5.00pm to
8.30am. All uphill users must be clear of the ski area by 8.00am

    2. Avoid areas where machinery is operating. Winch grooming operations may be in
progress. Strobe lights mean stay clear and avoid the area altogether. Runs that are
commonly and regularly winch groomed include: Towers, Zali’s, Excelerator, Lower
Roller Coaster, Cleft, Dogleg and Olympic however winch grooming may occur in any
    place in the resort

    3. Stay off all runs and areas signposted as closed. Stay off advanced (black diamond)
terrain. Stay off all Terrain Park features and jumps.

    4. Obey all signage.

    5. Stay towards the centre of the trail.

    6. Maximise your visibility – position yourself so that you are visible from above; wear
    reflective or brightly coloured clothing.

    7. Stay clear of all snowmaking equipment as it may commence operating at any time.

    8. Be vigilant for early morning ski/snowboard race training when crossing ski slopes.

    9. Please note that fat tyre biking and / or mountain biking is prohibited within the ski
area during the winter season, both during daytime and night time operations.

    10. Third party (i.e. non-Perisher) snowmobiles are prohibited within Perisher’s ski area
at all times, save for where the use has been authorised by Perisher’s Operations
    Director.

Persons engaged in uphill access of Perisher Ski Resort assume all risks
    associated with access.

    Safety Systems Manager

Finally, our nannies have turned their attention to regulating the extreme risks and dangers of walking.

At least they have been generous enough to suggest that you can go skinning or snowshoeing in the dark...

Not a word about single lift ticket sales, for BC access. Are they so blind in Australian resorts?

...or just don't want to add fuel to the fire?

If BawBaw can offer a SLT for summit access why can't large resorts like Perisher?

Wouldn't work too well in Perisher. You need 3 lifts to get to the top of Mt P, and a couple to get back (unless you can ski back along the road); and you can just skin out from Guthega without using a lift at all.

Interesting contrast with falls creek where the message is " thou shalt not be on the ski slopes after closing"

The Perisher policy seems to acknowledge that bc skiers can make sensible judgements to avoid grooming and snow making ops

Yes a funny mtn - I guess they've built lifts on everything skiable? Almost?

Mm, perhaps Thredders, Hotham and Falls are better examples of accessible back/side country where a lift(s) significantly improves a tour.

Have had to cross a winch grooming cable on Thredbo returning lateish (5:30) from the Ramsheads.
A bit scary thinking what could happen!

Have been in a winched groomer o'nite. They are winched for a reason. Lots of no traction and sliding/skiding going on.

Before I worked at Deer Valley staff had early morning skiing privileges on the lower mountain, until some idiot decided to jump a winch cable. Dude is lucky to not be cut in two and he ruined it for everyone.

It may have just been lying on the ground? It was a fair while ago - 12-15 years? Not sure I'd cross an obviously active cable (yikes!).

I recall we had little choice if we didn't want to head up hill for a km or so on our Chookies in fading light.

I just don't this eventuality had occurred to TSL. Fancy wanting to descend Crackenback once the lifts had closed?

    (Perish the thought!)

Oops sorry! Irresistible Dad joke Opp!!

Personally I think this is overkill. Should just say enjoy your national park, but be careful as its a commercial ski area.

The mountain staff control/communication during winching is right up there. There are snow makers scooting about along with other cats passing through. Along with the siren lights when a winched cat becomes operational. To have the public on a mountain at night is so precarious. All this whilst night skiing from Bunny Walk Station used to be a thing.

Yes but the policy looks like overreach.

To be fair unless lifts are closed theres not much point in skinning the resort.

To some extent these polices all ignore what happens in Europe where skinning uphill is a significant part of resort life to the extent there are groomed trails for uphill use only. Over 5000 competitors at events that involve skinning uphill can't be too wrong?

Going up Thredbo then through CP and over Paralyser to finish on Front Valley at Perisher would be a classic international SKiMo event.

They managed to organise the Kosciuszko Tour that used to run from Thredbo to Perisher via Charlottes. I did it 20 odd years ago. They started at the top of Thredbo, though. The best thing was that they ran shuttles between the bottom of the Toob and Thredbo which made it a great days cruisy skiing. It seems they start and finish at Perisher these days.

They say they start and finish at Perisher, and that it is about 18 km, which suggests a trip to Charlottes and back.

I have looked at too many trail maps to remember precisely, but I do know that at least one US resort (possibly in the Epic / Ikon family?) had at least 3 marked uphill tracks.

Let’s hope Falls Ck doesnot follow this lunacy and close the Pretty Valley road to touring skiers.
Crossing the downhill runs on this road can be exciting especially when towing a toboggan of gear.

This development is something Team Bears will be watching.
I don’t think anybody is stupid enough to ski uphill on the downhill runs?

I've been a bit anti Perisher in a couple of other threads. But I can envisage a basic risk assessment leading to a policy, but maybe the policy could take more of a partnership approach rather than a prohibition sentiment.

    true enough.
however we are talking the general public here , aka " the punters ".
yes I am one too. dammit . ;)
common sense is not equally shared around .
so the line in the sand approach needs to be applied .

Unfortunately perisher has already captured the many levels of dumb. Look at the lift queues, they are quite literally captured in huge numbers physically in the queues and financially with a season pass.
